1. load up a synth (a1 for example), choose a patch where the filter cutoff is tied to the modulation wheel (resonant bass or acline wmf)

2. cubase's step sequencer is hidden away in the midi effects section, so create a new midi track, assign it to the a1 and open up the mixer. load up the step designer midi effect.

3. you may not have encountered this little beauty before, but dont worry, its dead easy to use. the main edit grid works in a similar way to cubase's key editor. to star with, place notes on steps 1,5,9 and 13 at whatever pitch u like. play it back and you should hear a note on every beat.

4. to scroll up and down the grid, hold down the mouse button on the left of the grid where the note values are. this allows you to create sequences that span several octaves. notice that notes above or below the range of the window appear shaded out - handy!

5. now let's see what this thing can do. back in the project window, copy your kik+bass (for refrence) to 8 bars and set cubase to loop them. now head back to the step designer and click reset in the pattern section.

6. add some notes... when u play back, step designer will repeat your one-bar sequence over and over. pretty dull, but we can easily spice things up! click copy in the pattern section, change the pattern number to 2 and click paste. now we have duplicates of our first pattern.

7. experiment with the shift time buttons over on the left. these simply change the start point of the sequence, making it easy to improvise funky rythmic patterns. to automate pattern changes, just create a regular block in the arrange window on the midi track, double click it to enter the key edit page.

8. diffrent midi notes correspond to diffrent pattern values. when u play it back, you should see the pattern automatically change in step designer.

9. click the setup button in the bottom left handed corner of step designer. assign one of the controllers to modulation and click ok. now choose modulation from step designer's controller menu. by clicking the vertical bars below each note, you can alter the mod wheel value and thus a1 (in this case) filter cuttoff.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

hello surrender,
your stepddesigner 'tutorial' is still very mystical for me. i am with you until step 4. what do you mean by copy your kik and bass? maybe just describe in simple language what stepdesigner does.
or maybe even better: tell me if it is any good to spend time on finding out how stepdesigner works.
yes i am a newbee on cubase sx, anyhow thanks
