i owned a waldorf microQ and still own the An1x

all the synths you listed are amazing synths and can be had cheap.

the an1x is my favorite synth, maybe of all-time, at least if we are talking digital. this synth has been used EXTENSIVLEY in trance music, both highly commercial and underground stuff, but somehow never got the recognition like the viruses and nords of the world.

just as one example, you can hear it all over early yahel stuff.

the keyboard is better than the nord keyboard much better feel. if you are expecting a synth with lots of grit and those tb-like lowpass sweeps maybe look to the nord-lead, but if you want a workhouse synth that can do almost anything, has really useful and pleasing sounding filters and a unique synthesis architecture that no other manufacturer copied yet (the an technology, 2osc and the relation of sync/fm between them)....... give me another 2osc synth that can make a convincing epiano the only other an product they ever made was the an200, they basically decided to drop out of the VA race and leave it to the other companies. so, you also get a unique synthesis architecture with this product.

it has a clear arrangment of knobs and editing is really easy. also the editor is really nice and was lightyears ahead of its time, i still think it is one of the best editors made for any synth. maybe only all this TI stuff is jsut now catching up.

the Q has a unique and very nice sound, and is built like a tank. very good german philosophy behind this technology. i liked the q for its grungy appeal, the waldorf color is very unique compared with other manufacturers, and i know many people who swear by waldorf and once they got one of thier synths became waldorf groupies. if you went through many synths and didn't find the sound you are looking for, it could be that in the Q you will find your solution.

if you can somehow afford both the q and the an1x, i say go for that. the an1x should be a bit cheaper than the q (unless it is the microQ, then they should be about the same price). the nord is probably priced a tad above the an1x and q, but not by much.

i have never owned a nord lead and they have never intrested me. please please don't get the nord just because everyone else is making gated psy farts and twists with it. if you get a nord, do it for the right reasons

personally, the only nord product appealing to me is the nordmod and the g2.

i have also not owned a microwave, but the oscilator section for that synth is available to me via the scope dsp system. it is very nice and very rich, but there are software options that do this stuff nicely today. i can't speak for the build and keyboard and knobs, but i bet they are really good and german like the q, so you can't go totally wrong here.

if i could have just one, it would be the an1x, hands down. it is all over my next album.

from the list... Waldorf xt is the best i think.

i think its the most versatile of the ones you ask..

and for me its the ultimate budget ambient synth.          http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

I've had the An1x for some weeks, and i didn't like it at all.
Terrible to edit, very cheap buttons and not too great in diversity either.
I much prefer my Nord 2 over the an1x.
Waldorf Q is very nice as well.
And maybe you could check out the Alesis Micron / Ion.
Haven't tried the Alesis, but I've read some positive reviews regarding this synth.

I have a Virus TI. Can it do what the Nord or the AN1x can? I need a good reason to buy any of them... I just both a supernova...and I wasted my money cause it's much under the TI, so overlapping a lot. SO my question is again can't I really do well with the Virus what the Nord Lead and the AN1x can do? Is it really worth getting any of them?
(I must mention I also own an Evolver and a Tetra)

Thanks a lot guys! Greatly appreciated!

novation sound is similar to the virus sound.

the q, an1x and xt all have a dif color from the virus.

it all depends what you are expecting.

the k-station to me at times reminds me of a cheap virus imitation, similarities DO exist.

fun trivia fact when comparing the Q to a Virus:

both waldorf and access were subdivisions of a company called tsi. essentialy competing between the virus a and the waldorf q, but under the same mother-company.

If you already have a Virus TI, I think the Nord is great to have next to it.
Nord is great for harsh fm sounds.
But also any saw squelch or acid fart will sound much better on the Nord than the Virus.
