How are you doing? i hope well
Maybe some of u can help me with a not so little problem here.
It is difficult to explane.
I want to reduce my wave peaks (on specific tracks) with compression to increase the precieved loudness so that i do not use headroom.
WHAT ARE YOUR STANDARD LEVELS FOR VU on KICK&BASS COMPARED TO LEAD AND PERCUSSION etc??
- i know there is no STANDARDS, but just something to get me in the ballpark for psy.
My VU is set to 300ms integer; -12dbFS
OffTopic: "At the end of the day i want to send my 'tune' to mastering as perfect as i can without using monitors. <- I can not buy monitors for now because i,m moving to different country. <- with only my clothes."

OK.
i will ask like this.
My kick hit -5 on VU and -8db on master.(uncompressed)
My Bass hit -8 on VU and -8db on master. (uncompressed). together -3VU
-on my system they sound equally loud.
Do i compress the bass a bit and raise the volume. or leave it.
Some of my leads hardly move the needle -18 or so on VU but peak at -10db on master. is that allright?,, It sounds allright. Should i compress a bit?
My cymbals have no movement on VU but is audible enough for song, i think, and peak -14db on master.
Does that sound right?
I want to sort levels at mixing stage with individual tracks. Most mastering houses take only complete song in wave for mastering. i know of one that takes individual tracks and work with mix, but this is something i should be able to sort by myself.

like this page: http://nautilusproaudio.com/meter_madness.htm
read the "What average level do you recommend for tracking?" paragraph
if i had to boost my hihat to -6VU it will peak through the roof and get limited by the roof itself.
What do u recommend here?
i have a friend who boosts all his tracks through the roof so the peaks gets limited this way. I was stunned to hear that it actually sounded kinda good. but when you take the master down so the peaks don't go beyond 0, it was horrible.
I don't even think he realized that he was in fact actually compressing the peaks this way. but it was just natural for him to do it that way.

IMHO just keep peaks of KB around -6 to -8 db on master as they need to be rock solid , but again, there is no some general rule. And for other parts of your track you need to finde best mix as you can. Not all sound samples have same lvl so there cant be general formula for this. And offcorse ther is personal taste some people like louder percusion some like to put them litle in background. For final mixdown your whole mix need to be around -6 db befor you send it to mastering.

i use K-14 system for mine roof lol
http://www.wikirecording.org/K_System
some sounds dont make vu meter to move his needle so use ear to judge loduness of that sounds, frequency analyser is good for that like voxengo span if you dont belive ur ears lol...
also use digital meter and watch what happens, -14 dbvu is actuaaly like -6 db on digital meter(or something like that) but also not(the trick is in precieved loudness and that can only ur ear tell you).
so if it dont works on vu watch the digital |

i thinלk your mix is ok.
try to check if the leads can use abit more volume so they not "hide"
other then that pritty standart mix

thx all
I want to use meters because i dont trust my ears or hi-fi speakers.
Peakes slower than 300ms can use a lot of headroom and do not have an impact on the loudness.
i was thinking -compression for individual tracks
DO i use the VU meter? do i leave it for mastering?

with the kick at -8db you have enought space for everyhting ,your mix gonna sound flat and boring if it s too much compressed. the kick bass is the loudest ,the leads and everyhting imo you don t need to compress them for loudness purpose ,just if it make things sound better with smoothing or snapier ,gluing and all that.. and you can use other tool than compressor, like saturation plugins |
