Iīm thinking today about how I can produce with a full organization and with a "default" operation...I donīt have sure for the word...my english is baaad...I think about what the format to manage the files...with a single bit depth...in case...24bits...
But one track have a audio samples and VST Instruments...the samples are in 24bits...but and the VSTi?
I search on web but donīt find this answer...
I use Ableton to produce and searching the preferences I donīt find anything about that too...
If the plugin generate a digital audio signal...they have a format... a sample rate and a bit depth..a sample rate probably is the output sample rate of your system, but what is the bit depth? maybe the same of record option?
any here have this answer?
thanks one more time! |

the host-audioengine calculate the mixing with a fix number of bits. for instance 32bit. this is to have a big headroom to prevent clippings. to mix signals with different samplerates the host convert this to the main and works then with the converted.
to have best results leave your audiomaterial (samples and rendered track) long as possible in 24bit or 32bit. so you have a good headroom to master. only dither to 16bit when you want to create cd or mp3 from a finished track.

thanks for reply man!
but..
If the host, generate a 32bit sound, and my soundcard have a 24bit depth..the sound card convert 32 to 24?
This not make sense...is many conversions...this consume too much cpu, not?
My intention is mantain the same bit depth in all (Audio Material and VSTiīs)...if possible, 24bit in all..but if the VSTi run at 32bit..I will work with 32bit samples..
thanks for the help!

i think vst work at 32 bit float or more and same for all audio you process in your host .with cubase for example i set the projects to 32 bit float so evey sample are converted at 32 bit float and stay at 32 bit float, then i use dither and come back at 16 bit at the end of my mastering ,it s the last process,i dont know if all that make sense but its what i do (i don t know if sequencers have a internal dither to come back to 24 bit ? if you set the project at 24 bit ) |

yeah...
when producing..I donīt worry too much..because I will flatten the channel to make a audio channel and then mix and master...
But in a live act...I use a part of a track rendered in a 24bit Audio...and other part in midi clips, with VSTi and, sometimes, vst effects...
i think using the same bitdepth in all, I will reduce the cpu consume with audio processing...
txs!
