So many vst's...
Lately (last years) I have been using as less vst's as possible, because you don't need them all.
It's better to have one instrument you know than a million possibilities you don't know how to explore.
Also, quality isn't in the VST's or other tools you use, it's in how you use them.

i think that evry vst have his own style and groove, of course we have favourites ( sylenth1 is the best for my mind)
But it's good to explore new ways for make sound's, becouse changing the audio editing process, i think, it will be change the final sound evry time, and sometimes it's a good experiment to do!

of course, evry artist have their favourite vst or machine, or analog synthetizers!!!! but i like explore new interfaces, it's like the different brands, evry brand have his singularities, i guess... i can hear offten is a synth it was made with a sylenth1 or an albino, or with a real synth... but maybe is my impression heheheh

Yep, and that actually grinds my gears (yeah!).. but IMO it's because the sound designer didn't explore the VST much, and stayed with some preset instead of wandering around (synth1 and vanguard).. however with some vst's it's impossible to stray too far (delay lama).
Regarding the interface, to get expressiveness a good interface is a must, but with all these modular tools we can map parameters in a million different ways to our MIDI controller (I miss FL Studio's midi formulas in Ableton..).
However, for me it's a must to have all the parameters exposed so we can map them -> that's why I'm an Operator-aholic. Also, to have full control over the audio signal in specific situations I develop my own custom VST's for track-specific tasks - but most thing are easily accomplished with bundled DAW tools.
So, for me it's not the VST or other tools, but how you use them and how you can become expressive with them: more on the MIDI controllers than which VST I'm going to use to get that FM saw tone..

this.
regarding synths i mainly use zebra2 and fire up other synths only when the sound i want to create isn't possible (as easily) with zebra (for acid i take phoscyon, for analog lushness diva, ace for awesome kicknbass, ....). still i see these as exceptions and i'll have a reason for that. imho it's best to know one tool inside out, know its limitations and how to circumvent them using other tools.

use zebra.

learn zebra.
j/k of course, but it applies to any powerful synth you find intuitive and nice to work with. |

You must learn additive and substractive synthesis as a basic in order to get good quality, (loops and presets suck IMO).
The rest its about procesing that sound, EQ, Exciter, Distorition, Compression, etc..
Personally I make full Psy-Trance tracks with just:
-PsyKick 4, Sylenth 1, Omnisphere, Massive, Discovery PRO and some speech samples..

I stick to those: ACE, Albino,ES2, Ultrabeat, Sculpture, Hamburg Audio Nuklear, Operator, Octopus and Phoscyon. As for now the other softsynths can kiss my ass

well the art is with vst is that you try to make your own sounds and you know your gear ! i like that people can't gues what vst i used , i love zebra , sylenth 1 , discovery pro , alchemy ,albino ,massive and got a bunch more . and every vst you can create a unique sound with ! love putting grain delay's on fx or pads
if you know what the vst can do , thats it |

some i rarely see mentioned but that are really good are dcam synth squad.. learning can be a bit steep but after that it s some of the best va i used..
fm8 , waldorf largo , diva ,tal 101 , uno lx ,aalto ..also great
for psy if i have only one it s probably dcam , i love cypher.. don t need any processing or fx to sound great it sit just right imo.. but depend style.. phatter sounding synth like massive and diva would be more suited for minimal music imo |

I often have trouble to get the phoscyon sitting right in the mix. It often feels like it is not part of the tune. It is a really nice synth though.
