I can hear down to about 16Hz. And I can locate the source very accurately down to about 130Hz. |

Thats fine, at home my speakers roll off from about that. Its fine for Dance music in my opinion.
I just didn't really agree with what was being said by Jizy. |

yeah just use a sine generator in your DAW. I am sure you know this. You will hear lower with your speakers, you just might have to turn it up. They roll off quite gently, its not a brick wall kinda thing. In post production apparently they roll they High pass everything at 25Hz. I cant remember what slope they used. You can go higher than that with dance music though.

The kick isn't just about its fundamental. It may have harmonics and the initial click/attack will be much higher. It will cut into other sounds and in many cases will be above the lowest notes of the lead.
Fitting everything into a part of the spectrum is good, but it is not an absolute thing in my experience. There will still be overlaps in many cases.
-8dBfs sounds like a good place to set the kick level to me.

I went to heathmans' PMC mastering suite for the cut of my early vinyl in 2003 (I think). There was low stuff coming out, but not stuff I could hear, stuff I could feel mostly. Basicaly I cant really tell the "cut-off" frequency where I stop hearing and start feeling the really low stuff.
And I have swept the sine generator on a big P.A. when flashing the rig in the venue I used to work in the UK (Junction in Cambridge) and some speakers simply start rattling (along with some of the room's structures, metalic ones..etc) in the really low end, so again I could not tell if I could actually hear the sub below 20Hz or just the whole fucken venue vibrating.
