Hi all.
Had a situation little while ago, I had a track running with lots of automations on the track volume faders (in the mixer), at some point I wanted to lower the volume for few of them but as they were automated, the only way to lower the volume was to re-record/draw the automation. That brought a question to my head - should I insert some kind of plugin with volume control at the end of the chain (of each track) and then automate the plguins volume so I can control the track volume fader, or is it not advisible ?
BTW - I use Logic 8 (though the question applies to all DAWs I think)

I don't believe it'll be so bad to add a plugin.
As for Logic, you could add the Gainer.
I use it alot.

In Cubase/Nuendo it is possible to control the input gain.

It's possible in Logic too but then you change the whole signal flow (compressors / eq etc. will have less signal to work on)
The ableton solution seems like the right one for me, does anyone know if it can be done within Logic ?

as far as I know, no
but its not such a big deal to insert a gain as last plug...and if you really want to lower a fader, send the channel to a bus and lower the volume there

well when i do that i just lower the volume of the last plugin in the chain since every effect has an output level to control. you could also sellect all the automation points in the automation track and lower them all then but this is in cubase.

I don't worry about volume automation until the mixdown. At that point everything is audio and I can just turn the clips up or down if I need to adjust the volume. Leaving the Mix fader specifically for volume automation.

Thanks guys - nice ideas
I think MadScientist's idea was the one that suits Logic the most - output the track to a bus/aux and lower the volume there, keeping the automation on the original track
btw, Makus - the Jingle Bells track is great! YEEEEES! |

i also think better than open a VSt is to send to group track and than lower the level.

I like to see all my volume automation in one place. If I need to adjust how the level of something changes, I don't want to lose my flow whilst I go hunting for it in the automation of some random plugin, I want to go straight to it and fix what's wrong. The obvious place to look for it is in the fader automation, and that's where I keep it.
In SX, the alternative automation modes (especially Trim) and the 'select all events' command are very useful for this, especially if they're on key commands. If you don't know about them (especially Trim mode) it's a good idea to look them up.

But Colin,
The case here is automating the fader whilst changing the gain feeding the channel, not automating a random plugin gain...
It really doesn't matter what the fader is doing, when basicly it's still moving on the same dB scale.
Thus, I wouldn't be touching automation events at all...

Almost all vsts have a master volume right? just automate that and dont worry about the fader
I work like this most of the time because in the end most of the time i have to select all faders and bring down some to make sure i dont have clips

Ah I see. But still I dunno... the connection between the position of a fader and the level of the sound coming out of it is an important one to me, but everyone works differently I suppose
