i heard BAD things about it...but sometimes i fill it's necessary. for example i have a track that when the lead comes in i feel that -4db (at its channel) is good for it, but a bit later when things get a bit more complicated i fill that it should be louder, up to 0db at the its channel. but i fill it's kind of wrong to work like that.
what is the solution?

Yes indeed!
This is the way to go...
If you have the headroom, and you should have...

What bad things have you heard?

1. that it's ruining the mix
2. just a friend that has more experience than me come to help me with the production and said "don't do automation on the volume, it's making a mess"
3. in the mixing guide that somebody uploaded here about a month ago, it was written that in electroni music it's mostly not needed to change the volume of instrument (that what most make me to think that maybe i realy do something wrong)

in a mixing guide posted here a month or so ago. it was said that it is good practice to do volume automate and that many producers do it. he called it 'riding the faders'.
I not sure if it is good in your situation.

this exactly what is written in the guide:

3.1.3 Level Riding
One last thing to consider when leveling is the concept of \level riding." If you
ride your levels, then what that means is that, rather than having your level
faders always stay at a ¯xed position, they move up and down over the course of
the track to shape the dynamics and the balance of the music. In my experience,
level riding is very useful and important for music with a wide dynamic range. It
is usually unnecessary with less dynamic music, such as electronic dance music.

okej! i see
But this is a case to case thing...
its your choice which sounds to be where in the mix...
if something you want to be heard gets masked you make a decision on what is important for that section..

if you find volume automation to solve it in a natural way then thats the way to go

Compress first, then mix, then automate at the end. This way you dont have to do things several times over... even tough it can be hard to maintain this working order...           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

You can achieve similar results with automation of volume as you would with compression. There is no rule that says you have to compress first. Indeed if your using a digital compressor which doesn't use some kind of saturation effect and you want to keep the integrity of the sound then automation is your friend.

There are no right or wrong ways.

To let a nice hihat (or even lead) kick in by raising the volume level on the respective channel fader up to the desired spl is truly a pleasure in my ears...

Hi Guys,

I'm new here, just browsing around, but can throw in my 2c here.

I like using volume automation(alot) but it is a pain cause my volume levels change around alot during the creative process.....soooooo....what I do is put a fruity balance on the mixer channel. then automate ITS volume level.

That way u can do your automation, and no matter how much u mess with the actual volume levels later on it will still have the exact same effect
