I don't blame him for having those preconceptions, I mean it seems like you guys all have yours about him. It's a vicious circle that someone needs to take the initiative to end...
And more on topic...I heard about someone developing these type of speakers in the past, they were more saying it was a way to control sound into one area so that it wouldn't bother people outside that area...Can't remember where I read about it, but it definitely grabbed my attention at the time.

What what?
There is nothing wrong with this article (besides the usual objections of lack of info and details). This technology has been arround for a few years. From what I remember reading about it, it works by sending extremely high amplitude ultrasonic waves from two points focused on one point to create interference. One ultrasonic beam amplitude modulates the other ultrasonic beam to the point that the non-linearity of the air itself causes frequencies in the audible range. But this is all from memory so I probably have some of the details wrong.

exactly...
i've heard also about mobile phones using this technology - they consist of 2 parts with several speakers an each one, and every group of speakers produces ~140 dB (!!!) of ultrasonic sound, one is modulated by the second so you can hear usual voice while looking at the screen of the phone, and only you will hear the sound..
by the way, i can't beleive that 140 dB of ultrasonic is absolutely secure for your ears.

Not sure about ultrasonic but 140dB is pretty loud. Airplane loud if i'm not mistaken.

sadly I don't have preconceptions about anything. I was a real believer in science, authority, reason, logic etc. Now i know what are theories... things nobody can prove but some believe it should work because "authority" says so or it sounds logical or it makes you look cool and smart. Once you test theory it's true or false. That is to say that theory is theory for as long as we don't know does it works or not.
