This song leaves me speechless when it comes to vocal effect-processing and the eye for little details!
So what kind of effects do you think has been applied here? |

Hey guys, don't you know that it is considered extremely uncool to say something positive about infected mushroom or even say they are good?
Seriously, a lot of people around started to "dismiss" IM generally, dismiss their new album without even listening to it etc. etc. "its not psy anymore" bla you know that sorts of narrow minded comments.
I think you are right, in my opinion they deliver top notch production and music. I think they really deserve their success big time.
Its a difference to make good music that sells than to make music to sell it. From my point of view they just do good music, which, lucky for them, also sells well.
Anyways. "I wish" is a great song in every aspect possible. I find it a bit a shame how skazi remixed it.
I'm very confident that they used "native Instruments" "vocator" for it.
Basically this is possible with many vocoders or also pitchshifters which allow to be controlled from a midikeyboard, but as with all of infecteds doings its their enormous experience in tweaking which get it to sound like them.
I used the voice processor in cubase to do some vocal stuff in this song:
http://www.subconsciousmind.ch/media/releases/intermezzo/SubConsciousMind-Intermezzo-128/02-(Intermezzo)-SubConsciousMind(SCM)-MyMusic.mp3
They start at 2.31 Minutes and evolve till 3.20.
The principle is simple, you take your vocals and it doesn't matter a lot in which melody you actually sing. Then you apply voice processor to it or vokator or similar. Then you are able to "play" your voice with a midi keyboard. The melody you play on the keyboard will be the melody of your voice.
This is what I did in the above example, just that I didn't sing any words, but rather intended to create something "ununderstandable" "trippy" yet melodic.
Personally I don't think that infected uses a lot of special tricks or gear to make what they do. They are just god dam good.
Best example is the kickdrum tutorial, whereas the whole world till today (see recent posts in the forum) still is looking for the magic method for making a kick, they long ago showed us, that it all comes down to LISTENING.
I started making music in 1997/98 and in 2000 I met Infected mushroom at a party here in switzerland. I was tuning the speakers there and had the chance to talk to duvdev. I asked him how to get such a clear bass as they have and he answered: "learn to listen". I asked him if he wasn't using a special synth or so. He said: "no, every time a different machine". Then I asked him if there wasn't one which is especially good. He said "Juno 106 is not bad".. I told this to a couple of friends, some of them ended up in buying a Juno 106 but never ended up in getting nices basses from it.
What I want to say, that it all comes down to listening. And it was the best tip he could actually give me and anyone.
I'm still not that good of a listener when it comes to production, since the emotions are far more important to me, but I try my best

The old "Psycho" sample is from the movie Batman n Robin said by Uma Thurman / Poison Ivy at the lab destruction scene. |

IMO, once you've learned what the controls on your software does, the whole of music production can be reduced to 'learn to listen'. I also use a different machine for bass each time (ok, Trilogy gets used more than some others ); I'm not saying I'm as good an engineer as some but the two things that will make your music sound good are the quality of the tools you use and the quality of your analytical listening skills. You can download the latest plugins but listening has to be learned from the inside - I don't think it's really possible to teach it, it has to be gained from experience.
