-creativity
-technology
-electrical current (or alternative light sources and moving parts)

-whatever extra's you can think of that give an effect that might be desirable

many different techniques are applied, the projections the doors had consisted out of a series of overhead projectors with transparent disks on them holding different color oils in layers, combined with patterns printed on transparents etc, all moving (for example by using engines of broken turntable), this requires a LOT of human interaction.

you can also use computer rendered images (not very original) , like the winamp plugins and such, creating lines/dots/patterns/... These are beatsynced if you hook up the computer to the mixing table... considered not very proffesional.

then there's video projections ... get a few video sources (movies, dvd, video, camera) and a video mixing table, some of the footage can be loops that can be beatsynced for nice effects. mix some video channels together and send them to a projector.... very intense job, proffesional!

Personally I beatmatch my music with my projections and try to symbolize every frequency with a visual symbol. At least this is my aim and i'm getting closer. So my main idea of the visuals is that it has to follow the music,to be perfectly synchronized , use a soft on a laptop, and plug the laptop to a digital video projector, it means a lot of work but at least it is live!!
I also design my still pictures with graphx sofwares, and edit my own videos under 3d programs and shoots i did on my dv camera.

You can check out a lot of examples of visuals softawares on the web. Use a good search engine and you'll find your happiness.

well as "Rik" said, there is a lot of way of making a beautiful and strong visual sense.
There is way, I call it the " craft method " "rik" described it in the 1st paragraph.
This method asks for many hand and work on materials.

There is method used by most part of the VJ "video Mixing" which consists in mixing video sources multiple (DVD, VHS, CAMERA) on a video mixing desk. This method is very interesting, but not very original (by using existing video). I find the methode less power full because you do not control the speed and the frequency of video

After this you got this innovative method " computing video mixing ". This method asks for a computer equipment and thus dearer(more expensive). So you need to record your video in the data processing in order to connect the "lap top" on the video mixing desk. With special software, you can give to the videos many effects and control their frequencies, what gives life to the visual sense.

The last method is on the same principle as the previous one but more complex.
"Live Visuals". This method asks for a big computer and graphic knowledge.
You create your home animations from Zero with graphic software 2D and 3D. You use the "lap top" with software of real-time video control. You control the effects, the frequency ,the choice of animations on beat !! nearly at the second!!

Personally I use as "Kaa" the last option!
I create my animations with software 2D and 3D. I synchronize them all and on regular and uniform buckles and way of being able to change them in rhythm!! I use 2 "Lap top" connected to a video mixing desk, what gives me a bigger possibility of mixing! I control the Speed of the play for each conputer with a pitch control in order to be "On Beat !" and change animations on real-time
"Live Visuals" !

Hope that Explanation will help you
