hi people,
lately i have been stung by the visual worm, but i have no clue where to start, so i would love to get some advice on that, what programs to use in order to create visuals, like fraktals and so on, and what program to use in order to vj them etc, what do i need in order to sync them to a track played by a dj or live act at a party etc, etc, any piece of info is super welcome since i am a total newbie to this....
thanks in advance for the good advice that hopefully will be given.....

I been VJing for quite a while
You need:
1. Resolume
2. Download some free VJ video mixing packs to start you off
3. A midi controller (**GREAT** fun for mixing videos)
4. Some capture software to grab great bits out of movies (running clips in ping-pong loop mode is hilarious - especially people running/jumping/actions!)

visuals + sound. at the same time. by one hand. this is the future. .....
i use resolume too. but you need a higher version for synchronising it better with the sound. the earlier versions cannot.

Visuals are a really undervalued art, they're just as important as the music.

And what about programing visualisations ? In which language is it done (ie the easiest to start with) ? What's the concept ? How do you convert audio input to something visual ?
Btw, here's what I judge to be the best visualiser out there :
(The video quality is too low to really enjoy it, you don't see all the small lights pulsating with each piano notes).

my guess will be that the vizualisation in the video is made in Affter Effects with a plugin called Particular ... After effects has an option that you can sync up your particles to the music (Music peeaks, in this case the piano)
hear you have a fantastic tutorial how to sync up jour particles with music in After effects

I forget whether Resolume is free or not, but if you're willing to do some research you can set up a pretty nice video mixer in Pure Data for free.
You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

well, they are underestimated only at the smaller parties. because the smaller parties dont have the budget for that and btw they dont have the cultural needs for that. most guests just come and want to dance, they are not interested in visuals.
and you know, a vj has to be there from the beginning to the end, many hours long, while the djs change every two hours and are the star attraction of the event, so the difference in the salaries is also quite big.... and not in accordance to the length of the work done.
i cant speak for the development of the scene in the last year, and actually isratrance is the only and main thing that brought me back to the wider trance scene right now, but i can actually speak for the development of the visual work in the last 10 years and more.
mainly you have 4 types of visual communication at parties - you have fractals, caleidoscopic colours , 3d self designed images and conceptual visuals.
1.fractals were very popular in the past at the parties. we had various programs of creating them, and the ppl who dealt with them were mostly mathematicians. but very sooon ( well whats soon anyway, i mean after 3-4 years) most ppl at the parties and festivals were really fed up with the fractals. it is one and the same. well i am sure in scenes where the visual work has not even emerged yet , and i know such countries!, there the people will find even fractals interesting. or the younger. but i dont belong to the younger.
2. then we had the caleidoscopes and all similar colourful images that you still see at the parties. hallucinogenic and trippy indeed, but i am bored with them nowadays. seen so many of them. but anyway, you do them with resolume or other software for vjs.
3. then you have the more interesting type of the self made 3 d images. very few ppl do this at parties. and it is quite difficutl to do. me, in a 6-7 hours set i only use ver few such images done by me, the rest i am mixing. you know, it is not so easy to make even one minute of 3d , it all needs memory, it needs ram, it needs time.....and skills.....and btw it needs a good salary.....which is not provided in trance.....djs get much more money for nothing.....
4. and then you have the conceptualised party. this is what i am doing nowadays. i am bored with the colours and fractals and whatever. well i am not really bored with fractals but i find a real nice concept 100 times more interesting. like we just take a theme and i prepare a mix on the theme. i enjoy it quite a lot! it is what keeps me going right now cause all other inspiration about the parties is gone.
like here for instance we have our next conceptual event: http://www.timewavezero-productions.com/tv/index.php?id=99 i like to do such things. really. all the rest, all the party stuff, it is too unserious for me.....nowadays....

soooo i have a Dell Inspiron and there's no HD out for video. There's only a VGA out. Will my visuals look crappy if I use a projection screen?
And
Should I run the music and the video off the same system? Or how do I go about doing that? Cuz I know my system is pretty taxed just processing the audio alone.
Thanks.

I VJ 3D animation, EVERYTHING I create myself, and yes it takes time.
I take VJing quite seriously (although it's a hobby) and because I create everything I think it's more like a live visual production set, something that should be compared to an audio producers live set, rather than a DJ.

obelizk you run it at the same system or you connect the systems, you need resolume 4 for the real time synchronisation of beats and everything....or there are probably better software but this is the simple standard and you need the higher version, it can do quite more than the previous.
vga is okey. dont get why should it be a problem.if the system is " taxed " only by audio, then it will be almost impossible.
i have also a very week laptop right now , i am nerved to the maximum with this slow ass. had some more laptops for this purpose earlier, now i live alone and have only one slow grandpa. very unpleasant. you cant do absolutely anything then.
