Just wondered whos going to jump in and get Vista when its released? As far as music making goes, will Cubase SX 3 work with it and what about other programs? (64bit version that is)

Not a chance...it will use so many of your computers resources just to run there would be no power left for your music software

seriously though vista is a load of crap!!

Exactly. Less is more power to you.

Get yourself a stripped down copy of XP (TinyXP), all unnecessary services turned off and a minimal of installed programs. Keep your DAW off the internet and forget anti virus.

Vista easts RAM and graphics power and has all kinds of things running in the background, like Microsoft's own version of Google Desktop/Spotlight which catalogues your own computer constantly.

Who knows what you can and can't turn off. Stick with the tried and tested until
a) all the bugs are ironed out - and there will be plenty
b) computing power to run it becomes trivially cheap. Even then you'll probably be better off with XP.

Not a chance any time soon. In fact, if it wasn't for TinyXP, I probably would have "downgraded" to Win2k.

Never change a running system...

some say...

Anyway, I recently read a comparison test with a beta vista that showed CPU demand will not be so much higher in vista. But don't let you misslead from that, thats not the point, because the f** services can cause spikes and interrupt audio.

Speaking of senseless services in the background... that will be a problem as long as winlite and stuff to make "tiny XP" are adapted to make "tiny vista". And have versions of vista installed without all the nonsense..

The graphic stuff can be turned of, so thats certainly no point!

What will be the advantages?
It will handle more than 4GB of memory (XP64 does anyway)
It will handle more than 32 (or whatever the hidden limit is) Multimedia channels...

I'm running two RME fireface 800 and a couple of other devices... the problem is that windows XP can not manage that many multimedia channels and I'm loosing the channels of my Motu 8x8 midi interface if I have the firefaces turned on during start up... weird windows nonsense... RME and Motu confirmed that it is a problem of windows XP not being able to handle many multimedia channels during startup...

So this will be the reason for me to change to vista as soon it is bugfree (lol never) and I can make it tiny, because RME confirmed, that vista hasn't that problem with channel disappearing anymore....

Does anybody know from any other confirmed advantages for audio?

im also waiting to see what will happen.....right now my audiocard motu traveler has just got vista drivers i see, and i have 4 gb ram so......vista would be nice, but i think XP64 is better and less demanding - from what i heard from a dude who is running vista.

Anyhow, most plugins and other software won't work on both XP64 and Vista yet eh?           myspace.com/auralinvasion

Looking at microsoft.com i see this on XP64

Benefits:

Audio and music producers: With the massive addressable memory capacity of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition you can create, manipulate, and produce new music and audio experiences with unprecedented speed compared to 32-bit systems. The greatly expanded virtual memory capability not only handles much larger files, but also greatly reduces the time you spend waiting for audio files to finalize.

Anyhow, if most apps wont run it doesnt really matter how much better XP64 is. But i still think its an better alternative than vista
