i was just wondering if it is better to record virus ti's outputs through its analog outs to my sound card which is the emu 1616m or just leave it in virus control and record it as a vst? i have tried to compare which sounds better and i think it sounds very much the same although it does sound a little better recording from the analog outs i just don't know if its a good idea to go through d/a and a/d conversion to record the output. i dont know if i should let the usb cable handle the audio because i know usb is not the best for audio! what do you guys think? how do you use it to record audio? another way which i could do it is by the s/pdif which sounds like the best thing to do but i dont have the cable. should i get the s/pdif cable or just use the usb? i have quality analog cables balanced and unbalanced....... by the way do you know if the outputs on the virus are balanced? doesn't say on the back so i am assuming they are unbalanced....please help ... tnxx |

Its simple, if you want to use it with the software use USB, if you want to record it live use the analog outs.

Dude, I tend to recommend - go for the USB.
It's not that USB is not good for audio, it's just that firewire is better. USB2 can handle 4 mono channels (2 stereo) and MIDI data perfectly well, and as you said, there's absolutely no need to pass the signal through 3 A/D D/As (from virus out, into your recording software and once again on the way to the monitors), with USB the signal only meets D/A converter once
Also, the virus's analogue outs are balanced.

Here you go bro. Thats direct from Access:
4 - Recording and playback
When working with Audio Interfaces and Plug-ins, latency is
introduced. In general, the good news is that modern sequenc-
ers compensate for this latency once a track is played back.
The bad news is that often you have to record your performance
while feeling the latency, which most people consider to be
rather uncomfortable.
One advantage of the Virus TI’s analog outputs is that once a
part makes use of them, you will enjoy a lightning-fast response,
similar to the zero-latency feature on some of the better sound
cards.
While recording, we recommend that you switch the Main Outs
(Virus Control > Common Page) of the part you are about to
record to Analog 1+2 instead of USB. This way, the audio data
doesn’t need to travel from the Virus TI into the Virus Control
and from there to your audio interface; instead, it’s being sent
straight to the Virus’ analog outputs. Once you have finished
recording this particular track switch the Main Outs back to USB
to allow this part to be fully latency-compensated.
