Virus C & Sound Diver Problem

Okay, got a Virus C (os 6.5), got the OEM copy of sound diver installed on my win 98SE pc.

When trying to use sound diver to edit the virus patches my machine locks. The virus is correctly connected via midi (it works perfectly within cubase) and sound diver will load the selected virus banks correctly (although it states that there has been a midi in error). If I then select an entry to edit, the computer hangs.

I've downloaded the latest version of sound diver from Access' site but this doesn't work any better.

I use a midiman 4x4 midi card (surprisingly, for midi ) and a soundblaster 1024 sound card. The only thing I can think of is that the soundblaster's onboard midi is causing sound diver problems (i never use the soundblaster's midi), but I've got no idea on how to sort it.

If anyone can suggest any cures for this I'll be a very happy puppy (a happy puppy who doesn't have to use a 2 line lcd to edit his synth!)

Thanks peepl

It's hard to point out a solution. Looks like it is a software problem I believe.
I also believe that win98se is the cause.

soundiver is using the MIDI ports insanely alot - the whole system stability of 98 might be the problem.

I've used sounddiver with a nordlead - no problems on 2000 and XP.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Hey, Trip, when you are using sounddiver with Nord Lead, and you turn the knobs on your Nord Lead, are the buttons animated on the screen, or do they remain the same? Cause nothing happens in mine. Also I've noticed that it's not 100% accurate. In one patch for example I am using the Modulation Envelope, but in the Sounddiver it is shown that no modulation envelope destination is active. By the way which version do you have?
Psymantics, try older versions of sounddiver. With my Waldorf Xt, I had the same problem with the latest version and when I got the previous version it worked. SOunddiver is a bit buggy. It hangs a lot with my Waldorf as well.

I use sounddiver with my virus C, i have win 2000. No problems at all.
I think i also got i running with win98 without problems.

If you are sure you have set sounddiver to communicate with the virus on the right midi in/output and the right channel (usually 1) then it could also be that the virus is communicating with controllers instead of sysex.

Try this, press system/multiedit. scroll to the midi control parameter. set both lopage and hipage to sysex.

Now the virusc uses sysex instead of controllers.

When in cubase or any other sequencer u might want to go back to controller messages, they are a lot easier to edit

Also dont do anything else with your computer (not even winamp) when requesting data from the virus as this can cause problems if u have an older machine. for some strange reason sounddiver takes alot of resources.

Hope this helps, if not try writing access. They are happy to help.

i had the same problem with my virus....
there are options in the system menu of the virus
lowpage and hipage , you have to get those settings correct otherwise every now and then the machine just freezes.

many thanks everyone, I think it must be win 98se that's to blame (anyone sitting next to Bill Gates? If so, slap him for me!).

All the highpage/lowpage settings are correct, the version I'm using is 6.6 oem (I think that older versions do not support the new analog/moog filters available in the virus os 6.5, or that's what the manual said!).

Thanks again

SUCCESS!!!!

Those nice people at access have solved the problem. All I needed to do was increase the timeout settings in sound diver ( something to do with slowing the sysex messages).

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone experiences the same problems.
