I would like to buy a nice hardware synth at sometime throughout this year and would really like your opinion on the best synths around at the moment.

I have been checking out what some artists use and the virus c and clavia nord lead 2 appear to be very popular.

Has anyone ever actually used these synths before? What are your thoughts on both of these synths? What are the strong/weak points of each? and is it possible to say, overall, that one is any better than the other?

Thanks guys, hope you can give me some good advice.

HI,
I've bought virus c, very great hardware, but what king of music do you want to do ?
The virus is great for very full on sounds, and the nord is more trash.
But both are very good, when you have one you want to complete by the other (they are like brother)
Just one thing, virus is very expensive engine.
but you can buy this one on rack (but less pitch).

We've had a nl2 for a long time now. I must say when I had a fiddle with the virus I really wanted to buy it if i had the money.

I personally thought it was a lot more versatile than the NL and warmer sounding too.

I want to get the NL2. I am about to trade my Korg MS2000 and Korg Electribe drum machine, and pay $150 for the NL2.

Virus is also more expesive right now.

Thanks so much for the quick replies everyone.

Zendai, what do you mean the virus c rack has "less pitch"? And about what kind of music I want to make. Ideally, I want to be able to make all the sounds infected mushroom and hallucinogen make. I know they have heaps of hardware, but I need to start somewhere.

I am using lots of software at the moment and it's really great but there is just something about hardware that you can't beat.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

i think that when it comes to hardware you simply have to go and listen.. forget the wich one has more advanced options, ( both of them are great and easy to use) just go for the sound you like bro. no such thing as better or worse in synths..
its all a matter of your taste.

Well, how about the waldorf series? the Q/Attack and stuff sound most amazing, the NL/Virus became a default for somewhat reason. They are both great Synths, but for god's sake, be creative!

Anyway, The Virus Indigo2 sounds a Killer synth. try it out.!!
(Btw- I'd like to get both of 'em, but i have some synths higher in the "queue" )           "The Blues is'nt about making you feel better. It's about making others feel worse, and make a few bucks while you're at it." - "Bleeding gums" Murphey.

i own a virus indigo (phat bass sounds, warmer sound, killer fx, nice LFOs clocked, Loads of Arpegiattors Patterns and styles, Effects) and a nord rack 2 (Raw, nofx, good luck with the arpeggiator, killer sounds, the filter is a ferrari it will not whistle like KORG shit filter, depends on the user to get killer sounds + PCMCIA card recommended)

another thing the virus c has two filters, that's already an advantage to the NL2           www.vibramusic.com

Dont think twice dude...nord lead 2 is VERY old compared to the Virus C..the nord lead 3 MAY b competition but not the 2!!!!! I bought the virus B over the nord 2 man...THere is no question about this. My friend has a Nord 3(for one year) and some of its buttons are stuck! and ive heard of a nord 2 that stopped working... but my virus is like 4 years old and no problems..correct me if im wrong but Ive never heard of anyone who had problems like that with a virus synth! Id like to say that the virus is not full on as someone said cos i make prog trance and prog house...although it is killer for full on also

hey there i happen to have both virus indigo and nord lead 2 and what i can say is that the indigo has weird energetic noises and some awesome pads it has effects of all sorts and nice warmth sound whereas the nord lead 2 has a dry cut sound no effects but has that gmsian and alien projectian sounds that the full on crowd adore. nord lead 2 is very pop synth and it is entering into the mainstream like sh - 101 and jp8000 while virus c or indigo still holds some uniqueness to its sounds. both synths rock and i must say i couldnt have one without the other
