Hi all,
i need some help to make a decision. i wanna buy a hardware synth. the main task of it should be leads, FX and maybe pads too.
i would prefer the clavia at the moment, i like the "one knob per function" system, allthough i have heard that it isnt that good for pads? the virus seems to have more possibilities soundwise, but its not so intuitive due to its submenus..
i like the sound of both of them, so its just about possibilities vs. control.
maybe you could give me some pros and contras to make my decision easier
cheers |

I prefer the Nord Lead sound, but the Virus does offer a lot more sources and destinations, so will get more mileage from the Virus, FXwise.
Also bare in mind that you can only sync the LFO/Arp restart to MIDI on the Nord Lead1/2, which is close enough but no cigar.
Also the Nord Lead has no effects, which is a + imo, as it saves time deactivating the (shitty) effect on the Virus B, although that is besides the point when working with init patches.
But the Virus has a lot of hidden parameters under then damn submenus. It will take some getting used to, but if you stick with it, you'll get a lot out of it.
Having said all that, I much prefer the sound of the Nord Lead over the Virus when it comes to leads and basses.
I have a TI which I only use for effects nowdays and now that I have the Phatty, I can see the Virus getting redundant as soon as I get the FreqBox and RingMod Moogerfoogers.
There are plug ins which sound better than the Virus imo, like Logic's native ES2, Zebra 2 and I would also say Albino 3, but that is down to taste as well.
The best thing about the Virus are the wavetables, its arpeggiator and its many modes of FM, although the Nord Lead has "that" FM sound that sounds very digital, yet brilliantl. It has an average sounding LPF and poor sounding multimode filter. The Nord Lead high pass filter pisses over the Virus high pass filter from a great height. There are software filters that sound a lot better than the Virus BR, BP and HP filters, FilterFreak and MS-20 to name a couple.
Peace out.

ok, it seems that the nordlead wins, me likes
thanks for your detailed answer!
i think that it will fit well to my allrdy existing hardware (x0xb0x, mc-202 and some drummis).
another question: which nordlead would you prefer, 1 or 2? i often read, that the sound of the nordlead 1 is the best of them all, that it has something special :> what would make the nordlead 2 win?
a new micromodular sounds nice too, but it will be over my budget i guess... and its time for a synth with a keaboard
gonna check out the market for a nordlead.

The Nord Lead 1 has the rawest sound. I had it in the studio for about a year. The difference with the 2 is not big mind you, although it sounds very different to the Nord Lead 3, which although is nice sounding, it would not be my Lead of choice for psytrance.
But having said that, you will use the Ring Modulator on the 2 and will yield a much wider sonic pallete because of that.
There are some other slight differences which escape my mind now, look it up on the net for more info.
Peace out.

Yep, as we were all anxiously waiting for.
But it turned out to be a Nord Electro 4d something.
Big turnoff, as many of us wished for a synth rather than another Piano-kinda keyboard. |

Maybe Clavia should think of making some soft synths.
It would be just incredible to have something like an expanded version of the Nord Lead which we can all control with a hardware based Nord. |
