I downloaded the demo of this:

http://www.solar3d-software.com/

which is kind of cool, but don't really like the interface, knobs feel kind of fiddly to and there seems to be an unavoidable lag created, presumably, by the plug-in and hardware syncing to each other, and a real audio lag that's always present - wasn't when using it without the plug-in, stable enough to use it for bass, no problems.

so, there's that. perfectly cool for saving patches to disk, storing banks, so forth and so on though.

then, there's this:

http://rekonaudio.com/access-music/detail/7/flypage/26?sef=hcfp

unfortunately the price tag is a bit high for an editor, 70€, interface looks better but maybe to crowded, could be more organised in general, but usable and clear non the less. but assuming this thing will work in a similar fashion as the other one, maybe this lags are second nature to this kind of thing. have been through settings and all of that and couldn't get rid of it (settings as simple as selecting midi ports which you can't really miss, otherwise it wouldn't even play); would like to know if anyone's got any experience with this one or any of the others by rekon audio, 'cause I could use the store patches inside projects thing, plus being able to automate stuff more easily, so granted it works fine I'd def grab this. cheers

thanks m8

I'm known as Tweakhead over there btw.

But was looking for someone who's actually tested the reckon audio's editor before grabbing it. This is the kind of stuff that hardly gets a proper review and they don't have a demo in their website..

update.

I finally got the solar 3d (virus commander) plug-in working properly and very happy about it right now.

my work around was actually quite simple: on the settings window on the plug-in, you can place filters for stuff like "note in/note off" so that the plug-in isn't sending midi information to the device and vice-versa, while Logic (or any other host for that matter) is doing the same - this was the cause of the latency I talked about, and isn't really the developers fault, it's clearly explained on their website.

ok, so now I'm actually pleased with it and decided should say a word here about that, 'cause good developers shouldn't get bad pub anywhere. it's 20 euros cheaper then reckon audio's and handles multis much better imo. cheers

checked the bootcamp series and didn't find the one you're talking about

but yeah, Ben did a cool job doing those videos, even though the Virus is pretty easy to get around with, feel like I know every hole on this synth

They're being very smart here! The other editors don't cover the TI range, but this one does! The other developers seem to have overlooked this: even though the TI range comes with its own plug-in, it doesn't allow people to use it as a standard midi editor. Many people have been shouting at Access (on their official forum) to go ahead and do a simpler version of their Virus Control, that would work with good old fashion midi.

I guess Access doesn't do this, because that would mean accepting their mistake - and maybe more then that, since the Ti is priced quite high mainly because of this kind of features. But if Midi provides a tighter timing, audio through the analogue outs sounds better then using USB, and most people only want to be able to automate their synth's parameters within the DAW and be able to store patches inside a project anyways, plus an easy way to work with the Multis.

To put it simple: this makes the TI much more appealing for me. Would never grab it for the "integration" thing alone. What I'd like to get my hands on are the extra features that were added to the engine, along with being able to use separate reverb and delay per part. It's come a long way from the C (that I own), and got a lot of bad talk from either users that paid the big buck and failed to get it working as advertised (mainly the ti thing), and jealous people bashing it all the time, comparing it to just about any plug-in there is on the market - and there must be more text written about such absurdities then all the words in the Bible packed together.

The "total integration" thing is actually a good idea. But at the end of the day, you can see how it can drag a team of synthesizer coders into a nightmare of bug fixing like most software developers and it never quite performs as expected. Maybe they'll be able to sort things out with the next range, maybe with another kind of connection (current ones using usb1), but until then, good old midi is where the gold is and it's actually funny to see other developers profit from something that the developers should provide themselves - because it makes life easier for everyone.
