I've tried the demo and found it impossibly difficult to use. As much as I want to have fairly decent synthetic vocals in my tracks, I don't really want to spend 30 hours learning how to do it, then 2 hours implementing a 10 word phrase in tune.

For synthetic vocals I tend to use a crappy speech program ( actually this one is pretty good: http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php )
Then just use a vocoder to put it in tune.

entirely right.. I second that... But if you get your head round the learning curve (which is very very steep) it's a very powerfull machine... Just don't expect it to sound completely real But that's not a problem in electronic music anyway...
