Interviewee: Z1P from Frantic Noise

Ladies and Gentleman! Light your cigarettes! Fasten your dipers...cuz you are bout to enter Frantic Noise'World.

The Megalopsy and Frantic Noise touring is over now, for at least a couple of weeks. We've been traveling for such a long time and knowing so much people. It was a real great experience; we grew a lot as artists and as people. On the 22th of October we will be already playing in the Mexico Tour until the 11th of December. Check our blogspot to see some pictures and the complete story covering @ http://megalopsy.blogspot.com

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your magical music/life background. J
Well, what can i say about me, I'm Matias Benamo and I am just a scared little boy that avoids real life by hiding in his studio with dimmed lights, coca cola and cigarettes... an antisocial freak excusing all the time by saying... "i have to make music, you know, i can't go out now". My music background was always very open, I was always trapped by deep feeling music. When I was younger I used to listen a lot of hiphop, industrial, metal and new metal music such as: Rage Against the Machine, NIN, System of a Down, Korn, Sepultura, Metallica, Portishead, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. More or less some depressive demented stuff mixed up with some teenager nonsense violence. Later i would found more psychedelic stuff like the first albums of the Beatles, or great bands such as Led Zepellin, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Tool, Mr. Bungle, etc.
Our first project with Filter was when we were around fifteen or sixteen years old, playing together with 2 other guys in a grunge / metal band we used call "Ilness".

2. So, in Contrast of the project (Megalopsy) with Filter, what's the concept of Frantic Noise?
The concept behind Frantic Noise is not difficult to understand, it is music made for the body. I think both projects aim to the same point, blow you mind away. Megalopsy is more deep, dark and heavy trance while Frantic is more about keeping the energy flowing all the time. Made to cause that frenetic adrenaline release in your body, to generate that instant response that pushes you into the dancefloor and never out again. I think the main difference about this 2 projects will start to appear in the future releases, while Megalopsy will move into a more aggressive and hardcore psytrance style and Frantic Noise will remain energetic, groovy and apt for all audiences. Damn is difficult to describe your own music =).

3. Well, it definitely is. With rolling bassline and frantic sound mixed up, I think Frantic Noise is more energetic. And maybe you describe this magical and distant place ( The Nordland Orchestra) for us?
The Nordland universe is, as it says, a whole universe that doesn't belong to this galaxy. The Orchestra would be a chemical loop that takes place in everybody's minds, and represents our most deep feelings, emotions and tricks played inside our minds. Now the Nordland Orchestra are this strange guys you see in the cover which are directed by Lokutus, the dominant entity and desire that triggers every note and chord. Each track has his own character and special story representing the dark and twisted corridors of our minds, good and bad feelings, thinking that may cloud you consciousness, everyday news and social behavior. The whole thing is alive and breathing. I like also that the album is arranged backwards, it starts with one of the most fast and angry songs and ends with a very trippy downtempo track.

4. Talking about this album, I have noticed your album track Skyshack recording with line - "This is just a F...ff..few minutes agoOOoo, we don't know if, something happened, another explosion...Or if the building is so weaken, it just collapsed," inside. Where does this come from? 911 World Trade Center?
Yes in deed, you are not the first to like this track, but yes, you are the first to ask what is about the lyrics (speeches and track theme). It is not a 911 call but a reporter freezing when he sees the towers falling on the 9/11. It has a sky jacking theme because I think is the kind of tracks that could represent such an aggressive topic these days, and its our way to say, "man I don't agree on what you are doing". The part i like most is at the last bars when there is a line made out of a jet engine pitching up and down. I'm very sorry if it affects any American pride but this is the way we felt while recording the song.

5. So any other particular politics theme you made in this album? And do you usually like to express your feelings through the muzik? And do you think the artists should release his/her true emotion into his/her muzik?
I don't think there are more political issues or propaganda discussed in this album, for sure there will be more if the world continues to be as fucked up as it is nowadays. About the 2nd question i think Music is just feelings being expressed, the thing about the explosion of computers, warezed software and in the same way of producer-wannabes this days is that you can feel the lack of feeling in the music, i could say it is not even music anymore. Artists must express what they feel through their music, if they don¡¦t then anyone with a little bit of music taste will be able to feel the void when the open hats start but -nothing- really happens.

6. What's your true emotion about Psychedelic Trance?
My true emotion is .... I LOVE this music and this culture! In fact Nicolas and I as Megalopsy and Dark Prisma have just started to focus 100% of our energies on making a lot of new music, releasing our and other artists' music and touring with Megalopsy and Frantic Noise. We did our first touring attempt this 2006 summer all around Europe (Portugal, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Czech Republic) and it was great experience. We met a lot of good people and all this crazy parties where the real psychedelic scene lives. I loved it, now we will have to stick around to see what happens. After BOOM i can only say that this culture is more alive than ever and that it makes much more sense than any other thing in this world. It's blossoming like never before, and the best part is that we are being part of it. I like this culture because it really opens the mind of the people, because it really reaches the mind of the audience. If the event is well organized, like Boom was, then there is a lot to learn and explore in terms of ecological and environment care, self consciousness exploration, or any other cultural / hippie material such as Mayan culture, electricity saving, yoga, anything. Then I think you can really see the change in the people, also in the extreme party people, that instead of taking drugs until the next day, they sit and enjoy a talk or a workshop and then go down to sleep. You have to provide this tool to the people, and psychedelic trance does.

--------------Part 2 -----------------
7. Yea, I totally agree with you. The scene needs positive ecological and environment education. Before we get into the some serious questions, how's the feedback touring in Europe?
It was very good, most of the time. I must say I felt a little bit out of place playing some Frantic Noise tracks for example in Belgium where they are used to really heavy psytrance jeje. It was this really dark and underground location with a very deep dark and goth vibe. One way or another you make them dance, or you just make the girls dance and then the boys don¡¦t have any other choice, jeje. Very good experience jej, now that i have a week here in Buenos Aires i have finished a killer track at 150 bpms honoring this fast and crazy europe summer.

8. What's your observation of the scene right now after finishing tour with Filter, and also went to Boom Festival this year?
As i said the scene is blossoming and growing into the next step, a step I hope has a lot of more consciousness about the self, the planet, the culture, the people and everything. Boom is the perfect example of how an event must be organized. I also think the scene will grow mainly in America in the next few years. Brazil, Mexico, Argentina or any of the rest will hold the best and biggest festivals because the aviability of party spots and friendly legislation, the police is very flexible and easy to fix, everything is cheap because of the dollar price which will bring huge amounts of people. Also the girls are a very important factor, they are more tasty on this side of the Atlantic. Seriously, i think Boom is planning to move to Brasil in the future, i dont know where i heard that.

9. As both a promoter and artist, even the label owner of Dark Prisma Records in Argentina, (u must has three heads, six arms, hour legs¡Kƒnƒº) how's this culture develop in your country?
Psytrance scene in our country is very small, growing slowly but surely. As Brasil or Mexico, we have a big crowd that goes to the mainstream events once in a while but are not real psychedelic people, they are ravers or clubbers that go there for high db's and high feelings. They don't really care about the music or how many drugs they take. We had some big parties in the last 2 years with big names as: Infected Mushroom, GMS, Astral Projection, Sesto Sento, Analog Pussy, Neuromotor, etc where all these 'club' people attended and make like a thousands people crowd. Then when there is like a small party with a national line up then you have a 300´s crowd at most. The good thing is that we always made the musical side move a lot. With the label, with the label parties, making new people go live and debut, with promotion over a some of internet sites... i was always trying to convince people to produce psychedelic music, to get serious about it. Giving them tips, tricks, presets, drum samples, or anything that could help. I even gave lessons on psytrance style and producing in the only music school oriented to production here in Buenos Aires ( www.escuelasonica.com.ar). It was a lot of fun showing these guys that come from traditional trance, deep house or drum&bass how to make a fucked up bassline or they faces as they listen to Penta for the first time. They got really hooked on my lessons but I couldn¡¦t continue because of the touring. I wish i could some day.

10. Collaborating with artists like Collapse, Audiopathik, Pragmatix and even your old mate ¡V Filter, how does the vibe flow in the album?
Making music with people is always funnier and more interesting than making music alone, it is different. When im working with Collapse the energy always flows very well, we are close friends since we are very little and the energy always flowed that way, we like to work together. You will be able to listen some new tracks we've been producing together, we have 3 new ones as Noise Collapse, our new joint project. With Pragmatix as well, he is a very talented boy and we always enjoyed sharing the studio together. With Filter the energy is renewed and stronger than ever, we paused our production a little bit when i was finishing my album, but during the tour we've been some very good music and very intense. We also managed to contribute with other artists such as Ankur from Noise Poison in Germany and Poison Engeneers (Kophat and Helder from Portugal ). The results are demolishing. About Audiopathik, its crazy because we never met in reality, this track on the Nordland Orchestra was done by sending wave files over the internet, very good and funny way to work! and I think the result is pretty good as well! Hopefully Alex and I are gonna meet in Mexico this year!

11. Any particular track that you really want to make a remix?
I dont have a paper with the answer to that, oh my god! Seriously i dont know. I havent thought of that in a long time, since i did the remix on the blues brothers song that is on the Amalgama compilation. The other day i was thinking to remix the Space Cadet track in the Abstract Machine album. I would be a very good remix.

12. What are your favorite tracks from yourself or other artists?
From myself? The last one, always. From other artists i dont know, i liked a lot from Penta's Funraiser: Eater of Worlds, September and Past Holidays but i like everything he does. Others, Ghost Ship from U Recken. Mental Distorted from Seroxat (old 150 bpm song from him). My Beloved One from Double R.E.L. emm.. What else? For the next one i'll bring a small list jeje.

Before we wrap it up, thanks Matias for having extra time doing this great interview, I would recommend you to read Megalopsy's Travel Blog ( http://megalopsy.blogspot.com), which is interesting and funny. ļ

Anything you want to say?
No problem brother, it was my pleasure, i really enjoyed this interview and it was very nice to know you too.
