I know there have been a lot of threads about 'dark-psy' but they have either been people saying it's rubbish and not music at all, or saying it's great. That's not the point of this one.

What i'm asking is - if you say you like 'dark-psy' - do you REALLY like it?

Btw, when i say 'dark-psy' i don't necessarily mean music that is dark and menacing but 'music' that seems to be just a collection of random squeaks, squeals, squelches and whizzes.

I'm sure there are people that honestly do like it, and if this is the case you shouldn't be offended - but i think a lot of people just pretend to like it for one of two reasons:

To try to look 'hard' and 'cool' ( like Fonzie's nob )
Similar thing happens in music like punk, metal, rap or anything no-conformist, 'evil' or against society. Suppose it's just part of growing up.

To try to look intellectual or 'special'
The old 'Emperors New Clothes' shit (ie. pretending to 'see' something others can't). Again, a similar thing happens in music like Modern Jazz, some types of Lo-Fi/IDM and experimental avant-garde. If this was a different forum then you would probably hear 'That John Cage's 4 minutes 33 seconds of silence is fukin' killaaaaaaah!'

If you honestly - and i mean HONESTLY - like this stuff then you yourself will probably know the kind of people i am talking about - and if you are one of these people, in years to come you will no doubt look back and think 'Jesus, wasn't i a dick!'

I know its a cliché but you do only live once and music can play such a big part in life so isn't it better to be true to yourself and listen to what you like instead of what you are told (or expected) to like. Life really is way too short.

Peace.

i do REALLY like dark psy.i do REALLY like a lot of good music, not necessarely trance...

This isn't really about dark-psy at all (or any of the other types of music i mentioned - some of which I like) and it’s definitely not dissin it. This is about the way people follow others just to conform or make themselves look superior.

I think I get your point, now that the dark-psy sphere is burst (in this thread), but in the end it is a very obvious statement.. There have always been "avant-gardes" and followers in all what is related to creation and/or style.

The numerous discussions about the necessity of the Psy scene to remain underground or to lift up are a part of it.

The first people digging a particular thing, may it be music, design, fashion, any form of art are often not to say always basically critisized or concidered non-conformists.

And when the interest in this particular stuff raises it does systematically "lose" something. Because the "newcomers" didn't really care about the 'cultural/emotional' background of it, but just the structural aspects.

In my personal experience it is typically what happened with Techno, and the lost of the freedom, the spontaneity and let's say the naïvety (note that these three terms are complementary) as more and more people were going out in clubs or festivals during the week-ends..

More and more codes have been put in place, that may be called "progression" or "evolution" by the people who take advantage of it, and on the contrary "steps back" or simply "wrong way" for the people who were in it from the beginning.

And we get the usuals fights between the 'old' and the 'new' generation.

To remain in the techno 'genre', this "evolution" made some deejays being nowadays "stars" with the same "aura" as actors or rock stars..

Because of this "people like 'em because they have been told it's cool", I personaly don't agree in example with the status of people like Carl Cox or DJ Rush that are in the end nothing special, in comparison with some others that are objectively much more skilled than them.

Yes, 20 millions of Carl Cox fans "CAN" be wrong.. But not because they're silly or whatever, just because they are let's say "passive" audience who don't look for the best ingredients but just eat what they're given in the plates..

I don't think it's quite dark enough yet... But it is getting darker and darker with some new faces that push it further and further into the extremes. Really looking forward to hearing more Japanese acts and lots of the Devilsmind stuff is getting me excited...
The drug. It's made from monkey cum.
They keep these monkeys locked in a room all day. Then they make them jack off. Then they take the cum and boil it. That's what the drug is made of.

To clarify my earlier statement..

I think finding the right music for yourself depends as much on knowing yourself as knowing the music. The better you know yourself, the better you know which music you really like. It's a metaphysical journey that never stops and I think that's one of the reasons musical tastes change as people grow and evolve with age.

and no, IMO there is no clear correspondence between age and the kind of music people listen to. but that's a whole other discussion.

          ..it's just another party..

I am a fan of psychedelic music period. For me what gets classified as psychedelic is all those strange noises. I do like some more synth content than just strange noises, however I am not that big of fan of goa melodies and fluff... I really enjoy music that has those wierd sounds that you can't describe but still having a sense of synth content that will assist to drive the dancefloor. It's all about balance for me... So do I really like psychedelic music, of course as long as there is a sense of balance, or the track has a "moment of clarity" inside of it... I find that in many artists and a lot of them just happen to be placed in this category. In the end you just have to determine what you feel is psychedelic for you and gravitate toward it without feeling the need to limit its capabilities by defining it as a genre...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
