Burn in Noise - Broken MP3 -- Vagalume Records

Burn in Noise is Gustavo Manfroni Amaral de Souza, a young producer from Brasília (Brazil’s Capital).
Brasília is my hometown too, and I had the opportunity to hear Gustavo playing as Burn in Noise (he has other projects) many times. I’m sure he’s producing psytrance music for more than 4 years...

I never talk to him, because I don't like to bother artists and DJs at parties... Too many people saying all kind of bullshit to them... But I'm a careful observer of my city's scene (There are lot's of artists and DJs there: Burn in Noise, Spiritual Enhancer, Fuzzy Project, The First Stone, DJ GARU, DJ ICE, DJ Swarup and others) and always paid attention in the way the artists develop their sounds.

I bought it together with some other new releases, but choose review it later, because I wanted to listen it many times before writing the review.

Burn in Noise already released tracks in lot's of labels like Solar Flares, Com.Pact, Wajanga, Headroom Productions and Shiva Space Japan.

Vagalumne records is an old Brazilian label (I heard about it since a long time ago), but I think this is their second release.

Cover Art: The cover art shows a circular pattern filled with what seems to be wires. Different cover and surprise: it was designed by Gustavo... So He made the music and the Graphic Design.

Package: Standard Brazilian package, nothing to add. There’s no mention to tracks times and BPMs...

Track List (BPMs and Time accord with my CDJ and Mixer):

1 - What Good 145 BPM -- 7:35
2 - Formiga Atômica 145 BPM -- 7:03
3 - Daydream Nation 145 BPM -- 7:15
4 - Safi 145 BPM -- 7:19
5 - Let’s Go 145 BPM -- 7:50
6 - XZ 145 BPM -- 7:26
7 - Broken MP3 145 BPM -- 7:23
8 - Servus 145 BPM -- 7:23
9 - Flight Number 145 BPM -- 9:24

Let’s see this Brazilian debut track by track:

1 - What Good --> This track starts with a sample that I don't understand. Damn it! But the groovy intro makes me forget that. WOW! Strong bass! My head just hit the wall! And groovy breaks! PUUMMMPPPIINNG Bass! Good way to start a full on release.

2 - Formiga Atômica --> This track name means: "Atomic Ant", if I remember correctly this was the name of a cartoon... A kind of super hero called "Atomic Ant". It's a strong track. Fierce bassline at 4:40 we have long build up and in the end the sample says something like "Formiga Atômica", but it's very distorted. After this I smiling and dancing... Nice atmosphere in this track.

3 - Daydream Nation --> Another pumping bass? How many this guy have under his sleeve? Powerful track, I like the final part.

4 - Safi --> This track is pumping! Strong bass, nice breaks and even some groove. But the end could be better IMO.

5 - Let’s Go --> One minute of intro in this track... Then a groovy bass appears... But I know Gustavo's way of doing music, and when he starts this way it because things are going to get hot... around 2:40 we have a much faster bass and melodies... I imagine myself dancing in the sun... 4:30 a break and BOOM! I'm jumping! What a pumping bass! Great track. Another break and let’s Go again!

6 - XZ --> After a little intro, the bass in the start already got me. I know it will be one of my favorites... What the hell is the build up at 5:00?!? I can't write... Too busy dancing... Powerful and psychedelic as well. Good Work!

7 - Broken MP3 --> This track has the same name of the album... Let me hear it... At 2:15 we have the characteristic break of this track... Well done, creates some expectative... At 4:10 we have the sample:

"Yes, Yes, Yes, you sound like a Broken MP3."

After that the characteristic break and I'm dancing. But it seems it lack something in the end.

8 - Servus --> Starting with a metalized voice, and a strange bass, this track evolves into a dance floor moving track in less than one minute. At 4:00 psychedely give the direction to my dancing way... GOOOOOD track! The melodies at 5:20 are welcome!

9 - Flight Number --> This track is an ambient track... for almost 3 minutes... Then after a in - fuc#ing - credible build up, it turns out to be a fierce dance floor directed track. Long track, it´s a journey into the full on realms...

Favorites: 1, 5, 6(!!), 8(!!), 9. A point to improve could be using lower BPMs to improve the groovy side or faster BPMs to add even more power to some tracks...

Verdict: 8/10

With this concise debut album, Gustavo shows to the world he developed his own style. This is no clone or copy & paste music, it's something very different from Astrix, GMS, Eskimo, etc, but works at dance floors AND have a creative edge. Good kicks, different build ups and percussion in most tracks.

The production level is very good. The baselines develop in creative ways and in many tracks it shows a psychedelic touch that unfortunately is missing in most full on releases these days. All tracks are 145 BPMs, which means it's easy even to inexperienced DJs to spin it.

Only 69 minutes of sounds... Why not put another track in this release? Maybe a remix to some track... It's a constructive criticism: I'm sure one more track or a rmx would please much more the fans, other artists (who will know better Gustavo's work) and even the producer (Burn in Noise) because it have the potential for opening new doors to him, new collaborations, for example, when other artists see the way he remix tracks.

I recommend this release, specially if you like different BASS Lines and want add something peculiar to your Sets.

After reading Full On's review i decided to download the album. Its been playing on winamp on a continuous loop since the last one week. Definitely one of the better full on releases in the last few months. This is a very talented musician, all tracks have some thing different to offer.

Well i'm not really a music critic so i'll leave the track by track reviewing to guys like Full On. All i can say is the CD is definitely worth much more than the $15 that it costs.

I ordered mine a week back from Saiko sounds , should be getting it any time. Can't wait to blast it on my Bose speakers after listening to it till now on my computer speakers.
