Why not expand this section?
I mean, there is only a "links" forum but why not create a forum that will allow to discuss, well, off topic issues! 
Like: Favorite food, movies, books etc.
I think it'll be great to get to know eachother more easely...

maybe instead of "links" it should be "funny stuff" - with jokes, funny links\pictures etc...
i've seen this work well in other forums.

my thoughts:
we added an off-topic section to our 1300 member forum about 2-3 months ago, so users could post their random thoughts/links/etc without spoiling the content of normal threads. now the result is massive posting of dialogs between 2 or 3 users with no relative content at all, something msn or icq is more suitable for ...
i think that when you look at the psynews offtopic area you get a pretty good idea about how this would look in bigger forums... (i think here it would get even more posts)
it would become such a large quantity of random -not that important- information it would be of interest only to a few postsers, and drag the all-round level of conversation way down...

btw we used offtopic in old forum version
as result the sum of all categories' posts couldn't be compared with the offtopic's posts ammount
it just turned this forum into advanced trash system
so we removed it and left only links
may be some more interesting things we'll add
in future to offtopic, but never FULL offtopic
otherwise forum would die..
