I'm not suggesting it's exclusive to software development at all, I feel it applies to any topic, or skill really. Several researchers/writers have concluded that genius level of a subject takes about 10,000 hours or more.

oh, sorry dharma.
I was just saying, its difficult for the musicians aswell, with piracy and all. So, developers can't expect to much sympathy from me. we're all in the same boat.
so no use arguing. rather debate whats the best solution.
i was suggesting the $10000 daws to milk the benefactors, but got stopped dead in my tracks.
there is a much deeper problem underneath all this common world problems which probably goes far beyond the scope of this thread. (a thought that keeps me out of sleep for many nights)- that is::
>People have more children that is in their capability to provide for a reasonable future,, they put a burden on all the rest of society.
It creates a nasty chain that contributes to every major problem in this world, staring with;
*weak economy,
*job shortage,
*food shortage,
**THEFT(and piracy)
*violence,
*WAR
for these same reasons,, this world would have been a better place without me.
I don't blame parents. It is our human nature to spread our genes. is it not?

Practically what happens is that everyone has their own opinion, and the majority who's ideas agree, yield the most influence on the government to have their opinion passed into law.
Morality is a statistic. Any other perspective is infantile.
Its just a mass action of similarly operating individuals, overpowering lesser mass actions.
I wouldn't get choked up with guilt for not operating similarly to the majority. Just don't get on its bad side.

I'm sure he would love to sell this for $1k and sell 100X units than he does but he obviously can not, because if he could he would. If it was possible to make digital copies of this synth, you still wouldn't be able to "afford" it because it just would have never been made.

Why stop at 10k?
The problem is this idea that companies are "milking" someone...Here is synth that cost $20k USD...Don Buchla is hardly flying around in a chartered private jet.
imo, No person on earth works hard enough to deserve his own privet jet..
Why so greedy?

in the end that discussion has NOTHING to add for anybody... its just a bunch of egos pointin finger tryin to prove that one s better than the other coz one have the money to buy softwares and smoke marroco hash and the other waste his time smokin weed and turnin up the freedom flag... with all that discusion it seems that money buys a place in heaven XD
so why should i buy software ?
its easier if i save my money to buy a sit in the paradise..... ( of course its not my opinion but what one can conclude after readin that topic.. )
and in the end, noooothing to add
the world will keep going on if steinberg or cakewalk or clavia or whatever bankrupt ... it wont make any difference, and OBVIOUSLY music will continue to exist... sigh.... and maybe even more psychedelic....
some people around here talk as MUSIC nowadays was turnin around those 20 k that mister BLA BLA BLA wastes to invest in their product
and imo those people should put those 20 k up their @ss.....

Evereone decides for himself. Ultimately, it's about what makes you feel better anyway.
To me, listening to "Daze of Our Lives" is an extra motivation to find a job. So that I could finally buy a legit copy of it and pay the artist for hours of enjoyment I got from his music. I know that it will make me feel better. Some day buying a legit copy of Ableton will make me feel better too.
(Don't get me wrong, mortgage is a pretty good motivator too - but that's different...)
In a way it doesn't sit well with me to take something without paying for it - based on shared rules that we rely on - we expect people not to take things unless we agreed to the terms.
Practically - the pricing model that many software companies use does not cater to the individual user, might be good to have a model that allows affordable purchases for single users - with a full working 30 day trial to see if it is what you need. In absence of this, the alternative is " try before buy " .
It really matters to me how the actual developers feel about warez and are effected by it. I heard that some software developers themselves do not mind if individual users who would otherwise never buy the product, can use a warez copy - it does actually expand the potential customer base, and promotion of the products.
When I was managing Cytopia.org I had a double feeling about piracy - it was good advertising for us - but it only works if x% of the population keeps buying so we have an income to stay operational.
My sentiment is that if you earn money producing, invest in the industry that creates the tools that you use. If you are inspired by music, buy the CD to support the artists who created it. It may not be feasible for some of us to buy all the best software - but think it is a matter of spending the money we do earn wisely.

Wicked Legal Affordable Music Downloads in CD Quality
Furthermore, cd's are fair priced and made in an eco-compatible way (like the hosting of site).
This is the way i like it!
edit: i forgot to mention that i've already bought the physical cd cause i like to support them and to listen and store it in the best way!http://soundcloud.com/alphadelphi
