i've decided to move some of my dvds to my computer. since i'm new to this kind of operation i've had some trouble on the way. the dvds are now in .vob format on my hd but they take lots of space. what is the best "lighter" format comparing quality and file size? avi, mpeg4, quicktime... just too much to choose from and what about the frame rate and frame size? anything else i should think of? i've been using mpeg streamclip for test conversions...
thanks for your help!

I would strongly recommend against it. The DVD or MPEG-2 format is outdated as it is. If you have or planning to have an HDTV than better leave it as it is. I barely can watch DVD as it is today, watching compressed SD content is really hurting my eyes.
Just upgrade the hard drive, they are very cheap nowadays.
I made a small NAS with an old 80Gb and I store a few Live Concerts on it that I ripped myself.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

hmmh. ok, thanks for the reply. but IF you would compress files what format would you use
and what compression settings would you prefer?
i guess i'm going for this: keeping the good quality .vobs on my home hd and compress some favourites to the portable one(s).           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby

I can't recommend really, it all looks crappy on HDTV afterwards... Seriously you'll be very sorry in a few years from now           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

i'm still keeping the dvds in .vob format too so you can rest assured. so let's forget the HDTV for a moment shall we? i'm asking for the best compression format for watching some favourites on a _laptop_ or _ipod_ f.e. while traveling. and no, i'm not traveling with a 42" HDTV and 5.1 sound system           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby

A ha!
Now you're talking.
Quality wise I think the best compressing format is Quick Time. It's also the standard choice of people in the "industry".           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

let's say for a 15" laptop screen: what frame rate and frame size would you recommend with quicktime format? anything else i should keep in mind while compressing?
*squeezing all the info out what one can*

The frame rate and resolution should remain the same as the source!           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

I second that.

I think the comprssion is called sorison video 3 in after effects. Makes for the best quality .mov

Absolutely not. Mpeg 4 compression beats Quicktime compression by a long shot. The reason why Quicktime is used in the industry is because Pro Tools is industry standard and accepts .mov files.

Sorenson is good as well, but does not match Mpeg 4 either. It does come a lot closer than Quicktime though...

I suggest you compress 1 piece into all the formats and then decide for yourself.

Btw. if you mess with framerate and sampling rate you have to know what you're doing. Otherwise your movie is out of sync. While you won't always recognize this at the beginning of the movie, it will suck more once you get towards the end and depending on your software the movie might not play back properly...

I don't know, in this case I'll have to believe my eyes only and not the numbers. Quicktime trailers always look better than their Mpeg-4, Mpeg-2 counterparts. I don't know why and I don't know how but they just are.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me
