well.
i will do it short...
some other dude will folow and do it longer...
so, for short:
you got:
goa - old school like MFG, Astral projection, Doof, etc...
minimal and proggresive - less noise and lower BPM, comes from techno sometimes, like - reefer decree, sbk, etc...
full on - fast, hard and agressive like Talamasca, GMS, etc...
Techno trance - hard pumping but more metalic and less psychedelic like techno, like - Midimilis, new Delta, Paste etc...

well, u sould look for those words (minimal, full on...) and u will see more artists names for each style !
have phun....
;)

Ok
Goa - the "Oldschool Trance", the root of all trance sub-geners. Melodic, Uplifting music, with lots of noises, beeps and blips, tons of buildups, very very psychedelic music.
psytrance - aka psychedelic trance - the more "cleaner" version of Goa music, usually relies on more musical aspects than simple booming of kick drums. aka fullon.
club trance - a mellow version of trance, very kitch, very melodic, and also very clean in build and structure, very predictable music.
Nitzhonot - the israeli version of club trance - very very uplifting, simple, melodic trance.
minimal/proggressive trance - as the name implies, a lot cleaner than most generes, mainly kick/bassline games with percussions in the bacground. few melodies are there, and even those are nonwithstanding.
techno trance - again, the name implies - this trance sub genere derives from the techno roots, as well as from industrial music and goa/psy.

so, psy-trance = full-on?
I'm quite confused also.

what about Hamburg Trance, Australian Trance, European Trance? Is there any genre difference or they just come from different places?

well, it does make some difference for me. Especially when you try and find CDs and parties you like. If I know the sub-genres, I have some idea whether I would enjoy the music or not. Otherwise, the only choice is to go there and see if "it makes me move".

Moreover, it seems to me that having defined and agreed-upon genres and sub-genres is in some way an indicator of a "mature" music, a musical artwork.

I know this sounds academic, but that's just my point of view. I would love to have a clearer understanding of this type of music in itself.

You can rarely define a track as being only one genre. Even the definitions of the genres are not accurate. Many tracks have combinations of different genres, common ones are full-on & goa, psy & techno.
