Vertex
Vertex is a collaboration between Nikola Kozic (Zyce) and Slobodan Gacesa (Dj Merlin, former member of the Flegma project) started in the year 2008 to produce Progressive House – Trance tracks influenced by Chillout sounds. This 4 track EP is a preview of the upcoming album that is expected to be released later this year also on TesseracTstudio.
Vertex – Archipelago EP (TesseracTstudio Digital)
1. Oceanos
In 2007 German producer GMO released one of the most underrated album of the last 5 years, Landscapes, on the label Yellow Sunshine Explosions. This EP and particularly this debut track Oceanos is a good opportunity to rediscover that album, since its influence on this production is rather evident. The track opens with a sexy piano-line on top of tribalistic percussions. The mood remains relaxing even when the kick is finally introduced at the 2.30 mark. Various melodic layers are added and removed, as the song keeps a very chilling mood throughout it. Also the outro is extremely long for a production that for once is first concerned about delivering a musical experience, rather than only be built for the dancefloor.
2. Archipelago
To deliver the sense of a journey in the ocean, Archipelago opens as the previous track closed, with the sound of waves. The kick is slightly more pounding, but the trancey melodic arrangement and lush atmospheres are still present. Archipelago is a track that brings us back to the golden age of melodic and balearic Progressive Trance in the early 2000 and we can only really thank Vertex for that.
3. Hungary Dance
Hungary Dance pretty much follows the same formula as Archipelago, but offers a more clear direction and progression. The main flute-like melody is slightly on the cheesier side, but Vertex makes up for that with a really nice atmospheric breakdown driven by a piano-line progression. Hungary Dance is a more dancefloor oriented track, but remains faithful to the concept behind the Vertex project and consequently this EP.
4. Vertex & Float – Oceansphere
Oceansphere is a track produced in collaboration with Float, a project started by Vladimir Mihajlovic in 2008. Float that just recently released his debut album Liquid on Iono Music. Another group that has been listed among the influences for the Vertex project is the almost legendary Sweden duo Vibrasphere and this Oceansphere in particular has some sounds that remind in particular to the recent collaboration with Ticon, Dewdrops. Do not worry this track still has his own identity and is not a total ripoff. The bassline in particular will for sure cause heavy damages in this year open air season.
Verdict: TesseracTstudio could have hardly made a better choice as first EP to release on his new digital only label. It was good to hear sounds that too many people have too early declared as dead and we can really only wait for Vertex debut album to be released. If we have to pick two tracks, we particularly liked Oceanos and Archipelago, but this is an EP that is best heard from start to finish..
