First review of Andrew/Drewfactor for Trancealert.com. Hope you will appreciate his contributions to the website.

For those of us observing the evolution of the Psychedelic Trance scene lately, it is hard to miss the fact that Serbia is a powerhouse of production talent from the likes of E-Clip, Zyce, Flegma, Nerso, et. al. A recent addition to this roster is Versi and he presents us with his debut EP: Vril Society.

Versi

Versi is Goran Paradjina a 21 years old Croatian native that had to move to Novi Sad in Serbia due to the war. His passion for Psychedelic Trance emerged in the middle of the past decade, but learning how to produce music is only a recent interest. He has previously published a track on Ektoplazm, but this is his first official release.

Versi - Vril Society (Geomagnetic.tv)

In keeping with the sound we have come to expect from the Serbian scene, most notably from the TesseracTstudio, this unique ep offers crisp and clean production quality with driving basslines, techy grooves, along with interesting synth effects and melodies. Definitely on the darker side of the Progressive spectrum, all of the tracks here deserve of being played on a big sound-system, in a "lights and lasers off" club environment where one can get lost in the bass-grooves and ominous, trippy sounds.

1. Vril Society

Approximately one minute and 30 seconds into the track, the ambient intro almost unexpectedly winds down for the kick and a "no holds barred" 16th note rolling bassline. As the track builds, the techy hi-hats and futuristic syth sounds give way to a slightly unconventional breakdown where the bassline switches to a simple off-beat groove, until returning to the 16-note rumbler with a slight melodic change. There's not much of a melody to speak of in this track as the beats and bass take the forefront while the synth melodies that are scattered through the track provide more of an atmospheric effect. All in all, probably the weakest track on this release since it is lacks some depth and flow.

2. Ocultism

An evil sounding, pitched-down voice saying something indecipherable starts this track before kicking into gear with a generic, chugging bassline and kick that one would expect from the aforementioned artists at the beginning of this post. Definitely more groove and melodic flow from this number as the tech-inspired hit-hats, clap, and sound-effects blend more smoothly with trancey melodies, which fill out the upper-middle frequency range but remain very much in the background. So, if you're expecting this to break out into an "hands in the air" melody you'll surely be disappointed. Something more melodically inspired could have been added to this track to keep our interest, but nonetheless a fairly good original effort here.

Green Light – Fire Dance (Versi Remix)

This remix is done in a similar style and feel as Ocultism. At about the 04:15 mark, the breakdown involves a pleasant flute-like melody that (unfortunately without much flow) slams straight back into the rhythmic body of the track. Again melody is kept to a minimum, but it has its effectiveness when reintroduced briefly before the outro, thus making the track sound more complete. The melodic minimalism also provides a nice contrast to the overall "dark" feeling of this track, a parallelism with the other tracks on this ep.

Verdict: While there's nothing groundbreaking here, it is still worth checking out. Those who like the work of Ectima (Zyce and Flegma) will likely appreciate this release as it is reminiscent of their debut album 'No Way Out' which is, incidentally, also released on Geomagnetic.tv. Versi will be someone to keep an eye on as it is likely that any elements of the tracks, such as poor flow and/or progression, will be rectified with production experience through future releases..

Tracks to not miss in order of preference: 2, 3.
