I've plenty of software in my studio, but very little in the way of hardware. I'd like more hands on control during the various stages of song production. Therefore, I need suggestions as to what type of equipment to add.
Control surface?
Hardware keyboard synth?
Desktop synth?
Effects processor?
Outboard EQ or compressor?
What was your first or favorite piece of hardware and why? Does hardware make the creation process easier for you?

Presumably you have the computer/soundcard, monitors and controler covered (although this stuff is hardware, I don't understand why some people think about soundcards/monitors...etc when the word "hardware" comes to mind), the thing that would probably make the biggest difference is a nice analog synth and an good channel strip with pre/EQ/compressor to record the analog synth(s) through, but the soft synths as well.
If the analog synth has an envelope follower to put external audio through it's stages, you can route soft synths through a nice analog filter and add quite a bit of character to your current sonic palletes.
Other than that a good budget Lexicon like the MPX-1 will help a alot.

if you have access to someones studio, go and spend some time there, jam, listen whatever, you'll see what kind of gear you gravitate towards, if you dont have a lot of money to spend right away try to get versatile instruments and effects .
yes hardware made creation easier for me, when i bought my first synth it was like discovering a whole new dimension to sound .
hardware was the way to go for me .

I probably should have mentioned that I have sound and desktop performance covered...
Running
AMD Ath 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz
E-MU 1820 digital audio system
Alesis Masterlink hard-disk recorder
Mackie HR 624's
Monster Power Pro 2500
Right now I'm leaning towards a 16 or 32 digital console hoping that hands-on control will help me with mix technique. Or maybe something less expansive that I can use along with DJ performances and Ableton Live.
But I also like the idea of a hardware synth, especially if it can process external audio as effects - that sounds like a cool feature!
Thanks for the input peeps.
