It sounds like the waveshapes in the synthesiser would be generated by mathematical points and curves for a very accurate sound, rather than, say a recorded sound. Although I would have thought this would be the same as analogue hardware anyway?

I confuse myself..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vector_synthesis

Hope this clears things a bit... its actually nothing else then having a XY-Pad where you can mix sources on a two dimensional (could be even 3 with some cool new input devices) basis. These are the so called vectors which indicate on how much the sound sources / effects are being mixed / layered.

There are a couple of vst effects out there that have the functionality of an XY-Pad built in, so you can route different sounds into the "corners" of it.

The possibility to record your "twisting" session as you move your mouse/finger over the pad is a nice way on creating wierd stuff live and then for example have it loop.

imagine the pad being used as a scratch crossfader...wave scratching??

Some soft synths if you would like to try the Vector Synthesis by yourself:

1. General Vibe VectorSector by Joshua Jeffe, (engineer wrote the VS firmware at Sequential Circuits - 1986)

http://www.generalvibe.com
It has a demo available there. Check out!

http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1502.html
"...VectorSector accurately recreates the sound of the Sequential Prophet VS, the classic and sought-after wavetable synth from the mid-80s. It includes reconstructed versions of the original factory presets utilizing mathematically derived waveforms, and adds several enhancements such as variable polyphony (up to 16 voices), expanded control ranges, and additional modulation routings..."

http://remixmag.com/transmissions/mr-vectorsector-102705/
"...Several companies have taken their own lean on vector synthesis in the recent past (most notable the Korg Wavestation Legacy and Wusik.com Wusikstation), but none have paved a direct path to the door of the original vector synthesizer—namely, the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS. And who better to tackle this task than General Vibe founder Joshua Jeffe, who wrote the VS firmware at Sequential circa 1986, with VectorSector? Jeffe holds no punches in this faithful software rendition of the hybrid synth classic as he resurrects nearly every sonic detail, including convincingly reconstructed versions of all 100 original factory presets..."

IMO:
I bet on this like the better emulation from Prophet-VS.

------------
2. Arturia Prophet V emulates both the classic Prophet 5 and the Prophet VS synthesizers in this one.

Not tested by me, but the so-so standart from Arturia that all of us already know...

------------
3. Steinberg XPhraze: It implements Vector Synthesis. Amazing synth!

I don't know the Reason Malström, but I guess it has a granular synthesis's engine...
Waldof Q doesn't have none official VSTi clone, there is the Terratec Komplexer (it loads Micro-Q patches but doesn't sound the same like a Micro-Q/Q synth - and yep, Komplexer was implemented by Waldorf). Besides that, Waldorf Q/Micro-Q have something like "Wavetable synthesis" (but it doesn't sound like the real wavetable Waldorf Microwave XT). Wavetable and Vector synthesis have the same original root (transitional synthesis - read Sound On Sound link above), but implement the theory using different methods. The same for Wavesequencing like Korg Wavestation/Yamaha SY22 and the Ensoniq Fizmo/ASR-10 (transwave method).
