IbogaCD26 - Set:3

1. Beat Bizarre : Brain Drain Remix
2. Psyless Groove : Colombia Rock
3. Bus : 4 Those About 2 Trance
4. Llopis : Centrafuge (Son Kite Remix)
5. Phony Orphants : Mission
6. Emok : Whats Going On
7. Phony Orphants : Global Wonderground (Llopis Remix)
8. Nasa : Legolam
9. Genetic Spin : Quiet

1. A nice remix of a Beat Bizarre classic starts this cd. With a "Full On" bassline and a nice open soundscape the Brain Drain Remix is a nice slightly dark crossover track. Not quite what I expected to start the cd but a great track for the dance floor.

2.Psyless Groove comes next with the track Colombian Rock. A warm and more trancy vibe comes down the speaker wire. Nice melodies and some hard to hear vocal samples. This is a decent track but it never picks up and goes anywhere IMO.

3.Gus Till drops buy to wake us up with his new track 4 Those About 2 Trance under his moniker Bus. A harder darker track with lots of mechanical noises, swirling sounds and rhythmic layering help to create a dark and moody soundscape. This track is sweet indeed. Glad to see Gus is still rocking the dancers, many a warm smiles when I dropped this.

4.Llopis is back with a tribal remix by one of the best groups in the last few years Son Kite, and let me tell you this track does not disappoint. In a style that would feel right at home on the Coulers album Son Kite shows us once again how talented they can be. Warm, tribal, a bit on the housy side while staying true to a deeper sound. Best track on the CD if you ask me. Very nice work you guys.

5.Phony Orphants are up next with a brand new track called Mission. I was pleased with Phony Orphants LP however I felt it did not quite live up to its potential in some ways. This track is more in line with how I thought the album would sound. A good solid progressive track with a sweet breakdown. Nice synth leads.

6. Emok chimes in with the new track What's Going On. Funky and deep this track MOVED the dancers around the room. Nice progressive groove that ads and builds nicely. I will have to be on the look for Emok in the future. I smell talent here.

7.Phony Orphants are back again with the Llopis Remix of the classic Global Wonderground track. The original track was the highlight of Phony Orphants last album and this remix is a nice re-tooling of the original track. A bit slow to start it builds and builds into a good track.
Something about the bassline just falls flat for me at the start of the track. It builds from there with moody synth lines and rhythmic stabs but it not something I would play out. Still you can feel the talent behind the music.

8.Nasa drops in from space to share Legolam. Nasa is a new name to me but the track is tasty. Busy and full tilt with out being “full on” this progressive stormer is sure to get people moving. Look out for Nasa they may have more tricks up there sleeves.

9.Last comes Genetic Spin with quiet. This is a great track with a FreQ like atmosphere. Dark minimal and progressive. Right at home in any dark progressive set. I love this sound but I wish tracks would progress a bit more. Tell a whole story, move into a place that resolves sonically but tastes are different and a good dj can move the story along. Good solid track.

I just bought this a few days ago and I have not had the time to let all the track grow on me so I may have more to say in the weeks to come but I will say Iboga keeps its high standard intact with Set:3. It’s a solid addition to any collection. Perhaps its not as solid as Playground or Puzzled but any fan of the Iboga sound should pick this up as it will not disappoint. The Son Kite remix was worth the price alone in my little world. Great Job guys!

Nice album, but why release three tracks on it that have been on previous Iboga outings? I don't get it. At least they could've provided some remixes of recent tracks. Track 1 was already released on the Beat Bizarre album 'Lewd', track 3 was featured on the Ectoplasm compilation and track 4 finally was on the 2nd cd of Digital Structures / Iboga cd Cross Link compilation. Minor gripes however, since the rest of the tracks are so good they almost let you forget the 3 previous released tracks. Track 2,5,6,8 are just great stuff and the rest is good too. (Yes, even the previous released tracks). The Beat Bizarre track is so good I could listen it everyday, the Bus track rocks too and finally the Son Kite remix of Llopis - Centrafuge is even better than the fat original. Certainly more funky So, finally I'd give this compilation 8/10 beacuse of the very good new tracks. Could've been an 9/10 with 3 new tracks instead of recycled material though.

Ektoplazm Reviews: Set>3

Iboga's Set>3 is third in a series of compiled singles, rarities, remixes, teasers, and re-issues. Whereas previous releases have mainly dealt with tracks released on vinyl, with few new releases on wax this one concentrates on previewing upcoming albums and signed acts. There are a couple of remastered tunes to be found here, a sampling of 2005 releases, and various other songs that work quite well with each other while crossing over between several moods and styles. Iboga has been on top in 2004 so it's no real surprise that their grab bag assortment of music is still better than many other labels and their concerted efforts.

Beat Bizarre opens the album with a remastered version of the remix of Brain Drain taken from their 2001 debut album Lewd. Surprising for my ears is how heavy this song is, with a fat throbbing underside thoroughly laced with bubbling psychedelic effects. The drive is nearly relentless, while the atmosphere is permeated with non-stop lysergic sounds. It sounds great opening the album here with a blasting track for night-time voyages. I was never a fan of Lewd so I suppose the mastering has really made a difference on this oldie, as it sounds great to my ears.

Iboga's new signing Psyless Groove start to show some maturity with Columbian Rock, a rumbling progressive track that certainly fits well with the label's sound. Easy atmospheres develop a light feeling, delightfully interspersed with sudden seamless leaps and structural shifts. Two years after their debut release, this group is really starting to shine.

Gus Till as Bus provides 4 Those About to Trance for the third entry, previously released on the Ectoplasma compilation. This track is a strange production, full of very clever percussive noises that take on numerous distinct sound forms as clicks, springs, rattles, and other mechanical noises. All the scratching effects whirl around at a frantic pace as the song nears a late climax, offering little in the way of melody. For psytrance based entirely on curious noises this is an interesting product, well worth a listen for minimal fans and those who enjoy nicely produced trippy sounds.

Son Kite's remix to Centrifuge, a song by Llopis, is next... this one is taken from the Digiboga project Crosslinks, a double-CD released some time ago. The combination is as you might expect - huge rolling beats with a tribal techno flavouring, with Son Kite's excellent production standards. Loops are certainly the key here, with all sorts of repetative elements driving the song. Atmospheric morning sounds can be heard over the pumping bass as the song develops. Son Kite are among the most consistent remixers in the scene, and just about every track they touch turns to gold. This one is no different - a solid groove and a positive vibe turn simplicity into something fully engaging.

Phony Orphants preview their upcoming album with Mission, showing a more active side to their production than was heard on their debut Symphony. Acidic electro lines wobble over a fast chunky rhythm laced with numerous spacious atmospheres, in the dramatic style familiar to all fans of progressive. The song is over before 6 minutes have even passed, making it a short and energetic journey. Usually the trend for progressive artists is to go deeper with time, so this is an interesting deviation from the norm.

Emox (Emok from Phony Orphants) goes solo with What's Going On, a deep progressive song in the Danish style. The recipe is great, with rough rhythms and a hint of tribal textures and electro sounds. Crispy melodic hooks twist and turn with grace in the later segments, though the theme remains one of stark pulsating sounds all placed with mathematic precision. A decent finely-tuned song, sure to fit in many sets.

Global Wonderground by Phony Orphants gets the remix treatment from Llopis next. The arrangement doesn't change too much but Llopis coats the song in his new signature style: deep and dirty progressive house sounds. Rough kick drums with a hollow sound, reminiscent of the Delta of years ago, are tamed with smooth bass grooves that rise and wobble with deviant and menacing effect. The remix is something of an overhaul, like replacing the engine in a custom-built automobile. This time the driving currents are moodier with a jagged edge to them, still retaining the spirit of the original while mirroring it into darker territory.

Nasa have resided on the fringe of my progressive perceptions for some time now, creating some of the smooth Danish style of minimal progressive that I sometimes find quite enjoyable. Their contribution to this compilation entitled Legolam shows an entirely new direction for the group - far more energetic and closer to full-on than anything else in their history. Thankfully the hard-hitting bass lines are tempered with sublime sound effects and some excellent percussive loops. Surprise is increased as a few distinct melodies enter, flowing through hypnotic iterations, complimented with tribal flourishes. Overall it's a very heavy song with respect to the traditional Danish psychedelic sound, something I would have expected to have heard from a Z.M.A. compilation and not Iboga. Not that this is a problem however - the sound is really quite excellent! If this is Nasa's new style - intense psychedelic trance with a very polished character - then I hope we hear more of it.

Genetic Spin closes the album with Quiet, another piece of lush psytrance. Much like Nasa, this is a Danish act that has been exploring higher energy states and more synthetic sounds than the often light and dry progressive sounds. Compare and contrast their debut with the recent Backspin and you will see a clear difference... this particular track isn't quite as light as the album. Heavy bass beats roll throughout the song, with dark pulsing sounds arising from the depths at key moments. Sharp sounds in the percussive layers emphasize the groove, and a pleasant sprinkling of chords paint the cerebral landscape.

Overall it's a very solid compilation, without a single weak song in the batch. If you enjoy the Iboga style this is a CD well worth owning. Some re-arrangement of the tracks could have benefitted home listeners - but as a DJ tool this is hardly matched. All the new mastering sounds fantastic, and each song pumps through the speakers like a freight train. I even grew to like some of the previously released material more than I had before, perhaps due to the new context. If you're into a variety of progressive and psychedelic sounds this would be a great compilation to check out. Recommended!

---

Note: it helps that I don't own any of the releases from which previously released material came from, though I do have the Bus track on 12"...

Title: Set>3
Label: Iboga
Format: CD
Released: November 2004

Review:

2004 was a year where Iboga once again released some of the most memorable albums and compilations – most noticeable was FREqs debut on the progressive psytrance-scene, that will probably be remembered for years to come. The 1 month old “Set>3” was their 3rd compilation this year, a compilation featuring 6 new tracks from Danish artists, plus a few previously released tunes.

1. Beat Bizarre – Brain Drain (Remix)
First track is from one of the most important acts on Iboga, the Danish duo Beat Bizarre. “Brain Drain (Remix)” is the original track from their 3 year old debut album “Lewd”; An album that turned out to be one of the most important releases in Ibogas history. I personally prefer the dark sound from “Lewd” over their new album “Pandoras Groove Box”, so this track was a nice flashback – but still I would have preferred a new track instead.

2. Psyless Groove – Colombian Rock
Next up is Psyless Groove - a Danish duo that has been releasing tracks for a few years, but hasn’t really deserved as much attention as they have deserved. “Colombian Rock” is a step up for them, and I’m guessing they learned a thing or two by FREq when he was in Denmark, as their sound on this track is pretty close to his. Very crisp and nicely produced – but also still with a very nice groove to it. Great track.

3. Bus – 4 Those About To Trance
Guss Till is probably one of my top5 all-time favourite producers, especially because of his work in the legendary act Slinky Wizard. “4 Those About To Trance” is a 2 year old track, but still a nice one, with alternative use of metallic percussion that reminds me of the first Hux Flux album - but in a more minimal version. (After hearing this track again I gave “Halluci-Nations” a listen again by the way – and his “North By North West 6” is still as beautiful as 5 years ago – back when TIP.World still released groundbreaking music)

4. Llopis – Centrafuge (Son Kite Remix)
Originally released on Ibogas excellent collaborations-compilation with Digital Structures, Digiboga, Son Kite is back on Iboga with this remix of Llopis’ “Centrafuge”. It’s a trip 2 years back, back to the days where Son Kite weren’t as fluffy, but relied more on kicking tribal grooves. Good remix that was played everywhere a few years ago, but not the best that ever came out of the High-Hat studio.

5. Phony Orphants - Mission
Emok and Jeppes (Nanobeat) project Phony Orphants is another old Iboga-act, and “Mission” is a totally new track from their studio. Compared to their mellower album “Symphony” I generally consider their releases on various compilations more dancefloor oriented, and this is no exception. Very energetic sunshine music.

6. Emok – What’s Going On
Emoks solo-project is up next, and “What’s Going On” is more laidback than the track with Jeppe. Deeper and groovier, but still with massive dancefloor appeal, this track is one of the highlights here with it’s easy recognisable theme. Love it.

7. Phony Orphants – Global Wonderground (Llopis Remix)
I’ve never been a big fan of Llopis, but this remix of “Global Wonderground”, one of my favourites on Phony Orphants album “Symphony” is a real gem. His version is very close to the original, but his added deep house-grooves fit the track perfectly. I will certainly be on the lookout for more tracks by Llopis in the future.

8. NASA - Legolam
NASA is up next with his first track on Iboga, and it’s certainly a lot different from his earlier releases as NASA and with his partner Sylle in Gnome Effect. Their trademark only a few years ago was very minimal music, but “Legolam” is more on the fluffy side, with beautiful soundscapes, full on tempo and generally a very uplifting atmosphere. Reminds me a bit of The Higher Human Form.

9. Genetic Spin - Quiet
Ending the compilation is Genetic Spin with “Quiet”, a track that is in between the style of their 2 albums, the minimal “On/Off” and “Backspin”, which was a mix of progressive and full on. The sound here is more or less as rich and full as on their latest album, but the grooves from the first album is still intact, so it will probably also please those who liked their first album, but didn’t fancy the last – and vice versa. A nice ending to the compilation.

Bottom line:

“Set>3” is another great compilation from Iboga, and most labels should be jealous of their high standard. Because of the 3 previously released tracks it receives a slightly lower grade from me, but the 6 new tracks are of very high quality, and fans of Iboga should not hesitate in picking up this compilation.

Favourites:

2, 5, 6, 7, 8

Verdict:

7/10

Set:3
Iboga Records, 2004

Review Intro: A changes in the weather today probably caused a headaches to me. Now it's afternoon, sun is about to fade soon. My stereo played today mostly lounge and ambient music, but now i'm ready for some energetic music. The 3rd part of "Set" series from a wonderfull label Iboga is in...

01. Beat Bizarre "Brain Drain Rmx"
Heard the song before on their debut album named "Lewd", now its back in 2004 with more mastering works on it. So, the duo start to hit immideatly, powerfull bassline and a crunchy kick. Great hard groove and loads of effects going from speaker to speaker. The whole atmosphere and the percussion works doing the job here.

Rating: 8/10

02. Psyless Groove "Colombian Rock"
New Iboga's act with a great tune. Pure morning sounds followed by phased leads, fading chords, warm synth sounds and smooth kick and bass combination. I loved the fell of it, and will wait for more works by them.

Rating: 9/10

03. Bus "4 Those About To Trance"
Gus Till with an oldie, haven't heard it, but i know which sound to expect. Metallic and hard, i would say kinda robo-groove experience. Lots of noises and metallic effects going around. Minimal but interesting.

Rating: 7/10

04. Llopis "Centrafuge" (Son Kite Remix)
One of my favourite progressive acts with a remix to Llopis track. Smooth, with a tribal rolls and looped acid lines. It really does the job, deep and groovy. Nothing groundbreaking, but yet it's a good experience.

Rating: 8/10

05. Phony Orphants "Mission"
This track differs a bit from what i've heard on their album. Soft kick and lots of synth lines. The track is really shrot but gives a good journey, very pleasing atmosphere. Waiting for their new album to come.

Rating: 8/10

06. Emok "What's Going On"
Here's some solid stuff from Emok. Pure progressive sounds with wide synth sounds and 80's chords. It develops slowly and leads us toward the end with the funky sounds. It's deep.

Rating: 8/10

07. Phony Orphants "Global Wonderground" (Llopis Remix)
A remix to a wonderfull song that can be found on their album. Same structure, but now i feel the Llopis touches - more housy and relaxed. By the end of the track it filled with more more energy. Good but no so special.

Rating: 7/10

08. NASA "Legolam"
One of my favourites on this compilation. Intensive, energetic and a bit hard on some sides of it. Goot percussion, uplifiting melody and some cool synth sounds. Way to go Mikkel, more psychedelia in the progressive area always fun.

Rating: 9/10

09. Genetic Spin "Quiet" The cd ends with Genetic Spin. I'm not a big fun of them, but let's see what hides here. This track also got the psychedelic feel, but with a minimalism. Nice synth cuts coming in and out here, A perfect one to end this compilation.

Rating: 7/10

Review Outro: Well, what can i say, a solid compilation out of Iboga factory. No real surprises here, i would like to see newer material on their compilations. But again it's worth it, it's one of the fantastic "Set" series and for sure will standout on the progressive market with some new groovy tunes.

Cover Art: 7/10

Sound: 9/10

Album Concept: 7/10

Overall Rating: 7/10
