Review:

Somewhat in the shadows of the big northern European labels like Digital Structures, Spiral Trax, Iboga and Plusquam, the French label Sub Machine has achieved to build up quite a reputation in progressive psytrance circles, with releases varying from dark techtrance over minimal and groovy morning-progressive. After a year with 2 album-releases, "Day Time" was released in December 2004, and is the labels 7th CD-release, compiled by two of the label-DJ’s, Natas (Fiction) and Stefan (Fiction, Missing Time).

1. La Baaz - Scrol
First track is by La Baaz, the solo project of the Swiss Patrick Sonderegger of Paste fame. "Scroll" A heavy, quite minimal track with very distinct tribal percussion. The first 3 minutes the track doesn’t seem to go anywhere, but slowly progresses into a fine tune. Nice, groovy opener.

2. Motion - Interference
In my opinion Vincent Tetraktys released one of the most musically interesting progressive releases in 2004 with his self-titled debut-album. The last half of that album was a smooth journey, sometimes quite housey, and the housey style is in focus with his sideproject Motion. "Interference" is one of the first tracks I hear from this project, and it’s definitely a keeper; It has somewhat the same atmosphere as on the last half of the Tetraktys-album, although slightly more on the brighter side, and the build-up is perhaps more linear. The mellow, laidback groove is in focus, and after a few listens the track really grows on you. A highlight.

3. Antix vs. D.Sens - Reflect
The Strom brothers are up next in a collaboration with D.Sens aka Matthieu from Lunaspice. Take the grooves from Antix’ album "Lull" and combine it with the dark atmosphere of Lunaspices "Reflexion", and you get the track "Reflect": A deep, dark tribal track – very haunting and almost melancholic. I just love the atmosphere - and especially the porn-samples.

4. Clutch – Fat Future
Clutch is a relatively unknown act to me, and here he’s featured with the track “Fat Future”. Unfortunately I found the sound to be was a bit shallow and lacking the punch to really make it interesting. To be honest I think it sounds like something released 3-4 years ago, and it doesn’t really progress either, so I definitely found it to be the weakest track here.

5. Fiction – What’s Your Name
Sub Machine DJ’s Natas and Stefan are up next with their project Fiction: "What’s Your Name" is a cheerful tune with a very catchy bouncy groove, but like a few other of the tracks here, it feels like it’s standing still; There’s just too little progress. I’m guessing the bouncy groove will cause a lot of smiles on the dancefloor though.

6. Fusi & Johnson – Stullen Lude
Fusi & Johnson is a new project consisting of 2 big players on the german progressive scene; DJ Fabio and DJ Mapuas Mapusa also known from Auricular. Their "Stullen Lude" is a very serious progressive track, and with its gloomy atmosphere it’s definitely a track for the nighttime and the minimal lovers, but I thought "To Fly" from “Ground Grooves” was a lot better.

7. Phony Orphants - Petanque
"Petanque" is the contribution of one of Ibogas most well-known acts, Phony Orphants, consisting of Jeppe (Nanobeat labelmanager) and Emok (Iboga labelmanager); A typical PO-track with almost progressive house-like grooves, teasing melodies and a very dance-friendly running bassline. Their upcoming album on Iboga is very high on my wishlist!

8. Side-A - Subliminal
Last track is by Side-A, a new French act, and a very active member on Isratrance. His first release was with Motion on the “Ground Grooves” compilation from Tatsu, but this is the first track he’s released on his own – and it’s actually pretty good. Perhaps not with as well-polished production as some of the other tracks here, but a very uplifting tune with lots of ideas and effects. Nice debut.

Bottom line:

"Day Time" is one of the better new progressive compilations on the market, but unfortunately it doesn’t quite reach the same level as the two latest releases from Sub Machine; the albums from Lunaspice and Tetraktys. The highlights on the compilation are really good, but there are certainly also a few fillers. That being said, “Day Time” is a good mix of house and trance-oriented progressive music - both uplifting and gloomy - but I would rather recommend the latest compilations from labels like Iboga, Plastik Park and the interesting new player on the scene, Tribal Vision Records.

Favourites:

1, 2 (!!), 3, 7(!!), 8

Verdict:

7/10 – good, but not a must-have.

it arrived recently here...

I liked some tracks (motion, phony orphants, side a....)

but others suffer from the ´stand still syndrome´, and you dont see much changes in the tracks, even if they seem good (like fiction track, for example.. seems really good from the start, but not much change afterwards.. or even the antix and dsens one...)...

my opinion of course =)

it was worth the buy, but I expected more...
