I use both and i say go for whatever you like. Qualitywise they're almost the same imo. So i'd get the dell one because it's a bit cheaper.
Make sure though you don't get one with a glossy screen (like the xps or the inspiron series). They make my eyes suffer after a while and they're practicaly impossible to be used outside in daylight. If the one you're reffering to though is a "vostro" then go for it - this has a mate screen.
Cheers!

yeah , dell has also excellent support, if you can give those 150 usd for expanding your guarantee to three years or next business day support (its called smthng like that) and be cool, sony sucks when it comes to support(maybe its the worst company for that)
if for instance theres a malfunction, a guy comes next day and repair it,its very placatory
specs are almost the same in this range of money so go for the dell & leave the trendy vaio outside

Dell is always hit or miss. I've had mine for over 4 years without any problems, some people have had theirs for less with a lot more problems because Dell does use cheaper parts (hence why they cost less). If it's in your budget you should look into getting an HP. I just got one with a 64 bit system, duo core, 4 GB ram, etc for only $750 usd at circuit city. Check www.slickdeals.net to compare prices and to find the cheapest one.
