Glowing Flame's latest release sees the Macedonian label delivering a package of night-time tunage aimed at delivering a 'magical' pinch of mystery. The promotional text accompanying the release tells us of old forests where a well resides which brings forth a magical liquor that gives its drinker a magic touch to create serious tunage. Lets see what a dose of this liquor does to the production skills of the here-featured artists.
01. Yudhisthira - Damru
Yudhisthira consists of two Macedonian producers (O. Zafirovsky, G. Bugarinovsky) who must be working their asses off in the studio. On this particular compilation they manage to crank out two nighttime excursions, with Damru being the first. The atmosphere is vicious, with layer upon layer of sneering, raw synths dancing their way around the ether, weird FX and chopped up vocal stabs sliding in and out of existence, all supported by a bouncy bassline. What the tracks seems to lack is a bit of direction. It plods along nicely, but at the end of the ride you feel there's something missing. The final run can't properly be called a final run, but more a synopsis of what the rest of the track has brought forth, and that's where I felt there was just not enough substance to make this track stand out. Nonetheless it's a decent enough track, and a nice opener for what promises to be an interesting ride.
02. Uruz & Ansuzvs Krussedull - Boom After Boom
The cup is passed on to three Norwegian producers (J. Noras, G. Berg, A.M. Olsen) who waste no time in setting up the foundation for a journey into twisted soundscapes. Some neat variation in basslines propels us further into some of the better nighttime tracks on this compilation. This track isn't about re-inventing the genre, but doing what's done before right. There's enough tricks and twists to keep it interesting, the synthwork is driving and haunting at times, without going over the top for the sake of getting the hardest synth imaginable in there. It's all quite subtle, and it plain and simple works. Solid track.
03. Imaginary Sight - Outhere
We're back in Macedonia with the duo M. Daravelski and B. Lazovsky who make up Imaginary Insight. For those who are into night-time psychedelia this name should be a welcome sight on any tracklist. The track opens with a sort of faded monk chant. Don't worry, it's not the 'look how shanti my new track is' kind of sample, and it greatly helps build atmosphere. And that's the keyword in this track. The track is rather straightforward, with lots of repressed potential hiding behind the plethora of little squeeks and synthlines just itching to be discovered. Halfway through the track there's a bit of a letdown with some sort of distorted cello entering the equation which seems a bit out of place, but luckily the track picks up the quality again after that, with truly sick, haunting, sweeping synthlines kicking us into the realms of psychedelic aural pleasures. Seriously a brilliant final run. Lovely track!
04. Trold - Eye of the World
And back to Norway again. S.V. Skjoldal & B. Ophein give us this slice of in-your-face, pounding, neighbour-unfriendly, stomping goodness. Some sort of distorted accordion synth will be your guide along the path to the eye of the world, and it has all the right ingredients to show you that the eye of the world is a place of controlled mass-hysteria. This is what it's all about. The track keeps evolving into more complex synthlines, variations on what could loosely be called melodies, and a drive that could make a cripple walk again. With the track closing with the words: "many people become aware of a quite different world" you can't help but concur. This track is hands down a stomper in its own class, and you'll be kicking, screaming and diggin in extacy while it takes you to places you could not imagine. Gem!
05. Imaginary Insight - Great Cosmos
The second installment of Imaginary Insight on this compilation is a restrained affair, which seems to tend more to the morning side of things without losing that darker undercurrent. It has some nice ideas and some of the synthwork is beautifully done, but it seems out of place after the maximum damage Trold has just inflicted. Where the track delivers on ideas, it lacks in substance. I'd love to know what a remix by for example Electrypnose would do to this track. But that not being the case here, I feel this is a bit of a letdown on this compilation.
06. Glowing Flame - Peyote
And this is where the true quality of the compilation is exhibited. This track by label owner Glowing Flame has to be heard to be believed. Probably being the fastest track here, the sheer intensity of the track, driven by strings that sound like a pack of rabid dogs set loose, is mind-boggling. Acid flares around the ether like there's no tomorrow, leaving you panting for more. The middle part of the track sees the atmosphere get a bit more eerie, which will make for the better moments of twilight bliss. And then all brakes are utterly obliterated as the final run just forces itself into your mind, ravaging through your neurons like a bolt of lightning. The energy and force of this track feels like a wall of sound that just hit you in the stomach, and you simply feel like you don't want this rollercoaster ride to stop anytime soon. Utterly brilliant!
07. Braincell - The Experiment
After Glowing Flame's dust has settled, Braincell befalls the difficult task to keep up the quality. What we have here is a track with one of the better build-ups, spacy FX guiding you along a track that is all about layering. Goodness. The middle of the track sees a spoken sample appear, after which the building starts all over again, though in a different direction. The track picks up on intensity and gets edgier and more raw. The final run combines the first half's spacyness with the second half's raw emotions to deliver something that is thoroughly enjoyable. This track isn't the 'I-just-got-kicked-in-the-balls-and-strangely-enough-enjoyed-it' kind of track that Peyote was, but is a bit more refined and is very suitable for both home-listening and trancefloor digging. Good stuff.
08. Yudhisthira - Molk
This is the second installment of Yudhisthira on this compilation. Where the first track seemed to lack a bit of direction, it seems they found it here. The track slowly builds and builds, with twisted synths playfully spinning around, good progression in the percussion department and an overall polished feel. It's hectic without getting too chaotic, has enough twists at the right times to keep it interesting, and will definately find its way to a pair of speakers, pleasing the digging crowds as the ether is filled with its frequencies. Definately a solid track.
09. Rastaliens - Dataline
Rastaliens is a name that should be familiair to anyone remotely interested in psychedelic trance, as their productions consistently keep up a certain quality that is difficult to miss. This particular track has the honor to end the journey for the enhanted well, and does so in style. Ballsy, forcefull psychedelic trance as it's meant to be done. A subtle four-note xylophone-like loop acts as a backbone to a track that sees more psychedelics flowing as the track progresses. Flaring synths take over and the track is well underway to becoming a stand-out. We're in three minutes when things start to get really interesting as the track takes on an almost claustrophobic feel. The track bounces along, sees a saw flirting with some lovely effects, and finally welcomes back the xylophone-like loop to anounce the final run. The final run lacks a bit of punch, but does a good job at keeping the pace going, and steering us to the end of this compilation.
So what we have here is one of the better night-time compilations that has graced my ears in a long while. It's not as dark as a lot of other releases, nor is it as fast paced as a lot of recent productions. It even manages to flirt with some morning sounds here and there, and I think that's where the strength of the compilation resides. It is night-time psychedelia without going over the top, it has drive without the need to crank it up to 150 bpm and it manages to maintain a level of quality that is hard to miss. With two true gems (Trold and Glowing Flame), a lot of stompers and only one letdown, you can't go wrong with this release. It seems the magic liquor is a potent one, and I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a mug or two. This release gets my sincere recommendation, and I'm eagerly awaiting Glowing Flame's next release.

True that. I heard the samples on Saiko. And i dont really ave to say anaything much except for the fact that Glowing Flame is arguably the most underrated label today for no reason. Listen to their previous releases and i havent come across many labels that give you such pure psychedelia!
The sounds that comes from this label are pure magic and takes one into another world itself. Coming back to the album, i cant just wait to grab a copy of this..... Trold as always is just magical. Braincell, Rastaliens are just pure gems. Yudhistira, Imaginary sight are some artists that could define the sound of the future.
This is wat i would call pure acid morning!
Amazng compilation.
All the best guys ... keep em coming!
BOOM!

Ok, normally I seriously don't care about these kind of discussions, but I think this scene has scrutinised every single written word a bit too thoroughly the last period.
Yes, I've called this compilation geared more towards the night-time kind of music. Face it: the music on this compilation is rather hard-hitting (especially when compared to the normal more fluffy kind of music that one would expect when someone descibes a piece of music being morning-oriented). I've also clearly stated that it manages to flirt with morning sounds, and that it definately is psychedelic as hell. I can't believe how a scene that boasts open-mindedness can get caught in these semantics games. It seems after Ocelot started the topic not to call psy 'dark' the whole scene has fallen over every single word that describes the overall feel of a piece of music, just to not label it and take away its artistic freedom.
I've written a review for a compilation. The aim of a review is to describe in words the kind of music a potential buyer can expect when buying that release. Which means describing the feel of the music by using synonyms and generalisations so the reader can sort of relate to what is said by earlier contact with that kind of music. In the end it is nearly impossible to pin down a piece of music by words, hence the use of definitions that put music in a certain genre. Now I'm really carefull in putting a label on a piece of music and just telling people it's just that, and nothing else. In the end the music speaks for itself, and a review can and will never aspire to replace that. It is just a description of what to expect. Nothing more, nothing less. |

thatīs true, only that sometimes generalizing can give different expectations, and when I listen to this for first time when someone tell me thatīs night orinted than i create some expectations or image, thatīs why I think when you listen to some release is just better without an predictible describing, because there are things that are neither night neither morning just there (psychedelic)
