Review:

01 - Nandro - Tales from the Kitchen
Nandro from Sweden delivers his debut track on this compilation. Warm, hypnotic pads start off this spacey daytime progressive track. Nice layers of metallic percussion led by an interesting bassline build into a nice, quirky rhythm that circulates around. A solid track.

02 - Sol Connection - Spiral Tree
From Australia Sol Connection’s track delivers a nice solid kick with growly and creaking pads. Panning melodic riffs and angelic atmospheres lead into a powerful twirling breakdown. The fantastic creaking wood pad sounds like one is sailing the seven seas. Following this is a dirty melody. Excellent debut track with nice progression.

03 - Luna Spice - Moon Missionaries
Luna Spice of Sub Machine Records need no introduction. They have created a pretty but trippy progressive track laced with soothing flute sounds. Typical rhythm from these guys builds up with spiralling pads into dark daytime riffs and trippy spaceyness. A real stomper, that delivers nicely. Great stuff that gently places your feet back on the ground at the end.

04 - Float Tank - ReTox
Float Tank aka Oculus from Australia co-released an album on Floatation records. One of the pair is now producing under the moniker Float Tank with an album planned for release in the near future on the same label. He delivers an up tempo percussive progressive track leading into building acid stabs beefed up with a wobbly bassline. A good track that progresses nicely but I didn’t find it as interesting as his newer material being showcased live in recent times. Look out for this.

05 - Meltdown - Sunset City
Meltdown from Australia’s debut gets to the point quickly with a fast paced warm kick and fast tribal percussion. A darkish melody carries this track along well. Nice samples with a short breakbeat breakdown. A trippy, spiralling melody peaks the track near the end. An enjoyable and interesting debut progressive track.

06 - Sunrunner - Curving Beams of Light
Sunrunner is another Australian with his debut on EPP. He provides an uptempo, layered progressive builder that explodes with joy and of course a powerful, classy melody to keep you smiling. Pretty, tingly pads and a nicely used sample make this a magical track.

07 - Third Drop Reflection - Lucid Dreaming
Third Drop Reflection of Australia has released tracks on EPP in the past. This is a twisted full on sunrise track typical of his solid live sets in recent months. Brimming with psychedelic energy the warm bassline and trippy pads carry you along to a spoken word breakdown. The track sparkles with distorted female tribal singing perfect for the sunrise. Beautiful track.

08 - Hedonix - Don’t mess with Tetris
Hedonix have also released on EPP before with Bobret having compiled the CD for us. These guys provide a very funky and quirky night-time. The track begins in a minimal way but the funky bassline, twisted melody picks it up into a crazy fast paced night track where it all goes pear shaped in a nice way.

09 - Temporary Unknown - Surrounded by Blips
This artist from Sweden has his second release on EPP here. As the track aptly suggests this night time minimal track provides quirky blippy pads that stab out of nowhere. Layers of nice metallic, atmospheric pads and percussion pick it up slightly. Interesting track.

10 - Sensient - Dynafunk
Sensient of Zenon Records has two albums and many compilation tracks under his belt. This track begins downtempo with a funky bass guitar lead. The track kicks in with again a great twisty bassline and swirling liquid pads that pan across nicely in a hypnotic manner. In the last third of the track more percussion is added to the track and a dark distorted melody to finish it off. Nice minimal track

EPP have provided an interesting and unique compilation of established and promising up and coming producers. Solid psychedelic tracks by all with some great highlights of progressive, minimal and morning trance. A very good CD for those looking for something slightly different to the norm in these styles.

The Martin Fitzgerald File
Electric Power Pole (Australia)

I met the people behind this label at Sonica in Italy this summer, and they’re bloody nice people. And funny. And on the strength of this compilation they also have fucking good taste in music, and a good sense of what makes a compilation stand out from the crowd.

Nandro’s Tales From The Kitchen is a wonderful way to kick things off, a smooth and atmospheric progressive track that builds into a wonderfully ticklish main run, completely laid back and with no sounds seeming forced. Sol Connection’s Spiral Tree is another goodun, picking up from the groove left by Nandro and taking it a shade deeper, with tecchy growls peppered over a laconic, Sensient-y backbone. The midsection sees it pick up a wonderfully booming sound, which gives the track focus and energy taking it onwards.

LunaSpice’s Moon Missionaries has a very nice feel to it. It sort of reminds me of how Chi-AD might sound if still recording now, or Human Blue at his peak. It’s lucid, dreamy and flowing and all the sounds are perfectly balanced out against one another, and they conspire to create this lazy, engaging groove. Float Tank pulls out a corker with ReTox, funky as hell and with a touch of menace to keep things spicy, not to mention a simple, effective, understated 303 to pull it all along. Meltdown’s Sunset City is a strange beast. It’s a percussive, prog/fullon crossover job with a very airy, spacious feel to it. Staggeringly good.

Sunrunner’s Curving Beams Of Light is possibly the first *Goa* track I’ve heard come out in years. It’s got that energy folks, those tight escalating melodies and little sonic hugs that make that particular style of it what it is. Rare. Third Drop Reflection’s Lucid Dreaming also seems to have the Goan magic to it, there’s plenty of wobble and twist going on here.

Hedonix’s Don’t Mess With Tetris uses the melody from insomniacs’ favourite gameboy diversion, but it only uses it a little bit. It’s still enough to get stuck in your head though. Otherwise, it’s a gloriously twisted, scratchy bit of aussie trance, the sort you might expect tucked away on one of Digital Psionics’ older, madder compilations, and the final run sounds deliciously like two R2D2 units fellating each other on the top deck of a bus. Temporary Unknown’s Surrounded By Blips does more or less exactly what it says on the tin. It’s sparse, lumpy and moody, and it’s not entirely pleased with you. After various drops and stops and shunts it picks up into a mechano-stomp that’s a little like the deep tecchy German stuff that was about a few years back. Inventive stuff.

Finally Sensient comes in with Dunafunk, which is an utter, utter gem. Much more funky and disco-friendly than I would ever have expected from this guy, but still with those trademark sounds and looping that’s borderline genius. Whew.

All in all, The Martin Fitzgerald File is a real experience to listen to. And I mean that. The quality of music here is first class right the way through, the amount of variation is almost unheard of these days, and the fact that is does all this without falling into one single cliché makes me love it that little bit more.

Some of this compilation are far from being music but just some predictable and sometimes complex production tricks. The level of production isn't enough for 2005 or minimal doesn't progress?

I give it 5 and only for intresting name and somehow intresting from experimental point of view Sensient's beats.

Lunaspice and Third Drop Reflection tracks are wonderful, not speaking about Sensient who always brings us amazing stuff.           [ cuBe ] :: cubeg.org •

The initial impression indicates the quality is all over the place on this one... some great, some... not so great perhaps. I shall have to listen deeper and do a review to sort out my exact feelings on this.

Tracks 1,2,3 and 10 are superb in my opinion, and the rest is not bad. Sometimes average, sometimes pretty good. Just have a listen to some samples and decide. I think it's a pretty good compilation and the great tracks justify a buy in my opinion.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment.
