The review:
A surprise for me this time, to be reviewing this among releases that usually focus on the full on realm. Zenon Records already was pretty minimal, but now they’ve surely taken the road of minimal techno with this release, and they sound all the better for it. From the dry beats of Moses to the more dark territory of Sensient and the funkier feelings that One Tasty Morsel manages to conjure up, this is a great ride all the way through. New artists are blended with already known ones here. One might be lead to believe that artists like Motive, Grouch, Sourone, Circuit Bent, Muggi Dane and Tristan Boyle would pale between names like Sensient, Krumelur or Moses. This is definitely not the case here though. For example, Motive rams the stuff home with Dusty Nostrils (T5, a track that sounds a lot like the “Minilogue” album from Son Kite) and from there it’s on to other minimal techno gems all the way through to the end. Now, since I like minimal techno a lot, I might be a little biased towards this, but so be it. This is one compilation (and label for that matter) that deserve praise for always releasing what they believe in. And it has to be said: this IS psychedelic and actually comes closer to ‘trance’ than most stuff these days. Full on has become increasingly party material, but this stuff really manages to hit home with the hypnotics. Now don’t get me wrong, I like a good full on CD and simply love progressive and more commercial trance as well. But to me, hypnosis, a sense of losing oneself, has always been the true meaning of trance. And that’s where these tracks really manage to reach. Some are more funky, some are more dry minimal, some darker, but they all have the hypnosis element in them. Some are even funny (Mega Condensor, T6, springs to mind with the great samples). So kudos to Sensient for compiling this compilation and finding these tracks for us. To top it all, even though these tracks are all minimal, they’re really different from each other. Further praise to the mastering (by SunControlSpecies) and to the great artwork.
Recommendation: It must be obvious by now that this one comes with two thumbs up from me. I’ve been playing this for few days now, but I must say it’s my favourite compilation from Zenon to date, and even one of the favourites of the last couple of months. Anyway, if you’re even remotely interested in minimal techno or are looking for a welcome change, this is the thing to get. It deserves to sell in droves!

excellent cd, very nice fusion of minimal techno and psy trance. i can hear a strong autist rec/boris brejcha influence here and i like it!
standout tracks for me are:
Moses- Blocks
One Tasty Morsel- Two More Bones
Grouch- Mega Condensor
Circuit Bent- Ambiently Speaking
usually its always been sensient for me in zenon releases, but this one dosent really reaches earlier once, i kinda miss his smashing 16bass and the funkiness.
its might be also just be course there are tracks like circuit bent which are so fresh, full of sweet ideas and lovely sounds! i wanna hear more of that!
keep it coming

Cheers for the kind words guys - stoked you enjoyed the track.
Not sure I am worthy of comparisons with Son Kite/ Minilogue (they are the kings) but i thankyou SOOOO much! I am blown away by this.
Thanks again.

I heard that this is some kind of experimental release, is it true? And will we be able to listen the old Zenon style sometimes somewhere again (releases/parties n festivals)? Or that style is already dead?

Yes Small Talk is a bit different (lower bpm/more minimal) but dont worry, there are many releases from Zenon to come this year in the deep, organic, technical, psychadelic style it is known for.
New albums from Autonomech, Sensient, Tetrameth, Vacuum Stalkers + some new talents...

I actually didn't like this comp as much as I hoped I would. To be honest, I love Krumleur, but that particular track almost put me to sleep, literally. I think I might be a fan of the older stuff Zenon has done a bit more. The Sensient and the One Tasty Morsel tracks were pretty decent, but overall I just couldn't really get into this comp that much. I appreciate that this label is delving into the territory and there's some I definitely like, just this comp really emphasized some of the things I didn't like so much about the particular style.

i agree
fresh sounds r more then welcome n the zenon prespective for minimal psytrance oriented tech is gr8, however this compilation is a bit overdirected. for me grouch is 1 of the best acts in the genre and "mayan toolkit" was a perfect example for the crossover, but now its just too much i guess. the sexiness of the zenon bit is missing (n it doesnt matter what kind of sound they produce).
anyway in overall its 1 of the best attempts to putt some psy environment around the minimal sounds iv heard lately n thumbs up for the experimental spirit!!
