Format : CD and Digital
Release date : sept 08

Track list
01 Desert Dwellers – Stratosphere (Ecliptic remix)
02 Sun Control Species – Snake shake
03 Nyquist – Tilt
04 Ace Ventura - The Spark
05 C-Jay – Miko (Behind Blue Eyes remix)
06 Saikopod – Electroid Sheep
07 FM Radio Gods – Musak Attack
08 Desert Dwellers – A Little Spice
09 Erphun – Double Shift
10 Perfect Stranger – Clear Vision 07 (Fiord Remix)

With the end of summer and the festival season in Europe, it’s time for a new Set from Iboga, compiled, this time, by the L.A.-based DJ, Trance pioneer and etablished published producer Treavor from the Moontribe collective. Let’s take a look at what he has harvested for us.

1. Desert dwellers – Stratosphere (Ecliptic rmx)
Ecliptic, one of the hot names from the Mexican Trance Mafia, lays down a groovy, bumping foundation in his psyish rmx: the arpeggiated lead has been chopped until the synth arrangements reach a nice crescendo in the break, accompanied by a whole lot of zooming pads. Classic recipies are employed to produce a well-crafted track, although nothing groundbreaking happens in there.

2. Sun Control Species - Snake shake
This smoothie blends a nice trancey bassline delivering an effective galloping momentum with a more techy-electro serpentine lead that wiggles up and down the scale. The rare soaring pads combined with a fair amount of quirky infected (mushroomesque) sounds clearly situate this track in a psy-prog register that discreetly incorporates the rattles you hear these days in Techno. Nice attempt at integrating genres even though I have a preference for the Rush Hour track digitally released in August.

3. Nyquist – tilt (Nikko rmx)
Aran Gallagher and Ben Hartley, the experienced Aussie duo behind the Nyquist Moniker, deliver their trademark progressive trance/house crossover showcasing a wide array of tried and true tricks from their sonic arsenal : a transposed compelling bassline, gasping vocal snippets, forceful lead etc. This is neither their most powerful nor most original output, as their last 4 tracks released on Iboga seem to slightly overshadow this new installment, and as you won’t find the same density as in Chapster or Delctribe, for example. But don’t get me wrong, this is still a reliable dancefloor tool from top-notch producers.

4. Ace Ventura : Spark
Judging by the success of his tracks among the psy-prog djs and his undeniable talent to fire up dancefloors worldwide when playing live or dj sets, Ace Ventura has raised himself to the much sought after rank of most popular act in the scene. This new delivery will feed the fans with a reliable dj tool (rolling and switching bassline, echoing pads, climactic break etc.) and fresh material, although, set beside the rest of his work, nothing really new happens here to “spark” real enthusiasm.

5. C-Jay : Miko (Behind Blue Eyes rmx)
BBE gives a more trancey rendition of C-Jay’s original score : whirling transposed atmospheric loops and the uplifting atmosphere assume a more pronounced position. The melodic side is not as mysterious as in his previous installment (Set 8), and if the track lacks a sharper edge, it is nevertheless hypnotic to the core.

6. Saikopod - Electroid Sheep
Saiko Pod’s return will definitely be hailed by fans nostalgic for the not so distant Spiral Trax years. The sound from the now solo project of Ian Ion is indebted to the immense legacy of the ‘wombat’ stomping style of NDSA and the heavy funk of Absolut while adding a little more excentricity in the use of a sliced up, filtered voice sample. That should give you an idea of how effective this dancefloor magnet is.

7. FM Radio Gods - Musak Attack
FM Radio Gods, the dynamic Electro trio from Montreal returns on an Iboga compilation after their nice rmx of Antix published earlier in February. They dish up another electro transposed bass that incorporates vocal snippets and teched up, shuffled dripplets that hook into today’s trends and, once again, deliver their compelling cold groove, immersed in sepia harmonies. Those wishing to have their their Electro upgraded will be satisfied.

8. Desert Dwellers - Little Spice
This act is the musical project of the disc whirling dervish behind the compilation. A deep sounding reverberated bassline over which soar delayed and transposed leads comprises the basics of this track. The eerie harmonies do sound sweet, but not much happens to trigger a sustained interest.

9. Erphun - Double Shift
Erphun is the project of Ali Zaree from L.A. His track is constructed on a long looped, build up to a crescendo which gradually incorporates all the elements. The climax sounds like a psychedelic jam session à la Velvet Underground. For those who like their Techno painted black, without nuances. Not my cup of tea even though it’s got the support of big time DJs.

9. Perfect Stranger : Clear Vision 07 (Fiord rmx)
The rmx signed by Kiwi fames Hayden & Barton Strom gives the seminal piece signed by Perfect Stranger an even deeper, darker edge. The lacerated Brad Pitt voice sample from “7 years in Tibet” gives you the creeps and the exquisite layers of sounds and construction all conspire to torture the brain. Although setting its sights on the mental dimension, the stomping techno beats make it a powerful black sabbath that has already sent up heaps of dust this summer at the Boom festival and that will doubtlessly make more casualties on dancefloors in the months to come. The best Fiord rmx to date, which makes you salivate for more. Not to be missed.

Bottom line:
The strong asset of this compilation is definitely its variety as it covers the whole spectrum of today’s progressive from Psy-prog to Techno via Electro House and more Prog-house tunes. Within this range, I would pick out the Fiord rmx as my absolute favourite; Saiko Pod and Nyquist would come next.

Enjoying some tracks here, specially Sun Control Species – Snake Shake, Ace Ventura - The Spark and Perfect Stranger – Clear Vision 07 (Fiord rmx).

An interesting fact is that the Ace Ventura track has 136 bpms and the second track with the most bpm has 130...
