1.Kerlivin & Baba yaga - Vortexmus

Both these artists from the Parvati records roster have delivered this track, Vortexmus, that can be easily categorized in the typical Parvati record style - groovy forest psytrance, except that it’s ‘harder’ and phatter than usual. Great production has always been the cracker in Baba Yaga tracks, and this gem holds up to that standard. Beautifully layered sounds, great sticky acid leads and distorted atmospheric sounds, and not to forget, the wobbly galloping kick and bass give this track it’s character. Super track for the dancefloor, it’s sure to get everyone bouncing and grooving. I must say, for track 1, it sure is a banger!
Groove – 8/10
Story – 7/10
Production – 9/10

2. Quip Tone Beatz – Lope in the Loop

Hard kick and bass that strikes you right in the chest! This track starts off with this weird lead, that i feel is rather annoying. But quickly, it just jumps into this chopped lead that follows the bassline and give that ‘Grooviness’. Changing patterns, leads, percussive elements and atmospheres follow , thus making this track a great psychedelic storyteller. A change in groove at mid-track changes the character of the track completely, gives it that punch – bOOm! Great atmospheres, twisty subdued leads, continuously running atmospheres make this track very psychedelic and atmospheric.
Nice track for a twisted nighttime, and production is not bad at all for a newcomer!
Groove – 7/10
Story – 8.5/10
Production – 8/10

3. Nolm – Panic & paranoia

This track is a Monster! Thunderous kick and rolling bassline remind me of Encep’s groove. High frequencies have been cut off from percussive elements, giving this track a very Tribal feel. Twisted leads, falling all over the audio spectrum give this track a twisted, psychedelic character. Minimal but perfect use of sounds – few uplifters, percussive elements, downlifters and other fillers. But whatever’s in there, fits just perfectly. The kick and bass continue to be the icing on the cake all throughout the track. Great story in there, so very psychedelic and groovy!
On the downside, mix could have been better. In some places snare and other percussive elements are drowned!
Groove – 8/10
Story – 8.5/10
Production – 8/10

4. xaBBu – Tiny thing

Another dancefloor monster this track ! Newcomer xaBBu has surprised many with this release! As the percussive elements begin and the track begins to build up, it reminds me a lot of Hybrid Synthesis by Atriohm, at least till the second minute. Various leads following each other, with dark atmospheres running in the background – very nice style. Great progression in this track, builds up to something very powerful and more and more psychedelic with the progression. Leads, atmospheres, groove, all very psychedelic and dancefloor-ish! After every break, this track takes on new dimensions altogether, which is sure to send the listener into a dance frenzy!
Just one thing I did not like in the track, at the introduction on minute 5, a strange lead takes control, which does not fit very well with what happened earlier, ruined the flow for me . That would be the time when I mix into the next track!
Groove – 8/10
Story – 8.5
Production – 7.5

5. Claw – Face your fears

Discovalley records artist on a Parvati and Phreex compilation? That’s what I thought when I saw this name on the tracklist. I thought, maybe this track has a style more suited to this type of psytrance – but after listening to this track I think it’s a misfit! I didn’t expect a track of this style on this compilation, and personally, I don’t like this style too.
Anyway, reviewing this track , the groove is Hard and great for twilight. I can imagine people stomping and storming up the dust! Very psychedelic too, layered atmospheres, leads, distorted sounds that are very acid-friendly – great track for Discovalley style lovers I I think. You know what I’m talking bout – those glitchy leads, that distortion, that particular Kick sound, et all! And yes, towards climax, this particular lead fits so well with the groove, giving the track character and making me grin!
But of course, great production by Claw. It would be really disappointing if that point wasn’t met. After all, it’s Claw!
Groove – 8/10
Story – 9/10
Production – 9/10

6. Farebi Jalebi & Darkshire – Signs and Wonders

Starts off with this super psychedelic sound that sounds like the cracking of bamboo tree stalks! This follows that typical Farebi jalebi LFO’d fat-ass lead (I’m so sure it’s a Nord), ‘windy’ atmosphere, a small buildup and then BAM! That orgasmic kick and bass kicks in and and the grins come on! I expected a bomber and Farebi/Darkshire have gone beyond my expectations with this monster. Leads and atmospheres and so well synthesized, especially the leads. Lots of delay here and there give it that atmospheric feel. Sounds fit very well with the groove, are all chopped perfectly and make this track great for morning-time dancefloor!
Style is great – More of shifting form one zone to another, rather than progressing from low to high. Of course, progression does come on towards the end, and that too so beautifully. Climax is purely orgasmic. Those chopped, psychedelic leads are just too sticky. They hit me right in the ‘sweet spot’ , so to say, and for every moment of the climax part of the track, I feel I’m in that amazing “Zone” !
Yet another banger from the Farebi bandwagon, right after Carnival Tradition which just tore me apart! I’m sure this guy is going to deliver some amazing music for years to come!
Groove – 9/10
Story – 9/10
Production – 9/10

7. Backgammon – Gangajamana

The name is inspired from a joint made by a mixing hashish and marijuana. Beautiful groove – very Aarhus style – like track 1 Vortexmus. I immediately notice the tightness in production. Great synthesis, great sounds, great layering. Sounds more of Digitalien than Gu, in the beginning few mins of the track at least. Heavy kick and bassline give it that earth shattering feel . Lots n lots of sounds layered and mixed very well. This track starts with a bang and climbs even higher. Great for morning-time dancefloor. Pure parvati records dancefloor blaster. Trippy leads mid track do the trick for me, making me grin and itch to shake a leg. Wobbly bassline with shifting keys throughout the track add to the grooviness, although I feel that even a rolling bassline would fit perfectly in this track. As the track progresses, it just gets more and more groovy and more and more suited for that peak moment on the trip! The Climax bit, 7th min onwards, reminds me of Gu’s style, delayed leads overlapping each other, creating atmosphere and pure psychedelia. Leads are really really trippy and psychedelic. Great production too on this track. Really hope to hear more from this collab project!
Way to go Japanese forest psytrance artists!
Groove – 9.5/10
Story – 9/10
Production – 9.5/10

8. Ectogasmics – Monkeys

After a few tracks, the galloping bassline is back. But before you know it, it starts rolling again. This track, like the one by Claw, I feel, doesn’t fit In this VA. It’s a different style altogether. I felt the same when Ectogasmics released on Parvatrip 1. It’s harder, with long release hats, and that tribal element that’s signature of Parvati record music just doesn’t exist. Nevertheless, it’s a great track for the nighttime – it’s hard, got very well synthesized leads, many many heavy , shrieky sounds layered well. No doubt, it’s very psychedelic and very good for the dancefloor. Powerful track indeed. Great use of breaks – I think this is the best track in the whole VA where breaks have been used intelligently. Usually, using breaks properly is very difficult.
Sounds very Flipknot, especially the climax bit, I actually thought this was the Flipknot track until I saw the tracklist!
Groove – 8/10
Story – 8.5
Production – 8.5

9. Flipknot – Toke the smoke

Starts off in an eerie fashion with atmospheric sounds flying through the stereo field, which sets the mood for the track – deep and creepy. Leads start pouring in , and the ‘forest talk’ begins. Then comes the percussion buildup, track gets more groovy, more sounds are thrown in, psychedelia begins. Gets very groovy as it moves forward, and I can feel the Flipknot touch come 3.15 into the track. Good track none the less, I’d say I had expected much more from this premier psytrance artist. To me, this track sounds like an amateur psytrance track, whereas I expected it to be much more finer – on the lines of Jahbo, Dronebixie and alike. The progression and flow is not extraordinary. It’s hardly experimental. And when these factors aren’t met, I’d say, the ‘psychedelic’ factor ceases to take control.
Much more expected from Flipknot.
Groove – 6.5/10
Story – 7/10
Production – 7.5/10

10. Koala – Secret river

As the bouncy bassline starts, immediately you know where this track is headed. But when the sounds, percussion, leads and atmospheres kick in, the dryness of the sounds causedisappointment. Great ideas by Koala, but production fails to impress. Better use of eqs, reverbs and delays would have helped make this track and them sounds much more enjoyable. Nevertheless, a minute and a half into this track and it starts to remind me of typical hokus pokus style (other than the not so deep bass of course) – many sounds weaved together beautifully to create the perfect jungle story; it also sounds a bit like Papiyan. Very nice synthesis in this track, great use of effects – excessive, yes, but doing good to the track and not spoiling it.
All in all a great track for the lysergic dancefloor!
Groove – 8.5/10
Story – 8.5/10
Production – 7/10

Despite there being few tracks that I did not like, this VA quenches my thirst for chest-kicking, head-swirling psychedelia. Favourite tracks are Vortexmus, Panic & Paranoia, Tiny thing, Signs & wonders and Gangajamna. Very impressed by xaBBu and Backgammon. Farebi and Darkshire delivered a banger as well. Vortexmus is named aptly! Perfect CD for the collector’s rack! I’m so glad I got my copy
