BEHIND BLUE EYES

Label heads Banel and Emok has yet again collected a bunch of excellent tracks...

...from some of the in house artists and good connections around the globe.

The selection includes Greek duo '9 West' and Swedish 'Gaudium', who are two new signings, and both are preparing albums to new sub label 'Prestige Music' and Iboga respectively.Antix is also preparing a new album for 2007 and with the track 'Blew', we get a teaser from it.

Fiord is one of the key players on the new Iboga sublabel 'Prestige Music' and the track 'Still' is featured here on 'Nuance'.Besides this we have interesting contributions from Grant collins (Excession), well known in the old days as'Darshan', released on Flying Rhino, and the duo 'Zero Divide' from USA.

Also to be found is new music from Sunseek and behind Blue Eyes. Perfect Stranger has done a marvellous remix of the already classic ace ventura tune, 'Rise'
------------------

So the promotional blurb goes. I'm a little suprised not to have seen a review of the latest Iboga comp as one of the leading labels in proggy trance i would have thought it'd generate more interest since it's november release date. I feel this may have something to do with it's slight departure from previous v.a. releases from iboga
one reason to do a review myself and hear others opinions. Anyway more of that in a bit, first a rundown on the tracks from purely a music listeners perspective.

Track 1 ; An electro-y type track, deep slow melodic bass with a reasonably long and early breakdown. Some may consider this boring as there's not much too it but it's a deep track that carries itself.

Track 2 ; There's no doubting this is an Antix track and after TCD the new albumn is really highly anticipated. Great track,

Track 3 ; Nice tribal feel to this number, slightly haunting. Contains an almost generic 'take the blue pill or take the red pill' sample from matrix 1.

Track 4 ; This tune is very dark. Follows just a small part of the hibernation release original for much of the track, there is however a monster break which really makes this, quite intense...

Track 5 ; Quite a commercial sound for Iboga, sort of standard beat bass and melody affair with higher bpm to suit, although i reckon stands out as a good track

Track 6 ; Less bpm here but again fairly standard, generic sound but again good quality.

Track 7 ; Yet again, melodic, almost eurotrance, and not outstanding from other trance out there, but it is better then most, a nice breakbeaty break.

Track 8 ; Here is more what i think is traditional iboga, slower paced, far more quirky sounds and composition.

Track 9 ; Deeper again, have to say i haven't really been able to get into the B.B.Y sound so easy but this no. i like, base line chuggs along nicely with a nice element of dark trippy noises laid over it, kinda feels like an old reefer decree track.

This feels like a departure from previous ablumns especially say playground and puzzled where this has a more commercial line too it. It is However of great quality and i think you could spend alot of time searching other albumns to get a standard such as this. This more melodic style is always something
i personally have preferred...when done well, when it's too easy not to do so.

Fave tracks 2,4,5,7,9

Allround 8.5/10          SNAFU..

This is a good compilation.

Can anyone recommend any compilations that are similar to Playground? I can't seem to find much.

Haven't listened to the whole album, but the first track is really sweet, specially for home listening.

Yep, great stuff. For now I like tracks 3,7,8 the most. I'm not so fond of track 1, but even that one isn't bad. I think this is a lot better than the 'Diversity' release on sublabel Prestige, which had too much 'electro' going on for my taste.

Indeed, it is a great compilation from the best proggy label.
Most of the track are excellent and colorful but my big favorite here is track number six - Nicola was remixed a chilly tune by Gaudium and took it to new zones with tons of creativity, simply amazing !

Progressive minds, get it fast...my advice.
