to sum it up: very fresh release that gives another dimention to updated trance music. alot of flashbacks to the past, but not in a kitch way... its done in a wise and intelligent way. and driving the sound to this "old-new" direction is more then legitimate imo.

To be honest I wasn't that thrilled with this release.

For me the highlights where Son Kite "Sunset Street" and Triple-X "Snowbound". S-Range "On A Mission" was ok. Following the well known S-Range style, but not nearly as good as the highlights from "Space".

Acan "Partygirl" had some nice elements, but overall I didn't like it, and the rest of the tracks where definatly not my style.

I was really disappointed with the remix of Ticon "Waiting For The Knights" - the intro was ok, but overall it was totally without flow. And sorry to Freeland, but "Freeland" is probably one of the worst tracks I've heard this year. That "This is my dreamland..." sample, running from start to finish, is extremely annoying.

Overall:
5/10 - a few fine tracks though          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

V/A - Knee Deep - The Sound of Suntribe

Acan - Partygirl
S>Range - On a Mission
Ticon - Waiting for the Knights (Acan Remix)
Triple X - Snowbound
Son Kite - Sunset Street
Oliver Prime - Da Korah
Oblivion - Ready to Emerge (Neuron Remix)
Freeland - Freeland

Acan opens up the first compilation on his own label with a tune of his own: Partygirl. Some kind of sputtering bass greets the listener in the introduction, a melodic tone with an eastern influence is heard, and then a sample kicks off the song: "cravings are the root of unhappiness". What develops is a very trancey progressive sound flavoured with oriental chords spread out over a pulsating beat. A good use of chopped vocals in the breakdown herald the return of the groove, which brings the song back to a liquid space appropriate for an outdoor festival. Tribal textures sneak in from time to time, and the arrangement is quite ably manifested as a smooth progression of sounds. A decent offering, but not outstanding.

S>Range's nine minute long epic On a Mission is the most redeeming feature of this release. Available nowhere else, the Swedish maestro takes the listener on an upbeat journey through distinct melodic soundscapes with a mixture of old and new influences. The beat is going from the very first second, and the great rhythms slowly develop with mathematic precision as floating sounds tickle the synapses. Chords swish lightly back and forth, giving small hints of big leads to come. Close to the 2 minute mark the throbbing bass line drops and the song really starts to take off. This is a long climb however, spiced with numerous delightful diversions, and plenty of big grooves with prominent high-hats and plenty of foreshadowing. The first break after three minutes of solid pounding show a beautiful morning atmosphere with light chords swirling over a beat that has suddenly gone tribal. With the return of that fat bass hit the song takes off again with effects curling all over, driving forward with positive energy. Another break in the bass line lets the groove shake around with a guitar chord striking intermittently. This section is fabulous on the dancefloor! Now we're in the final two minutes and all the excellent elements come together one last time for a lingering climax. The song concludes by easing out of the groove with more of those pleasant atmospheric noises, and ends as the last beat drops. One of my all-time favourites from S>Range - a positive dancefloor anthem that will suit many contexts.

Acan's remix to Ticon's excellent Waiting for the Knights is a decent enough effort that doesn't differ very much from the excellent original. The sound has undergone a slight shift towards something more liquid and less chunky, with a slightly deeper hit on the kick at some moments. Unfortunatly it is not quite as engaging - it seems to lack the same kind of drive and energy that made Ticon's version so enjoyable. It is still a decent piece of music but when there's one that is so clearly better I never get around to playing the imitator.

Triple X is a side project of the prodigious Tim Healey, working alongside Richard Kegg (Purple). Snowbound, also released on a 12" sampler, is a funky-chunky groover cluttered with smashing percussion and dancefloor-friendly builds. The house influence is very clear on this one, though the sound remains marginally tranced out with sweeping atmospheres and a sparse array of small melodic hooks. The main feature of the song is a big noisy breakdown that lets tortured and distorted synth stabs merge curiously with hints of sweet orchestral sounds in a huge rush to the return, which drops back in at the peak of doubled and redoubled beats. The rest is all a predictable reprisal of territory that has already been covered, and the song wraps it up in a typical fashion. Funky house-influenced sounds with a synthetic approach to the production sound, which will appeal to certain listeners.

Son Kite's Sunset Street is available elsewhere but shines on this compilation as one of the highlights. I had never really been into this artist's original work prior to hearing this song on wax, but after that I was hooked. Acquiring it much later on CD is just a bonus for me really, as I've already played this one out many times. The approach is deep, tribal, emminently dance-friendly, with a huge morning lead that really lights up smiles on the dancefloor. The rhythms flow like clockwork, the main melody unfolds like a blooming lotus, and the sample ties it up nicely with a memorable phrase: "people... on this planet... believe that... worth dying for". An amazing tune from Son Kite that is sure to last the test of time - all fans of the morning sound and deep trance should be sure to track it down.

Oliver Prime's Da Korah is the first released song from this new Austrian artist, and it shows a curious fusion of progressive and old school trance sounds. Plenty of rich textured atmospheres creep around with languid self-importance as small melodic hooks with an eastern flavour twirl around the soundscape. The beats are fairly light and hypnotic, seldom rushing to break out of the pattern, providing a stable foundation for the simple story to bloom. This doesn't really sound like 12 Moons, but I'd say it's a similar approach to trance - a pure arrangement of simple sounds that fall into strict trance-inducing patterns. California Sunshine came to mind when listening, actually... A respectable first offering that sounds fairly good with the quality mastering on this compilation.

Oblivion's Ready to Emerge is a rather dull and directionless effort with shimmering synths that shake all over a rather weak and uninteresting beat layer. The cheezy vocals push this one over the edge, resulting in a bad effort not worth checking out for psytrance fans.

Freeland's self-titled debut closes the compilation with more cheezy vocal-fused garbage. The vacuous vocoded lines repeat ad nauseum, making it difficult to even determine whether there is any kind of decent music beneath it all. Awful.

Thanks to the CD-extra material, this compilation is another CD that won't play on my computer, where I usually listen to albums for review. The bonus data for computer users is a video with Acan's Rubberdub. The songs found here were mastered at High Hat Studios by Son Kite, giving the better material here a really great sound. S>Range provides the real winner on this album, although Sunset Street is no less of a gem. Acan, Oliver Prime, and Triple X drop some decent material, but the rest is virtually unlistenable. In truth it is an inconsistant first effort mainly notable for two excellent songs - the rest isn't particularly essential. I waited until I saw this used on ebay and then pounced on it, and the S>Range track finds its way into a variety of sets, as it sits nicely at the closing end of a progressive set, somewhere in the midst of a full-on journey, or during the morning. If a few of the tracks here catch your ear then it is worth tracking down, but overall it is just average at best.
