This one's been out a little while now, but nobody else has reviewed it and I'm a big fan, so here goes...

1.Alien Mental-Reflex Effect: 150
An excellent bugs bunny intro starts the album off on a cartoonish note. This track features a scrathcy synth and many bleeps and boops. Towards the end Alien Mental gives us a break with nice sound manipulation of the samples-definitely psychedelic. There’s a little hint of start-stop with the rhythm now and again, but overall a pretty straightforward track. A little more variation would’ve suited my tast, although the last minute has an increase in intensity. The mood for the album has been set as twisted, fast, and powerful with a humorous aspect.

2.Attoya-Coming Sykodelic Energy: 150
Attoya continues humorous, cartoony vibe and the overall mood is reminsicent of the goofy feeling of Schizm and Musica Discordia. Here we have fast and driving music with craaazy samples coming in and out, with some heavy cutting up manipulation of the vocal at times. If I was to describe this track in one word, it would certainly be “fun.” The layering of the music behind the sample is almost overwhelming. At -3:40 or so, some electro-sounding noises come in. Then, it seems as though we are in a twisted circus of some sort before the samples return. I love this bizarre track!

3.Technical Hitch-Deffective rmx: 150
Nice gurgling noises play around underneath a spiraling synth, and more and more bleeps and boops are added to the mix. The spiraling synth drops out and the bass gets fatter. At -4:35ish we get another synth, the first that’s not really bleepy and boopy…it’s followed by a funny bass line that’s a little polka-ish. Then at -3 we get a goofy break with a power rock chord or something, possibly a tv show sound effect. More spiraling follows. Finally at -2ish the track grows powerful. Overall another goofy track with nice sound manipulation that takes you on a journey over the course of the track.

4.Ocelot-Princess Soup: 148
A great, great sample to begin (I wish it was in the middle of the track, it’s so dope) and we move to less oddball and more power here. A relentless bassline and scrachty synths come to the fore. Throughout the rest of the track there’s enough bass changes, great manipulation of the leads, and interaction between different leads with the same overall sound to keep things interesting.

5.Savage Scream-Midnight Temple: 148
Ah, the first track I find to be truly “dark.” Definitely something sinister happening at the temple in question. Splashing liquids under a fat kick and haunting melody gets us in the mood for some twistedness to come. When the synths start, they are certainly freaky-sounds like some sort of snarling mechanical nightmares. At the same time, the track is quite groovy somehow. Lots of different noises coming one after the other, this is a hell of a ride. Later, some pads followed by a break with a dash of a hip-hopish beat at the end before returning to the main sound of the track. Around -2 we get more movement in the bass-nice! Reminiscent of the great bass work during the last run of the Savage Scream track from Hate. And no temple would be complete without a haunting female vocal floating in and out.

6.Digitalist v. Electrypnose-Imaginers: 150
Pretty much a solid 8 minute ride of fast staccato basslines, typical electrypnose scratchy lead and another lead, and excellent sound manipulation. Solid stuff, no real breaks or gimmicks, just a continuous onslaught. Not bad, but one of the more forgettable tracks on here, I’m sad to say.

7.Hallucinogenic Horses-Knirkmalirk: 148
Two members of Derango plus a third dude, you can hear the Derango sound for sure, especially in the bass. Like Derango, weird noises are abundant. Unlike Derango, imo, are the many quirky twists and turns this track takes in the bass in addition to the noises. Horse sounds are a plus.

8.Technical Hitch-Mechanical Version of Me: 148
The first section of this track has a great breaks-like rhythm laid over the psytrance beat while blips and boops swirl around. This creates a serious groove that culminates in the awesomely funky phrase at 5:15. More quirky sound manipulation keeps you going up and up throughout the remainder of the track-another one with a decidedly fun feel. Although the way the sounds are used in the last two minutes changes, it’s the same overall style and I think the last run gets a little meandering. Fortunately, a foghorn-type sound comes in that definitely works for my ears.

9.Bodhisattva 13:20-Dripping Moss: 148
Here we have some highly impressive technical work. Great sound manipulation on multiple parts all happening at the same time and interacting with each other. Definitely a mental track. At -3:50 we get a groovy little break to relax our over-taxed minds. Overall a solid work, but nothing about it grabs me…perhaps the lack of any semblance of a hook for my mind to latch onto during large chunks of this track is the price you pay for this level of brain-melting goodness.

10.Troglodytes-Post Confusion: 155
Hmm, fast and dark with many freaky noises/samples. Good stuff to get crazy to in the darkest hours of the night in the middle of a forest somewhere. Towards the end of the track a funky bassline and hits on the 2 and 4 create a pleasant groovy feeling. A long outro ends the disc.

Favorites: 2,5,8

Overall, the quality of this CD is so high that I suspect it might have something to do with why I’ve been disappointed with almost everything I’ve gotten since this one. Solid mastering by Kindzadza and really terrific art by Alex Komixa (my favorite for quite some time in fact) means this album totally kicks ass, period. Thanks y’all!

In my opinion the weakest Insomnia release to date... Track 5,7,10 rocked however
