I really have mixed feelings about suomi psy. I really do. A load of it stinks, only a handful of acts bother with production quality, and most of it sounds like a high bpm and less thought through version of oldschool. But on the other hand, some of it is bloody good. Antiscarp Records have a simple thing to them. They release stuff on the internet. Free downloads. This compilation (among many other releases, releases meaning free downloads from the site you guys, start your leeching!) are available here: http://www.antiscarp.tk/
I didn't expect much of this album, because I usually don't expect much of this style of music in general (other than dancefloor effectiveness, as anyone that's been to a Psychedelic Zion party and stayed away from extasy knows - this music is psychedelic territory).
1.Sora - Discomusa
2.Mulletvandalz - Robin Hood
3.Junior Goa Mob - Fresh Meat
4.Igor Swamp - Övrimozart
5.Lemon Slide - Pekka Streng on perho nen
6.Luomuhappo - Roosa Alisa Ja Osku Joi Mun Vikat Kossut
7.LPC - Rave Check
8.Mullet Mohawk - I Like 2 Move It
9.Lost Troopers - Main In Asserland
10.Tres Lost Amigos - Lacie
11.Vihtahousu - twistirätti
12.Headroom Level - +20db
13.Oikeusjyvä - Jäkälä Twist
14.Egosentrifug - High Altitude
15.Notkea Rotta - Kaupungin Vauhdissa
This album has some diversity to it, but still feels like a compilation rather than just a collection of tracks. I'd review each track on it's own, but it's 15 tracks long, ranging from 4:01 to 7:45 in length, and the tracks usually don't bother with subtleties like a complex opening sequence and never bother with a well structured ending.
You need a sense of humor to enjoy a great deal of the music here, and to accept a less controlled, less accurate view of sound. It's not easy, as these things go against everything that you hear in psytrance today - all music being 'serious dancefloor material'. There are (despite the Suomi stereotype) quite a few tracks that I found boring here. But...
... there are some gems here.
Sora's aptly named Discomusa has a funky groove which is totally awesome. Guitars, synth-based grooves and a nice floaty vibe more than make up for any faults I find in the sound.
Lemon Slide's track has a low volume, and some of it just sounds childish in production, but has a load of energy, great melodies and a sh*tload of acidic dancefloor punch with a lot of smile inducing parts that I found irresistable.
Luomuhappo delivers with solid funky groovers here for the people that like progressive but just miss those tweaky sounds sounds which made so many people listen to psytrance in the first place.
A suomi development of full-on? That's more or less what the track by LPC is all about. Melodic, happy, free-flowing energy with a rolling bassline, and psychedelic leads. Just great
Mullet Mohawk samples the cheesy dance vocal after which the track is named, but in itself, this track is all about acidic sounds driving everything, with the bassdrum less important than a good brain-bashing.
The rockish +20db from Headroom Level is great, because it has some decent percussion and synth work and a really nice electric guitar. Sounds a simple way to describe a track? This one proves that you don't need any more than these simple things to make something good. Not exactly the smartest track ever, but seriously, who cares?
But if you really want to remember what acidic energy in psytrance can do, Egosentrifug - High Altitude is all about that. Loud, noisy, melodic, sometimes very cheesy. Only not percussion based. Great track all in all.
About all the other tracks... well, I didn't like them much. Some were boring, others had no real content to make up for the mediocre sound, and other such problems. I'm not sure if I like or dislike the Mandalavandalz tracks here, and I guess all the die-hard fans will tell me I missed the best tracks in the album. I don't care really. And I think that this is the point of the album.
It's free, so why give a f*ck? Listen, enjoy, shut up and dance, or forever hold your peace.
Favorites: 1, 5!, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14
and a very big thank you to suomi guy for bringing this compilation to my attention. http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222 |

it's been a while since i last time gave finnish psytrance a chance, maybe i'll check this one out someday..
the title of track 6 goes something like "Roosa, Alisa and Osku drank my last Vodka" ..which is sort of.. well bizarre
track 15 has to be hiphop, no? i once went to a notkearotta gig
"The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program."

Nice comp.
I just love how unpretentious the finnish music sounds.
They have fun in the studio, and that makes you have fun on the dance floor.
Sure with the playful attitude it's not all hits, but it wouldn't be as fun of course if they was more strict in their attitude.
Breifly, my favs:
Sora - Discomusa
Very funky and funny
Mulletvandalz - Robin Hood
Fat old-school sound
Lemon Slide - Pekka Streng on perho nen
Very typical finn-trance. Makes you want to jump around and be silly
Shame about the low volume, would be nice with some basic mastering of the tracks to bring them to equal levels at least.
Luomuhappo - Roosa Alisa Ja Osku Joi Mun Vikat Kossut
Like to hear more finnish music like this one, more suitable for the night.
Nice to stirr up the party mood early night.
LPC - Rave Check
Like Kaz said, a bit of crossover between the finnish and regular full-on. Must say it reminds me a lot about old eat-static. Killer morning tune. Lacking a bit treble unfortunally, could do with some mastering.
Tres Lost Amigos - Lacie
A little bit more serious, deep and mystical sounding tune. Also working in the night, but with the jumpy bassline typical of the finns.
Vihtahousu - twistirätti
Don't know how easy it's to fit in in a party for me, but a great example of madness and a everything goes spirit. Crazy nuts.
Oikeusjyvä - Jäkälä Twist
Very nice old-school driving bassline. A bit fast for me maybe.
Egosentrifug - High Altitude
Here we have really great finnish night music.
More of this please. Melodies a bit cheezy maybe, but I don't doubt this track kicks in the party. It would send me of on one for sure.
Considering the gems on the comp, but also the varying quality and volume, all in all it has to be 7/10
