Highly surprising this one hasn’t been reviewed yet, but I’ll try my best:
TRACKLIST:
1. Terminator :: Cube
2. Fungus Funk :: Geona
3. Psychotic Micro :: Vampire Legend
4. Parasense :: Iron Punk
5. Mic :: Arithmetic
6. Freaking :: ICQ
7. Fungus Funk :: Dis
8. Seroxat :: Mental Distorted
9. Psychotic Micro :: Fright Night
After the killing debut of DiscoValley Records with the "Nocturne" release last year, along comes another dose of high-energy, high-quality, high-peractive psytrance. This one again features the glitterati of dark psytrance – Fungus Funk, Psychotic Micro, Freaking, Parasense - and other newer but equally mad sound mechanics.
Terminator (Zolod from Parasense) starts the journey straight up with “Cube”, a nice, almost-funky number with a steady beat and lots of growly sounds. I love the way the track keeps building up without any noticeable jumps or a single breakdown, and by the end of it you’re jumping a few feet high in the air. The Parasense connection is very apparent. A great start to the compilation.
It took me a long time to appreciate Fungus Funk, but now I lap up anything he throws my way. Often imitated but never duplicated, the unique Fungus bassline features again in “Geona”. No breakdowns here either, though there’s enough buzzing sounds to make mincemeat of your brains. Fungus tracks are very difficult to review, maybe because of the strange effect they have on your body - they shut down all systems of your body except your legs and lips. So I just suggest you listen to the track and bounce and smile.
Next on stage are the two wild animals from Psychotic Micro, these guys seriously need to be put in a cage and locked up forever. They waste no time in bringing in their signature bassline that has shot them straight to the top of my “must watch Live” list. Their first track on this compilation, “Vampire Legend” has all the regular bells and whistles that make Psychotic tracks easy to recognize, and even easier to stomp to. I wasn’t blown away with this one, but it has the “Authentic Psychotic Micro” stamp on it, and that’s good enough for me.
Next up is the original master of dark trance from Russia, my personal all-time favorite – Parasense. These guys can make even pots and pans clanging together sound great - hold on a second - looks like that’s exactly what they’re trying out on “Iron Punk”. Play this one loud, and let the sweet metallic sounds punch a few holes in your head while the ever-building Parasense bassline makes you dance like a punk.
Mic’s “Arithmetic” is easy – add infinite layers of mind-twisting bleeps and plinks to 1 driving bassline, subtract all cheesy samples and breakdowns (well, maybe add just a teeny sample), and voila, you have a winner. Pretty melodic for the general theme of the compilation, this non-stop stomper will take you on a paranoic journey through the dark of the night.
Freaking has been turning up on my trance radar with amazing regularity since they released the wonderful Carmen on the must-buy Sirius compilation, and for good reason. Dark and twisted, yet melodic and happy at the same time, their tracks are sure to satisfy the tastes of a large majority of trancers (except for progressive fans, but then that’s not really psytrance, is it? Ok Ok, just kidding, couldn’t help that one). “ICQ” starts off with a froggy sample, and then takes off straight into a monster bassline layered with a melody that you can’t really put your finger on, the almost 9-minute journey sprinkled with completely unexpected twists and turns along the way. I could keep talking, but “delightful” kinda sums it up, so I’ll shut up. Freaking is another side project of Zolod with Cristy (who I hear is his girlfriend?), and all I can say is these two make music together, and damn good shit at that.
Uh-oh, here comes another one from Fungus Funk. Check “Dis” out, and you’ll know why I say Fungus tracks are difficult to review. The relentless beat and vortex-like sounds appear to go on for ages, and just when you think of taking a break to roll one while this seemingly monotonous track ends, the beat suddenly stops at about 4:00……. And I don’t how it happens, but that silence completely wipes your mind blank and then it’s back to stomp land. The joint can wait….
Damn….we are fucked, we are fucked, we are fucked, we are fucked. Ok, that’s just the sample in “Mental Distorted”, which is the star debut of Seroxat. But if this is what we can expect from this latest export from Israel, we might really be fucked. Psychedelic to the max, this track is a loaded goody-bag filled with cool samples, tingling sounds of screams and phones ringing, and lots of assorted ear-candy. All of this over the modest bassline which makes sure your legs stay busy while your mind tries to figure out what planet you’re on.
Well, nobody seems to have locked up the wild animals so far, so here they are, back with another dose of paranoia by the name of “Fright Night”. Starting with the monkey sample from I-Zen’s classic Voices mixed with that freaky ping-pong ball sound from Parasense’s Noodle-Doodle, this track is the staple fare of big booms and off-key melodies from the psychotic duo, but highly enjoyable nonetheless – if you’re still alive at the end of this mind-blowing compilation.
I’m trying to think of a rating to give this compilation, and if it were completely up to me I wouldn’t hesitate with a 9/10 because simply put, I live off these sounds. DJs also shouldn’t think twice about this, this one will get you laid for sure . But to be fair to everyone’s taste, I’ll take off a point just because some might find it a little hard to listen to it at home. So finally it’s an 8/10. Big thanks to Disco Valley for keeping it real, and for pulling this off in such short time after Nocturne. We’re waiting for more….
