i think it`s time i get myself a new toy, but i don`t want to get the usual synths everyone always buy.
so i`m thinking of getting the roland v-synth seeing as i was so impressed with the flexibilaty of the jp8000. does anyone here have the v-synth and if so, are you happy with it.
i`ve checked out some interactive demo`S on the net and it looks pretty wicked. |

I tried it and thought it was ok. Did not give it a good run but I thought it was not that special, especially for the price. If you want variphrase technology the very cheap VP-9000 sampler. It does not sound as good as the V-Synth (apparently, I used the VP-9000 3 years ago, so I don't remember the exact quality, but it was very close to the V-Synths variphrase tricks).
There are some ok sounding "exotic" filters, but the conventional ones where nothing special.
The interface will make you work in somewhat differnt ways than basic subtractive synths, so you may find that inspiring, or hate its guts.
Best thing to head down you local dealer and try it out for your self really.
As far as special synths, you can simply get a nice modular from a company that makes "unusual" sounding modules.

i get the impression that you`ll have to work with the v-synth for at least a good year before you`ll start seeing it`s full potencial...which is ok for me, cause it means it will take me longer before i get bored with it.
anyway, will check it out at the shops, but shops can never really show you much. |

In v-synth roland has put together a lots of gadgets from other gear: d-beam controlers, touch sensitive pad and all.
which is kind of cool. i do not own this synth, and i don't think i will though, for the main reason that it's slow, takes some time while going through the internal functions and processing signal. that was the impression i got when toying with it.

Roland would make the most uber super synth if they took a Fantom and a V-Synth and stuck the two together.....i want one of those....hehe
another problem with the v-synth is it has only 8 polyphony i think....not much for todays standards
as far as synthesis goes i think it has great potential and pretty powerful indeed, wouldnt mind having one.

The Roland V-Synth is totally crazy. Buy it if you've got the money - it's not a multitimbral "workhorse" synth, its a performance synth meant to play 1 part in your arrangement, and well.
The thing can take expansion cards ... there was one of the new rack versions down at the synth shop and my buddy that works there was showing it to me. One card was a full D-50 emulation (fm) and the other was a vocal transformer card that could do totally insane stuff. My friend is NOT a mainstream guy, he makes hardcore glitch/idm/terrorcore and he loves this thing. The new rack version is dope, he was saying he might get rid of his keyboard version to replace it with the rack.
I would too if I could justify buying another synth, but I can't.
It's a really deep synth. Research it more...

so the general feeling is: not a synth for instant gratification.
right?

gratification can be instant if someone's into tweaking preset sounds, but once you dive deeper, that's when the frustration starts, it really takes awhile to process the sound, almost like having a dialup internet connection. maybe the demo unit (the one that i played on) was fcuked, not sure, but tried 2 of those, and both were slow.
plus i personally think it's way too overpriced (v-synths are over $2,000).

Again, Deo i need to explain. All these basically digital workstation with high quality keyboards but not only synthesizers we use in electronic music. They are way more.

agree, they are way more then just synths, these are basically all in one solutions. but i do think that electronic music can be done on any of thess highly priced workstations though.

a roland synth will have a lot of roland sounds, especially the workstations, i don't see the originality of buying a V-synth (except for the variphrase technology). If u want a truely original synth that's really usefull for psytrance production, check out the electron monomachine (example). I'm actually cutting in my own flesh now, because i want to buy one myself, but this synth isn't owned by a lot of people and has it's very own sound, in fact it's 4 simple (yet very original) synths thrown into one box. |

Part of the Monomachine has had millions of users in the past
True though, although expensive, it has it's own sound.
Breakbeat producers are into it as well.
