Transient Records fourth release after their collapse and recent resurrection is Salida Del Sol (”Sunrise” in Spanish), ostensibly a sequel of sorts to Transient Dawn, released in 1997. Conceivably, the concept remains the same: this compilation is designed to showcase morning-friendly music, as the name would imply. Of course, the energetic full-on style of Salida Del Sol has almost nothing in common with the late-nineties vision of morning trance, which, at the time, consisted of deep tribal Goa trance. Qualms with the choice of name aside, the lightly mixed Transient Dawn: Salida Del Sol profiles artists new and old, gathering nine songs selected by DJ Kristian that share an upbeat and melodic approach.
Veteran producer Orion leads the charge with The Capirinha Effect, an impressive offering lightly sprinkled with gorgeous melodic themes reminiscent of Jean Michel Jarre. True to form, the bubbling bass lines and crisp synthetic rhythms are cloaked in dense layers of immaculately polished details. The effortless flow, intelligent arrangement, and excellent production value of this song confirm that Orion is at the forefront of modern psychedelic trance.
Krunch is a relatively new project from former Dark Soho members Rizo (Omer Kadosh) and Ze’ev Dukeman, with some help from Gilad Samucha. Although The Show is competently produced, employing crowd noise as the centrepiece of the track is gimmicky in the extreme. Fortu’s Monkey Biz is a standard slice of morning-friendly full-on with no outstanding attributes. Vibra reprehensibly overuses a series of annoying samples on Side Effect, nullifying what enjoyment might have been gleaned from their tough attitude and funky grooves. Dejavoo takes a stab at the electro-hybrid style of full-on currently popular with the likes of Joti Sidhu and Dino Psaras, but Disco Shit suffers from more bad sample usage. This batch is a disappointing lot.
The compilation gets back on track with Broken Toy (James Copeland), who recently released his second album on Alchemy Records. Hole In The Clouds is fat as hell and bursting with groove and style. This is a sure pick for any fans of furiously funky full-on.
Krüger & Coyle achieved a major hit in 2003 with The Witness, a progressive house anthem later released with their full-length album Randy Expander. Four years later, Dejavoo have attempted to put a new face on The Witness by translating it into full-on, but the execution falls short. The rolling bass lines, explosive builds, and accelerated tempo do not compliment the tribal qualities of the original.
Plastic Vibe is formed by Rizo and Franceso of Dejavoo. Inner Mind reaches deeper into blissful morning territory with ecstatic breakdowns and uplifting atmospheres, but it ends up feeling rather ordinary. Perhaps this has to do with there being no awe or mystery left in using that hackneyed sample from The Outer Limits yet again.
Human Blue (Dag Wallin) brings Salida Del Sol to a respectable close with A La Carte, an amazing morning anthem composed in the style of his recent album misStArRyAs Xperience (also released on Transient). Now this is trance with real substance! Brilliant melodies, gleaming rhythms, and a powerful drive ensure a positive response at home or on the dance floor. Beautiful!
Salida Del Sol is an average compilation at best. Book-ended by two extraordinary tracks, the body of the work fails to deliver—with the exception of Broken Toy’s solid effort. Under new management, Transient is moving forward into contemporary psychedelic dance music trends, but in doing so they risk becoming just another full-on label. Salida Del Sol is packed with “crowd-pleasing” tunes, but in this case the use of the phrase is merely a euphemism to excuse tacky and ephemeral techniques. With all this filler, it would be difficult to recommend this compilation widely, but at least most of these tracks will be usable for DJs passionate about the melodic and upbeat side of full-on psychedelic trance. My advice: cherry-pick the good tunes off the digital download shops and leave the plastic on the shelves.
