4. Ryan Hallifax : Love Song
5. Foreplay : Suppose I m Leading
6. FREq : Generator
7. Gaudium : 4 Outputs
8. Paulina Cewe : Exophilia
9. Sleek aka. Liquid Soul : Can t Sleep
Formerly known for being a graphic designer and DJ for the late Spiral Trax label, Bakke, who had already compiled in 2002 a nice Prog compilation titled Bakkelit at his home label and illustrated some CD covers for Iboga, has gathered the nine tracks that form Iboga’s Set 7, subtitled Declivity.
1/Tomic : Emotion (130 bpm)
Tomic is the alias of Thomas Wagner from Germany. He has been producing music for quite some time, and has got a few releases on 'Stripped Digital' and 'Fraud Recordings'. Emotion is a housy tribal groover with echoing vocal snippets and pads. After a forthright intro featuring nice percussions, comes a bouncy bassline that shows the way to a funky lead evolving towards a softly reverberating powerful lead. It ushers in a simple yet elegant atmospheric melody. A smart opening track which successfully combines housy groove and the broad soundscape that fits outdoor events.
2/ Lish : Consciousness (127 bpm)
After two artist albums, and one remixed, Lish comes back with a quite different sound that they got us used to, more club oriented. Differences opens with the relentless rhythmic structure reminiscent of D-Nox and Beckers’ Memory Cell. A dreamy theme soon comes in which intertwines its notes with a voice sample going ‘consciousness, with each moment/creates perfection/wherever you go/now is the moment/here is the place/hear the visions, the sounds, the thoughts’. A nice break builds up an ever increasing melodic tension with nice delay fx towards the end. Lish is back in a very nice way.
3/Dean Fuel and Metcalfe : Sexy Hippy (128 bpm)
This duo features the producers Adam Metcalfe of Headroom fame, signed on Nano Records, and Dean Fuel both from South Africa. In Sexy Hippy, Bakke has found an electro gem! The tune is named after a voice sample saying ‘really sexy hippy’ that receives all kinds of kinky treatments throughout the track. It overlays a very playful rhythmic section with breaks, while the typical electro rubbery electro synth does its funky job. This track surpasses the great majority of the electro output, which, IMHO, tend to be formulaic these days. No doubt any dance floor will succumb to its charms.
4/Ryan Halifax : Love Song (130 bpm)
German producer Ryan Halifax delivers another hard pounding prog-house groover, made of the same metal as his biggest recent successes released at Plusquam, such as Chocolate or Clementine to name but a few. In this one, his typical recurring male voice goes ‘love is like magic,/and it always will be’? while a high pitched synth adds a definite acid flavour. Another winner in this compilation.
5/Foreplay : Suppose I’m leading (131 bpm)
Foreplay is a duo of producers from Slovenia, and another newcomer to the Iboga roster. The track catches attention for its trancey touch with a classic bouncy bassline unfolding a nice pumping thrust. It craftily weaves mesmerizing melodic leads that undergo interesting variations all the way, sometimes punctuated by metallic or woodblock sounds. The tranciest tune so far in this compilation.
6/FREq : Generator (135 bpm)
Unsurprisingly, the tempo rises to the typical 135 bpm cruiser with Freq who confirms the quality of his post 2nd album production, after a strong release on Ace Ventura’s compilation New Order at Hommega. Generator is a massive stomper with emotional elliptic echoing nordlead lines. This is Aran Gallagher at his best level with a morning anthem that will thrive at outdoor parties this summer for sure. Thumbs up!
7/Gaudium : 4 Outputs (134 bpm)
Has Gaudium found a new home with Iboga? After their successful 1st album at Spiral Trax in 2005, the Swedish duo (Andreas Wennerskold and Denis Bajramovski) was announced a few months ago to have joined the Iboga roster with the intention of publishing a second album. 4 Ouputs is expertly constructed with the typical oscillating bass/kick combo that you often found in their album. An interesting break features a high pitched whining harmonic twist that eventually leads to a slightly less elegant melodic resolution. However, a very nice track with their signature Scando epic vein.
8/Paulina Cewe : Exophilia (135 bpm)
Dj, producer and vocalist Paulina Cewe is not exactly a newcomer since she has already one artist album under her belt released under the Gen 6 moniker in 2003 at Creon records. Exophilia is rather a dark tribal piece focusing mainly on the percussive aspect of trance. It features a distant female voice saying ‘concentrate on visualizing the flow of time’. Some discreet Absolut-like twists and turns in the break bring a quick funky light into it before it closes on soothing atmospheric pads.
9/ Sleek aka. Liquid Soul : Can't Sleep (125 bpm)
Last but not least we have a track from Sleek who would be yet another newcomer if the man behind this alias was no less than Nicola Capobianco, of Liquid Soul fame, whose 1st album last year at Iboga continues to gain audiences in the parties worldwide. ‘Can’t sleep’ takes his music 10 bpm slower than usual and sounds even fatter. It’s a hard pounding piece and its reverberating and stripped down theme at times hints at Atmos’ music. Great way to conclude with a track that would also make a nice opener.
Bottom line
Bakke has compiled with taste yet another quality compilation, introducing new names (or names that undeservedly did not attract critical attention) or names familiar with Spiral Trax/ACDC, offering a wide range of stylistic influences going from prog-house to prog-electro to trance. All tracks are flawlessly produced, needless to say. There are no weak links in the chain so it is difficult to pick favourite numbers. However I would confess a soft spot for # 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7. Another winner from Iboga!

Not surprisingly, very nice work by Bakke here. Smooth flow and overall good music with enough excellent moments.
Standouts are Gaudium, Rian Halifax (why not invest a little in someone professional to do the lyrics, though?), Freq, Lish & Sleek (what's with the stupid 'aka'?). No bad moments in general and fun to listen to.
Recommended.

Great stuff once again from Iboga. The compilation builds up real nice and for me it gets better and better until the final massive deep track from Sleek. More like that one please!! My faves: 5,6,7,8,9 but the rest is ok as well

Yup, that's how I got it, from Psyshop Don't care much for those web-releases as mp3 format. You can't beat cd's.
