V.A. - Rainbow Serpent Festival 2004
Label: Green Ant Records, Australia
Year: December 2004

The Rainbow Serpent festival takes place each year in Australia, and is one of the biggest, most known and respected festivals world-wide. this year the Rainbow Serpent 2005 will take place in the 21-25 this month, and this is one event I sure would be more then happy to participate in.
you can read a lot more about the festival, it's concept and a whole bunch of other terrific stuff regarding the festival and it's spirit in it's website :
http://www.rainbowserpent.net
and now, to the business:

1. Sun Control Species - Underage Japanese
Girls 7:46

Drew (Drooid) from Australia, already released various gems on labels such as ZMA, Sub Machine, Manta etc, gives us a slow progressive opener which sets the mood for the compilation with it's morning atmosphere, begins with soothing pads, just in time for the sunrise, is getting pumped with a big baseline, and few light percussion, sounds really Japanese (Underage Girls ?) in style, develops slowly, and is layered with some vicious pads, this is a real good open air track for the first rays of sun, and sends good energies and very uplifting

2. Freq - Our Instincts 8:13

Our beloved Freq (Aran Gallagher) from Australia, is one of the leading Progressive-Psy producers IMO, gives us a progressive stomper in his typical and loved style, very cool and stompey, this track is rocking as hell, it's got all the recipes.
a pumping baseline follow by a monotonic sample goes: "Our Instincts", sends shivers down my spine, what a huge sound this guy produce !!! it amaze me. suddenly it breaks, and again builds to it's peak, and keeps on shining, this is a very cool and smooth, clean progressive groover, perfect for morning hours, shake that ass baby !!
one of my favorites.

3. Paste - Code Bed (Antix Rmx) 8:05

The Strom Brothers (and Embark) remix the original track by Paste (Patrick Sonderegger & Stefan Keller) from Switzerland, originally released on the debut Blow Out (Interzone, 2003) is got a very deep atmosphere, with a solid baseline and rhythm, you can almost immediately recognize Antix in their style, but unfortunately, this is pretty monotonic, and doesn't really go anywhere, it develops a bit in the second half of the track, although it still feels like it lacks something.
nonetheless, this is a nice and deep solid tune, but I just hold very high standard for this guys, no offence but this is not one of the strongest spots in the compilation.

4. Mindelight - Morning Light 8:20

This duo (Hernan Arver & Javier Calcada) consists of Eclypso (great live act) and Loco (dunno which is which... ?), kicks off with a big atmosphere, very fast paced, and all of a sudden... guitars !!! this is really fantastic, a great happy and psychedelic feel all around, stomping as hell.
is topped together with rolling baseline, until the break, chorus, and right then, a sample from "Lord of the Rings" hits the right spot, and fits perfectly to the track.
this is a great full-on fast paced, energetic tune, and suits real good for the late hours of the morning, this is one of my favorites.

5. Pixel vs. Intelabeam - Methaminimal (Sub 6 Edit) 6:45

Here we get our very own Pixel (Eli Biton)and Intelabeam (Dan Keinan) getting the treatment by one of the leading producers in Israel (Golan Aharoni & Ohad Aharoni).
kicking in with some creepy crunchy sounds, getting started in no time, the pounding baseline gives the no-nonsense feel to it, as you just want to move & groove to it. it contains a deep atmosphere all through, and it's like it just swing back & forth all the time, until it suddenly fades a bit, then kicks off again in full gear. a very jumpy and energetic tune, with a good flow all the way through, another one of my favorites.

6. Fractal Glider - Things That Go Bump in the Night (Rmx) 8:22

Wow ! this is really a sick piece , Paul McCosh from Australia is giving us a remixed version of this gem, that can be also found remixed by Rastaliens on Rehashed compilation (BooM! Records, 2004), can anyone tell me where could one find the original version if there is one at all ?
this is a very weird and twisted piece of music, it begins with a lot of very distorted and damaged sound effects, and continues with high-octane all the way through, consists of a steady baseline, and a scary, horror movies like atmosphere, this is maybe the only track here which is not morning-oriented. you can say a lot about the track as a whole, this could not be the cup of tea for many, but as far as the atmosphere it tries to create, the result is very good.

7. Benza - The Wolf (Live Mix) 9:03

Another Australian artist here (Ben Rynderman) gives us a really unique piece of music here - it's based on the "Peter and the Wolf" story, and it got samples and classical pieces thrown all through it.
it begins with a baby whining, some rough pads, and a twisted sample, some really moving stuff. it continues and sounds kind of insane, some chaotic moments, although not dark at all, and suddenly, you can hear the classical bit from "Peter and the Wolf" ! man, this is some weird shit, but I love it ! taking us with a great nostalgic, Goaish melody-like, spreading classical elements all the time, then you get the tubas towards the end, and that's how it ends. this is a very unique and special gem, kind of weird and pretty sick, but nonetheless very wonderful !

8. Kruger & Coyle - Junglemuff 6:55

The fantastic duo Sebastian Kruger from Germany and Greg Coyle from UK, known better as Kruger & Coyle, brings us this gem already released on the album - Randy Expander (ACDC, 2004).
This is a progressive hit, very clubby in sound, and reminds me of "The Witness" tune, it's got a chubby beat, and a tribal atmosphere with those great Indian chants, very joyful and happy, this is a carnival ! later on you get a native callings, which at once sets a huge smile on your face. this is a very groovy and joyful club hit, ass shaking material, I just love those guys.

9. Decoy - Sitting Duck 7:21

Decoy are Ian Chaplin & Philip Rex, and they released a track on Demon Tea, and another one on Green Ant, and that's all I managed to find out about them, if anyone can enlighten me it would be great. some electro touches in the beginning, and few digital sounds all around, this one develops slowly, and is pretty psychedelic and got a nice baseline. although this is a nice tune, it's really "pale" and mediocre, and doesn't really go anywhere, this is pretty weak spot, sorry, this is not my cup of tea

10. Sugar - Lemon Tree 6:24

Felix Hamer from Australia produce some really kick ass crazy shit, and here he gives us another one of his tunes, unfortunately, this wasn't really what I was expecting from him, after hearing several rocking material, it kicks off with drumming, and a solid baseline, pretty deep in atmosphere, it develops slowly into a bigger baseline, a dramatic break gives it all the emotional feel, but it doesn't really manages to get up from there, sorry again but I found it pretty disappointing.

Bottom Line: This festival is a celebration of happiness and life, and the compilation really gives you an idea it's spirit, this compilation is designed for progressive freaks I think more then full-on lovers, it is very morning-oriented, very sunny and joyful, although not really rocking, but more soothing and more home-listening friendly. I contains some names which are not so recognized to a lot of people, and is a good chance to get to know and hear, recommanded, although I wouldn't call it most-have.
Also the artwork is superb, and contains a nice booklet with photos from last year festival.

Favorites: 1, 2(!), 4(!), 5, 6, 7, 8(!)
Final Score: 8/10
