Review

Prime Cuts is the debut release from new label BEEF Records, experimental sister label of well known Tribal Vision who have taken the scene by storm with their outstanding progressive releases. Having been very impressed with Tribal Vision's professionalism and incredibly fast rise to become one of the top labels, and also having seen some of DJ Schwa's Australian tour showcasing the CD, I was curious to hear BEEF Records first compilation "Prime Cuts" compiled by Schwa himself.

The Prime Cuts compilation is an experimental, cutting, blurred boundry, electro compilation. Featuring some top progresive and electro artists this CD is an extremely innovative, professional, exciting, fresh breath of air. Progressive has recently taken on a lot of electro influence which I believe has helped a fantastic new sound to emerge, and this compilation is a perfect example of the electro doing the influencing! Leaning a little closer towards the 'electro' side of 'electro-prog', this CD rocks with blips, twists, funk, unique sounds and innovative ideas. Although in general, the Tribal Vision sound is closer to my personal taste, this compilation is a must-have. The track selection as well as track placement is very well thought out, and develops throughout the CD. Looking back over the development of Tribal Vision, it almost seems like Prime Cuts is an off-shoot branching further into electro territory after TV's absolute gem of a compilation, "Street Art".

Track Overview

Love Boat's 'Bootyooty' opens the cd setting the mood and quality for what's to come, nice & warped, this is a solid starter. Oliverio & MOS's remix of "Peter Sky - Fuck them all" is a deep, experimental number with some almost 'James Holden' type elements, and a twisted vocoded voice guiding us through the track with enough swearing to give this track a higher-than-PG rating! Electro legend Trent E Mollar's Remix of "Coincidance" is another deep, moving track that bounces along with a snappy, fresh vibe. Next up is the Martinex Apocalypse Now Mix of D-Nox's well known hit "Seven Hours" - an awesome track with innovative & fresh sounds that opens up even more into quite a dirty, funky electro beast! "D-Sens - Just cant without U" is next with a deep looped vocal sample pushing through the track, this one is roar and driving. "The End is getting close" is probably closer to borderlining a 4/4 progressive beat than previous tracks. Big and open, this is a quality inclusion to the compilation. Next up is "In Motion N Sicknes" by top producers D-Sens & Motion with their very nicely sculpted electro flavour. With nice dirty roar sidechained synths and bleepy goodness, this is another one of my tops on the album. The CD closes with "Breakfast at Deca" presenting 303'esque elements pushing through this acidic electro track.

Favourites: 2, 4, 6, 9

Conclusion

After Tribal Vision burst onto the scene with their consistantly top quality releases, artists and DJ's, it's no doubt that BEEF Records will have a bright future ahead of it. Prime Cut's is a great first release, and I have the utmost respect to Schwa & Slater for pushing something new & innovative. I will definitely continue following the development of these two exciting labels.

10. DJ Jack - Breakfast At Deca

This is the debut release of Tribal Vision’s sub-label called BEEF records. The label is taken care of by Dj Schwa and this release is also compiled by him.

1. The compilations starts off with a glitchy, yet groovy beat that almost seems a little abstract (in a good way). After a brief intro, the track breakdowns and when it kicks in, Love Boat brings in his bassline that is a true ass shaker. This one sounds like a computer system on acid with a little bit of water spilled on the control panel. Its not really melodic, yet it doesn’t lack melodies. Its just plain Bootyootylishous.. J

2. This next one slows down the beat a little as the Bpm’s drop down a few. This track disturbs me a little. Throughout the song, there’s this robo-voice that says all sorts of ridiculous things.. “Everyone can kiss my ass… motherfucker suck my dick” shit like that .. its hard to follow and I find those samples really kill this one. It’s a very nice track to listen to, but the samples don’t fit the track, let alone the fact that nobody understands why the voice is saying such things.. lol.. its really funny when you think about it and I think it was more intended to be a joke more than anything. It’s a very loungy beat with a lot of static and beeps everwhere. Reminds me of an alarm system with a low battery charge.

3. umm, okay, no more time for jokes anymore. The star of the CD, Trentmoller remixes a tune from Mathias Schaffhauser and turns it into an electro-minimal delight.. This one has a very dark electro feel to it with a lot of hardcore glitch’s brilliantly timed. Lets not forget the bassline in this one. The only thing that bother’s me a little is the constant breakdowns in the early stages of the track but its all worth while I guess when you hear the new sounds that the breakdowns bring into the track. This is by far one of the nicest tracks I’ve heard in a while.. it seems like the track skips a few times too which adds a lot of creativity to the track. Hot hot music here !!

4. This next one is a even darker than the previous tracks and feels slower. D-nox allows Martinez to remix this one and he does an ok job too.. there are some sounds in this song that just blew my mind away. Its defiantly a lot more laid back than the previous tracks and would be a great transition tune to go from electro to progressive. I haven’t heard the original, but im sure it’s a little groovier.. this one sounds a little dry at times. Good one none-the-less.. J

5. Shuma combines even more progressive music with a heavy electro feel to it. I’m starting to dig more and more this guys music as this one is the most electroish so far with a very electroclash bassline. I like the intensity this track has to offer, and it really gets heavier and heavier as its progresses. This is a must for all electro fans.

6. D.sens gets things groovy again as his hidden vocal is the main focus of this track. Its as if the voice in the background was to say something but can’t seem to speak proper English until you can finally hear more and more of it, clearer and clearer. It’s a okay track but lacks a little intensity for my likings.

7. Can you say electro?? I know for a fact that Alex can after hearing him scream this one out loud. Great track structure and really funky electro sounds. He uses that robo-voice in this one too, but it doesn’t attract as much attention as in track 2 and is much more enjoyable here. If you like electro, you’ll for sure dig this one as much as I do. J

8. This one has a more housy feel ( in the percussions) from the start and it really feels good to hear after a bunch of more electro influenced tracks. Unfortunatly, it looses that feel as the track goes on and it ends up sounding like all the rest of the tracks on this compilation. Its good I guess, but nothing to knock your head on the wall over.

9. Well, being a HUGE fan of Motion, I was really curious to see if his collaboration with D.sens would help his sound even more.. the end result is most probably one of the tracks I will play out the most in the next 6 months. This one combines just about everything we have heard so far, along with a very relaxing morning melody and a very strong bassline. Wow, just magical music. These guys should form a side project of some sort because we defiantly need more music like this one (or at least, I do !!!) It fits in perfectly after all these tracks as it really calms the mind. It has a hard electro feel, with the best aspects of progressive psy. Just WOW again !!

10. Okay, we are almost over, as Silky Jack vs Marcos Salo have the honors to close up this one. This is to my ears an acid techno song slowed down by about 30 bpms’. Its very 303 influenced and is kind of annoying to someone like me who hates having a 303 highpitched acid sound in songs. Not something I’d like to talk about really. Sound quality is good though and has some interesting moments, just not for me.

Over all, this CD is something that really surprised me and the varied artist roster is what really makes this cd special. Definatly something for all electoheads to grab and its great for the house lovers as well and even some progressive if you play it slow. Not recommended for all Vegitarians or Vegans.. Ohh yeah, not to mentio is awesome CD artwork. It really makes me laugh seeing two cows ram each other !!!

Favs : 1!, 3!!, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9!!!

Enjoy..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9

I heard this comp. at a friends place, and i just want to say how much i love that petersky track. theres nothing like a robot with tourettes synrome

The martinez remix and the trentemoller mix are quite old, but still awesome, so in general i guess this is a pretty cool compilation to get.           Check out my album: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/gay-satanic-hippie-tiefenrausch

Review:

Electro panic!

Beef Records is a newly established sub-label to the Czech progressive power-house label Tribal Vision… This sub label will focus primarily on electro and electro-soaked music – a style that seems to be becoming increasingly popular and has recently crossed over in to more mainstream club territory… Anyway, I know a couple of the artists listed here – but most of them are completely new to me… Let’s have a listen…

Let me take you thru the tracks…

#01: Love Boat – Bootyooty [128 BPM]
Love Boat is Danish producer Jakob Ernst Ilsøe (aka Jokke from True To Nature) & Renata Carrocelli Kleber. Together they’ve made a futuristic, minimalist booty-shaker of a track… And by minimalist, I mean really minimal – despite the seemingly many layers and the subtle progression, this track is simply too lo-fi for my tastes… It’s not bad, but it’s not great either… It’s so-so!

#02: Petersky – Fuck Them All (Oliverio & MOS Remix) [127 BPM]
Petersky is young producer Piotr Wozniak – and his explicit track is reworked by MOS (Manuel Sofia from Argentina) and Oliverio (Oliverio Sofia also from Argentina I presume!?). Anyway, this is a much more interesting track then the opener… Despite the lower BPM, this seems like a faster track and the rich electro seems much more refined – and the real treat here is the hilarious robotic samples… I think my fellow reviewer Aje coined it best when he said ‘theres nothing like a robot with tourettes synrome’… Haha, that’s true! Sweet track that would also work when dropped in sets of other styles… Would mix perfectly with *that* Meller tune… I like it!

#03: Mathias Schaffhäuser – Coincidance (Trentemøller Remix) [128 BPM]
Mathias Schaffhäuser is the extremely productive label boss of the minimal electronics label Ware – he has released a gazillion tracks, EPs and CDs and this one was originally on the album of the same name released in 2005. On here it’s being remixed by none other than Danish sensation Anders Trentemøller who is currently one of Denmark’s hottest dance music exports… And I gotta hand it to the guy, he sure knows how to turn those knobs just right… This track is so simple, yet so incredibly deep… The white noise static is a little masterpiece in its own right! This is über-electronica which is equally old-school and futuristic… It’s the perfect hybrid! Totally groovy and totally hypnotic!

#04: D-Nox – Seven Hours (Martinez Apocalypse Now Mix) [125 BPM]
D-Nox (Christian Wedekind) is one of the Germany’s most talented progressive DJs… He’s also a producer and I’ve especially enjoyed his output made with Franck Beckers… This remix by Martinez (Martin Swanstein) was originally released on wax on Electribe Records in 2005… Anyway, this track has richer progressive trance elements than some of the previous choons – though it’s still very much an electro groover… I like the subtle percussion and the tighter, groovier pads here… A nice little crossover tune!

#05: Shuma – Rustyrobots [128 BPM]
I really liked Shuma’s (Emir Cehaic & Davor Tosovic from Croatia) original version of Illektro featured on the Tribal Vision compilation Lime Light – that track encompassed a really phat and edgy blend of progressive trance and electro… And so does this one! Old-school analogue bliss meets modern rhythm progression… And what a clash of the titans this is! This is huuuge, wall-to-wall electro-slash-crossover bliss… Instantly funky and downright groovy! Awesome!

#06: D. Sens – Just Can’t Without U [125 BPM]
D.Sens is Frenchman Matthieu Delepeau known for his involvement in Luna Spice and Cosmosquad… I wasn’t particularly taken with his track off the 2005 VP Records compilation Inspirazzia… Luckily this track is better… We’re still somewhere in between deep, raw progressive trance and fluffy electro… I like the distorted vox and the sharp contrasts – and all in all this is a subtle groover… Good without being amazing...

#07: Alex Kenji – Cyborg (Original Mix) [126 BPM]
Alex Kenji is an alias used by Alessandro Bacci who apparently made it to #1 on the Beatport sales charts… And I can understand why – this track is smoking! We’re going back to purer electro now and this is a very pumping, old school sounding track… The poor Japanese-robot pronunciation of ‘cyborg’ is hilarious and the drum programming is absolutely tight… Nicey nice!

#08: Frederico Giust - The End Is Getting Closer (James Harcourt Remix) [126 BPM]
This Frederico Giust track remixed by James Harcourt was released as an mp3 EP on Adjust Recordings in 2005 – and now it’s available on plastic for the first time… This is another pretty damn groovy electro ripper that’s packed with all the usual ingredients… Banging basslines and old school synth experimentation tied up in a nice, subtle, groovy package… The reverbs and the vocals are pretty cool. All in all, this track isn’t bad at all… Especially the final rundown is frekkin’ sweet!

#09: D.Sens & Motion – In Motion ‘N’ Sickness [125 BPM]
Matthieu Delepeau is back – now joined by fellow Frenchman Motion (Vincent Courcot of Tetraktys fame). And what a track these guys have conjured up for us… Allegedly! Actually this track is somewhat of a disappointment. I mean it doesn’t turn out to be quite what it set out to be… It starts with phat reverbs soaked in a melodic crossover bonanza between rich electro and subtle progressive trance influences! Basically – very, very nice! But as the track progresses it looses both focus and energy and towards the end it’s but a shadow if it’s playful self. What kind of weird, inverted progression is that? What a shame…

#10: Silky Jack vs. Marcos Salo – Breakfast At Deca [130 BPM]
Silky Jack and Marcos Salo is actually the same person: Jurgen Van Geert… And Jurgen takes things a step further… We’re still in electro territory, but instead of the support of groovy progressive trance, we’re now drawing closer to the unmistakable sound of pure techno… So yeah, it’s another weird hybrid – not really what I expected, but at least it’s different from the rest… But I’m not sure how much I like it… And the vocals also bug me… Another so-so track I’m afraid…

I didn’t really know what to expect from this release – and I’m still not sure exactly what to think of this compilation… On the plus side there are a lot of great tracks here – and my indication of fav’e tracks below indicates at least a couple of very good tracks – and a handful of nice tracks too! Also the cover art + informative booklet are absolutely awesome… As usual with Tribal Vision! Hats off for all that!

On the downside, a lot of these tracks sound too damn similar… And I’m not sure how much playtime even the stand-out tracks are gonna get in my stereo. It might be because I’m an electro n00b who needs a revelation, but that doesn’t change the fact that this compilation would have benefited from even more variation… The ventures into trance, progressive trance, house and techno are cool – but I want more!

But I do not despair… These Prime Cuts are hopefully the first of many, and once Beef Records find their steady place in the electro scene I’m sure many bright moments are ahead… I hope so! Electro fans obviously need to check this out – and progressive trance fans with vertical taste will most definitely also find something to their liking here… Enjoy!

Beef Records is the new sister-label to Tribal Vision, dealing with the sounds of electro, breaks, minimal techno and house. Australian’s are no doubt familiar with the manager of the label, DJ Schwa- he has been spending time in Sydney has managed to build up quite a fan-base in all parts of the country. I was particularly impressed with his style, its always funky, experimental and his mixing is uber tight- he’s definitely got a bit part in why I started exploring the minimal techno genre, that’s for sure.

I first heard this cd a few months back, but its had a few changes since my first listen- Prime Cuts is a stellar release for its scene, featuring sounds by industry leaders like D-Nox, Trentemoller, Martinez, Loveboat (Jokke Ilsoe), D-Sens, Motion and Alex Kenji, to name a few. The CD is like Schwa’s DJ style -glitchy, deep, sexy, sleezy electro-techno with large doses of funk. Suffice to say Prime Cuts is one of my favourite CDs right now, hasn’t left my cd player in weeks. It absolutely rocks the dancefloor too- one of the few cds I find myself both loving at home and on the dancefloor.

The comp starts the on fire Jokke Ilsoe- and his new project with his girlfriend Renata, Love Boat. Pretty much sets the pace of the comp- sexy, broad grooves- bass-heavy, glitchy techno funk with plenty of quirk. Light hearted but at the same time- deep- definitely highlights Schwa’s eclectic (but awesome) taste. This one really broadens out by the end, big sweeping atmospheres over a building rhythm pattern- wicked.

The Oliverio and MOS remix of Petersky “Fuck Them All” pushes the boundaries a bit- the dirtiest sample I’ve heard in a while. Michael getting a bit cheeky with this one I think- definitely in keeping with the Beef Moniker. Retro synthie vocals over a sleezy lounge beat- lovely bit of sparkle thrown in at the end too. Slutty, definitely not for the “shanty” types, but I heard it on the dancefloor the other night and I haven’t seen a floor working like that in a while!

Trentemoller is definitely the man of the moment- his tunes are getting a flogging worldwide right now and I definitely have no trouble seeing why! He has a style completely of his own- from the first kick you can tell it’s a Trentemoller track! Never a fan of the vocals so much in the prog- but I find with this style techie stuff it works a treat. Walloping bass-groove when it kicks- like only the mollerman can. Definate highlight of a wicked cd!

Schwa really doesn’t let the pace slip up with the next one either- I think its probably my favourite on the whole disk. Martinez’s Apocalypse Now remix of D-Nox’s 7Hours is total class- tunes like this have totally converted me to a minimal-tek fiend. Dark, glitchy funk- lots of space and atmpshere and a groove that I’ve seen work everywhere from outdoors at the biggest festival to in a jammed club. Rocking stuff- bring it on!

Shuma have been a Tribal Vision artist for a while- but after hearing Rusty Robot, I can see their true home is on the Beef label. Moving more into electro-territory, Rusty Robot really does echo the name- it sounds like a wacky malfunctioning robot. This shit is the sound of now- and this is one of Shuma’s best releases to date. Imagine a dancefloor doing the Robot- and now you got a picture of this track.

D-Sens has always been one of my favourites- lately he’s definitely injected a healthy dose of electro into his new work. “Just can’t live without you” is pretty typical of his newer productions. Rocking guitars and distorted vocals over his trademark deep bass grooves. Tappy percussions and some funky effects toward the end- definitely fits nicely into the compilation. Definitely moving out of the minimal territory now- very much electrohouse- good transition between the 2 though.

Alex Kenji’s Cyborg brings back the glitch a bit- warped misprounounced “cyborg” sample carrys the track over a superphat bass-groove. If you get into the Shuma track, this one will definitely tickle your fancy as well I’d say. Federico Guist’s “The End is Getting Closer” keeps this groove up. Tek-house funk, lots more robotic dancing. Works a like a dream on the floor too, can attest to that!

D-Sens and Motion’s “In Motion’n’Sickness” is perhaps the “housiest” tune on the comp- little bit less glitch, more focus on a huge pulsing electrobassline. Positive, groovy and progressive in its approach- lovely way the track develops and changes. A bit different from the rest of the comp, but a good way to progress the cd.

Silky Jack Vs Marcos Salo closes up the comp with this droning electrohouse number. Not a bad track persay, but perhaps not my favourite on the compilation. Its kind of got a dischordant frequency I’m not so fond of, I think it overdoes the 303s a bit. But it does fit into the style of the comp and I’d probably put it down to taste more than anything.

Overall- Beef Records first effort with Prime Cuts is an absolute stormer of a comp, hits the new wave minimal techno style on the head. Great tracks and great progression- while it didn’t stick to a particular genre, it definitely had a “sound” and this is what is important too. Wild cover art- really love the whole “Beef” concept its so funny. Well done to Schwa on compiling one of my favourite comps of 2006- he’s hit the sound of the “now” on the head, best of luck with the future of Beef!

Beef records blast into the scene with a delicious fat-free fillet steak!!!!

what a wonderful debut release it is...
Love almost everything here,Schwasko has a great taste in modern electronica for sure.

Favorites are Jokke's new project (Love boat),Shuma's Rustyrobots and even though its an oldie the Trentemoller remix sure is a goodie.....

Presentation and cover are also top-notch,and sure justifiy the name of the label with a loveable collage of two cows making sweet love. Inside we find a chunky booklet with information galore, but that really is no surprise coming from a sub-label of Tribal vision.

As said above this really is the sound of "now" ,and i think this release will educate some trancey folks even further, to open their minds to more kinds of electronic music.

Some of the tracks sound ok and this is certainly a fresh release. Anyway, not all tracks sit comfortably with me here. Tracks 3,6,9,10 were totally not my taste. The rest is okayish, but I'm not really into this vibe I guess. Respect though for doing something different.           "Subconscious unravels at the point of death, and all time it has known erupts into a moment. As death extinguishes us, so we become it."
