Intro:
Noize Conspiracy's second release, comes in the form of a compilation featuring a lineup of all-Greek dark psychedelic producers. Being of Greek descent, I couldn't help myself but to review this one, my first review..
01. Bionicle - Snow Time [148 BPM]
We start off with a debut release from Bionicle - Marios Sounogiou & Stefanos Tsisikas. Very atmospheric, spooky cooky tune, bounces along quite nicely with a soft punch kick. Great use of panning pads which create a real outdoor 'alone in the forest' type vibe. I really enjoyed this track for an opener, constant morphing tweaked sounds coming in and out, lots to play with here..
02. Stranger - Arts From Mars [150 BPM]
Bang! So much for a nice slow mood build up for this CD... Stranger comes out throwing a phat mother fucker of a bassline straight up yer nose filled with tzatziki, and then some. Lots of vortex, LFO screeching sounds in the background to mess with your head. The rythm section is quite straight-forward throughout the track, but is forgiveable with the heavy bass/kick being the real drive behind this track. It ends funny with the track kicking back in with 8 seconds to go, and then kinda stops.. not sure what that's about but hey.. will be thrashing this one for sure!
03. Orestis - Perturbation [148 BPM]
"Why are you crying Mary?" "My family.." - Love this intro by Orestis, dripping wet with psychedelia, as is the whole track. With only one other solo release under his name, Orestis Pefanis shows off some talent here with this track. He works some great tricks throughout this tune, an LFO effect that makes the track sound as if its breathing, nice.. another where he fuses a different toned bassline into the current bassline, changing the mood constantly. This is one hell of a fucking psychedelic track, my only criticism is that I feel as if the kick is lacking a bit of punch here, however that could well just be a personal thing.. but definately one of my favourites on this comp, go Orestis, Opa!
04. Metallaxis - Chaotic [150 BPM]
Dark, driving, relentless, and heavy. This track kicks in at a cool 150 BPM, the intro reminds me of some sounds Kindzadza uses in a few of his old tracks. Lots of screeching, feels like your brain is getting sawed into 2 - great stuff! Again here, im not sure if it's just my ears, but some sounds come in a bit too loud and the compression on the bassline over compensates.. but hey, at this stage it's just a matter of trying to find where your braincells have ended up after the track has ended. Tasty.
05. Claw - Ellines Eimaste [148 BPM]
Man I can't get enough of Claw right now. This track has a very Penta feel to it - particularly with the rythm and kick section, and even the bassline. The track title translates to "we are greek", Claw represents in fine style. Many vocal samples, one of which I recall from a flash movie called The Little Ninja - a boy whispers, "you are a demon, and I think the only thing you will taste today, is your own blood!".. it works very well since the track is quite haunting, but is only a matter of time before it breaks into a mass fullon signature Claw style. Lots of squelchy sounds fused with delayed voice samples, all presented with top-notch production. Thumbs up!
06. Kulu and Matutero - Secrets [150 BPM]
Welcome to the land of fucked up music! This nightmare track contains a very high psychedelic element, like most of what is presented in this compilation, but unlike the other tracks its very different. Lots of acid like wish-wash, delayed panning leads. The track changes direction many times, I counted about 430 different basslines (well not quite that many), but is very reminiscent of the traditional psykovsky/osom sound, and being a big fan of the latter this goes down smoother than lamb on a spit. Good first collaborative release from these guys, keen to hear where their sound goes from here..
07. Polyphonia - Soundforms [150 BPM]
This seems to be the magic number BPM on this CD. Another crazy psychedelic monster from Polyphonia here, constantly evolving sounds mutate and re-mutate, the track bounces along with no breaks and buildups as such, well perhaps except for the excellent last minute, but you can really appreciate the amount of sounds and the work gone into these sounds here. This is seriously heavy shit.
08. Cymazz - Old Mr Grim [151 BPM]
Yiannis Revis, aka Cymazz, is another fairly newcomer on this CD - but this track gives me good faith. A very quirky psychedelic track that gets better and better as it goes on. More minimal and funky than the other tracks, but still quite psychedelic layered with panned light-noize/heavy lfo'd acid leads. Nice one man.
09. Horror Place - Psyche N Delos [152 BPM]
Okay, so Horror Place wins the BPM race. Notorious for throwing in every sound in his soundbank, I always find the Horror Place tracks packed up to the brim with sounds. This track is no exception, and a solid tune overall. My only wish is that he would lose that nervous bassline, just a personal thing, I find it hard to get into his tracks.. but otherwise nice and atmospherically psychedelic. Even though it's the fastest track, it's actually quite a mellow tune which is really saying something for this CD.
Favourites: 1, 2(!), 3(!!), 4, 5(!!), 6, 7(!), 8
Summary:
With this release, Noize Conspiracy delivers a faceful of meaty souvlaki styled night-time psychedelia (with no stingy amount of garlic sauce) cooked up fresh from Greece, to the world. What I love about this CD especially, is that all the tracks sound different in their own way, which is a good thing as DJs will find a track suitable for any time of the night.
An intense PSYCHEDELIC journey, which I hope to hear more from Noize Conspiracy. I feel that some of the tracks overall lacked some production, but I think with so many new artists, projects and side projects popping up this will improve over time. Mastering was done by Tim Schuldt, and as you'd expect is pretty spot on. The artwork is very sweet, with the Parthenon almost looking like its on fire.. So what else can I say? If you like it hard and psychedelic, go and buy it already!
8/10

line up is excellent
however on listening to it a few times I cant help but shake the feeling that most tracks on this VA are atleast a year old.

Very nice comp. I especially like the Claw track but the whole cd is full of twisted gems. Definetly stands out in the increasing # of dark comp's put out recently.
