It’s summer time and the listening is easy as everyone knows from the lyrics of a famous Gershwin opera to all ears familiar. Or at least it should be with this new summer collection of very progressive tunes released from the Iboga headquarters. Emok & Banel have sollicited Melbourne born and bred Kasey Taylor, the biggest Australian export and one of the most important Djs of the Progressive mundillo, to compile this new CD. Knighted by the biggest names among his peers, always at the cutting edge of musical production & influences, his already long (23 years!) career has included participation in the biggest festivals in every corner of the world, from his home Rainbow Serpent to the next Boom and Creamfields, as well as gigs at the Olympus of club life such as the Mansion, to the lewdest and hottest undeground venues such as the Stadium (Jakarta). As you might expect, this album is strongly infused with the music he’s been releasing since 97, both as a label manager and producer. The spectrum covered ranges from the original and latest developments of prog-house released by Vapour to the newly launched Evapour8, dedicated to techno/tech-house. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Kasey Taylor : Trapped (Flow & Zeo rmx)
Flow & Zeo are a much sought-after electro-minimal DJ couple based in Rio de Janeiro, with appearances at some of the biggest festivals in the world such as the Love Parade, Creamfields, Universo Parallelo, Voov, Trancendance etc. They are now heralds of Tropical Beats and D-Nox’s Sprout label. Their take on the fat, prog-house, Kasey Taylor all-time classic could be described as charting minimal tech-house territory, but it’s a very restrained exploration, as they deliver quite a stripped back version of the pumping original groover. It mainly consists in a percussive groovy lead conversing with hissing, filtered, hi-hat cymbal drive. The break conventionally interrupts things without building on tension or suspense. This is an OK piece for a CD opening though.

2. Solead – Giddy Down (Peter Gun rmx)
With three artist albums, and heaps of licences at the best labels under the belt, which have built a strong reputation for his trademark dark, tribal progressive-house sound, German producer Peter Juergens seems now to be taking more techy directions as he puts his own spin on French duo Solead’s “Giddy Down”, after Jamie Stevens’ version gave it a memorable, demented twist. The funky touch of the original gives way to a well-mannered electro-house fusion of styles, vaguely reminiscent of the creative vein of Elegant Universe, especially in the synth riffs. Hints of binary housey rhythms remain, striding along the aquatic, undulating trendy bassline. As in the original, vocal snippets are sprinkled over simple arpeggiated pads to give an atmospheric touch in the last sequences. Not a blasting rmx, yet a well produced dj tool, as you might expect from this experienced producer.

3. Kasey Taylor - Peaches (Luke Chable´s undead rmx)
Next is another remixed version of Kasey Taylor’s “Peaches” by his talented compatriot Luke Chable. This new rmx has plenty to offer : from the rolls of the snare that give a rather martial feel to the piece, to the rattles of the bassline which undergoes tone changes and dynamic variations. These are the key reasons why this new edit smartly complexifies the basics of clubby electro house and takes it a step further. Likewise, the additional technoish drippling synth which smoothly evolves toward a distinct melodic line will unmistakenly captivate the connoisseur and offer an original dance-floor friendly tool.

4. Peter Gun - Acapulco (Kasey Taylor rmx)
This rmx of Peter Juergens’ Acapulco, signed by Kasey Taylor himself, introduces a slimmer, chilled out version of his pumping prog-house style that established the reputation of our Aussie dj. Let’s call this minimal prog-house, as he reduces the exotic fluff of the seminal percussive melody to a minimal motif, and brings the electroish riffs to simple airy pads but keeps the housy rhythmic patterns. OK piece for the afternoon beach party.

5. Kasey Taylor - Coconuts (Nyquist rmx)
Nyquist is the exciting Aussie duo made of Aran Gallagher, better known under the guise of Freq, and his mate Ben Hartley. Their collaboration should come to fruition soon with an artist album due out at the end of this year at Iboga. In the past months, they’ve released some of the most irresistible, pumping tracks in the Prog-House register. Their alluring signature sound is again at work here, with sober, yet precise orchestration and an original hip-shaking bassline that commands the track. The break brings about an effective climax and staggering pitch shifting of the bass. Distant claps and percussions on top of discreet pads make up the additional background arrangements in the final sequences of this mostly rhythmic piece. Another asset from the Aussie masters.

6. Kasey Taylor - Trapped (Dousk rmx)
Most wanted Greek producer Dousk has recently confirmed his brilliant return to the fore of the progressive scene by releasing a couple of stunning tracks, such as the rmx of Logiztik Soundz signed at Flow Vinyl, and that of Ido Ophir and Miki Litvak’s Shnorkel, released at Evapour8, not to mention those waiting in the pipeline. He takes “Trapped” into downright techno territories, with another bad ass undulating bassline, and rollercoaster pads undergoing gradual pitch bends and transposes. The hammering of the snare is reminiscent of the binary pattern of the housy original until the last break seemingly cools things down a bit, while actually taking the track to an effective crowd-pleasing climax and flavouring the finale with more metallic sounds and acid twists. Another gnarly remix and precious DJ tool by the Greek maestro.

7. Avilo - Reach
Next is another reissue from UK producer Avilo, one of Vapour recordings’ most released producers. This prog-house classic track hinges on a simple obsessive housey riff that remains untouched through out the track, even after the break which simply interrupts the flow without bringing any suspense. The lack of complexity does not undermine the effectiveness of this track, provided your requirements ain’t too high.

8. Miki Litvak & Ido Ophir - Shnorkel (Dousk´s Exclusive Gems rmx)
This compilation would not have been complete without a version of this year’s bomb, “shnorkel” the hit track written by Miki Litvak & Ido Ophir, and previously released at KT’s new offshoot Evapour8. The Dousk rmx was brilliant, fusing tech/tech house, and progressive elements, arguably one of his best rmx ever. Unsurprisingly, the Greek genius has been a much in-demand remixer since. This edit is an abridged (-1,30 mn) version of the original which does not compromise its quality : both the infectious bassline and the devastating break with its scratch effect are present, among other yummies. One of this year’s best tracks.

9. Luke Chable – The shepherd
Melbourne-based producer and Global Undergound compilations’ favourite wonderboy Luke Chable returns for a second instalment. “The shepherd” offers a condensed version of Chable’s successful music recipes using airy, trancey, shimmering pads soaring on a rocking bassline, which smartly chug along the pitch scale. If you like your prog-house strongly tinged with trance, this one is for you.

10. Kasey Taylor & Chris Meehan-simplicity
“Simplicity” is one of Kasey Taylor’s classics, co-written with Chris Meeham. It’s a tribal groover with tense string riffs nicely contrasting with surging atmospheric pads, paving the way to the a final ellipitic melodic line : this is what made Kasey Taylor’s music famous, and it’s good to have it featured on this CD. As a conclusive piece it does a fine job, and if you’re getting your inspiration fom maestro Taylor, that is, if you sporadically drop an “old” classic into your set, this 2004 piece is one of a kind.

Bottom line:
This compilation gives a great insight into what Kasey Taylor is spinning in his dj set – and his repertoire is broad indeed, even if the techno side prevails these days. Those who missed the original digital releases will be delighted to find a careful selection of the cream of Vapour’s crop. If I were to select the cherries on the pie, I would pick the Dousks, the Chables and the Nyquist.

I love it but imo it´s not Prog Psy as dear friend Tula said above, it´s more into the Progressive House or even the new trend of Minimal-Tech House style.

Miki Litvak & Ido Ophir - Shnorkel (Dousk ´s Exclusive Gems Remix) is amazing as Dousk did in his other remix, but this time it´s even more tripping and hypnotic! hehe I vote for this as the track of the album!

Congratz IBOGA!
